Austria-Hungary
The northwestern Balkans came under Hapsburg rule early on. The Hapsburgs acquired the Slovene lands of Frankish Empire in the 10th century, when the empire was partitioned, added Styria, Carinthia and Carniola in the 13th century, and Istria and Trieste in the 14th century. The acquisition of Croatia in 1527 further expanded the Hapsburg frontiers to Bosnia, dividing the Balkans into a Catholic northwest and an Orthodox Christian and Muslim southeast. The Croatian territories, on the hand, had a nominal autonomy. The Croatian council of nobles, the ban, and its parliament, the Sabor, continued to function, having elected the Austrian Hapsburgs to the Croatian throne. But the Hapsburgs also clipped the Croatian territories, and the powers of the ban and Sabor, by establishing a Military Frontier (Militargrenze or Vojna Krajina) along the Ottoman border, which was directly administered by the Habsburg war council. The reason History has to keep repeating itself is that nobody ever listens. Anon. Stupidity is the basic building block of the universe. Frank Zappa In the week since my piece Deus ex B52 appeared in the LF City Times , I've received a great deal of feedback about it, mostly positive. Some, though, either accused me of making light of the very real human suffering in Kosovo or asked me straightforwardly enough, "OK, smart alec, what should we do?" My short answers to these correspondents are, respectively:
  • "I'm as sensitive as anyone else to human tragedy, but my daddy taught me not to cry in public. The utter ludicrousness, cynicism, and counterproductiveness of what the politicians are doing there, though, needs to be made obvious."
  • "You should do whatever you think best to relieve the suffering, whether support for private humanitarian aid, church-sponsored exhortation of the political leaders involved, or whatever. But military intervention in the Balkans by outside powers has only made matters worse for the last 600 years, and it sure doesn't seem to be helping now."
Deus is, as nearly everybody realized, essentially a political cartoon in verbal form. As such it makes use of oversimplification and stereotypes; I'll say no more about it here, since nothing ruins a good joke more than trying to explain it.

E-MAIL US VOTING BOOTH LOCATE YOUR RELATIVES Dr. Aleksander STIPCEVIC THE QUESTION OF ILLYRIAN-ALBANIAN CONTINUITY AND ITS POLITICAL TOPICALITY TODAY The question of the ethnic and cultural continuity between the early Illyrians and the mediaeval Albanians, besides being one of the most attractive issues of Balkan history, has also acquired a political dimension in recent decades. This is not the first time such a thing has happened in history. It was the Croats who before anyone else put forward the claim of being descended from the glorious Illyrian people, to the point of identifying themselves with them and giving themselves the name of Illyrians. For centuries, the Croatian language was simply called Illyrian. It is thought that Vinko Pribojevic (Vincentius Priboevius) in the 16 th century was the first to include the history of the Illyrians in what might be called a political program. Pribojevic idea; countering the ideology and threat of pan-Germanism, hi used the splendid history of the Illyrians in order to demonstrate a cultural and especially historical superiority to the GERMANS, Italians, and Hungarians. According to Pribojevic, both Queen Teuta and King Agron were Slavs, as were Alexander the Great, Diocletian, and even Aristotle and St. Jerom. (1) After him, Mauro Orbini, another Croat historian, relaunched the pan-Slavic idea in his well-known book, "Il Regno degli Slavi, hoggi corrottamente detti Schiavoni," published in Pesaro in 1601. The book met with great success and exerted a major influence on historians and politicians of subsequent centuries. Now nobody doubted that the Slavs, especially those of the western portion of the Balkan peninsula, were the direct descendants of the Illyrians. Illyrian was the tongue spoken on the east coast of the Adriatic, and the land inhabited by the southern Slavs, especially the Croats, was Illyria. The Croats adopted the name Illyrian for themselves, though more when abroad and in foreign-language publications than within Croatia itself. (2)

    Balkans, History On Geographic
The Balkan Peninsula has many physical features, but there are three main ones, they are the fact that it is a peninsula, its mountains, and its rivers. Within the Balkan Peninsula there are a good majority of ethnicities. There will be a majority of instances that the geography has helped or hindered certain peoples in the Balkans history.
The mountains had a few of different effects on the early people living in the Balkan Peninsula. The mountains of this area, helped certain ethnic groups, and hurt others. The mountain made certain divisions among the land and caused the region to be split up into small units where distinct ethnic groups have been able to sustain themselves. These small units are not much bigger than the British Isles or the state of Texas, and homes a little over a dozen of prominent ethnic groups. The mountains are also considered a physical obstacle, because they obstruct regional combination, whether it be political, economic, or cultural. And the last effect it had on these people is that of the land. The land near the bottom of these mountains is a lot better then that of the top of it, so the groups that have been beaten in battle usually would take refuge up at the top, or it would be a punishment.

Maps of Yugoslavia's pre-1991 and current boundaries Q: Who is fighting in Kosovo?
A: Q: Why did the U.S. and NATO attack?
A: Q: Why do the U.S. and NATO care about Kosovo?
    A:
The United States has long been concerned that violence in Yugoslavia would spill across borders, possibly leading to war between two NATO allies, Greece and Turkey. World War I had roots in Balkan violence; World War II was inflamed by ethnic slaughter there. In recent months, the United States and its European allies have said forcefully that they want Serbian atrocities against Kosovo's civilian population to stop. Q: How is the Kosovo conflict related to Bosnia? A: Bosnia was part of Yugoslavia until 1992 when it declared independence. But ethnic Serbs in Bosnia wanted to remain part of Yugoslavia. The Milosevic government in Belgrade encouraged the ethnic Serbs in Bosnia to fight Muslims and Croats. The war claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, many the result of "ethnic cleansing" carried out by ethnic Serbian paramilitary forces loyal to Milosevic. U.S. officials say they do not want what happened in Bosnia to occur again in Kosovo. Meanwhile, about 20,000 NATO troops are keeping the peace in Bosnia under the 1995 Dayton accords. Some fear those NATO troops could be dragged into the Kosovo conflict.

    History of Balkan conflict
Yugoslav Republics: Serbia and Montenegro remain joined in a truncated Yugoslav federation. Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegovina have each declared independence. Fighting: War erupted in June 1991 after Slovenia and Croatia declared independence. Slovenia's war ended in less than a month with under 70 dead. Croatia's war of secession against Serb rebels backed by the Yugoslav army lasted six months and killed an estimated 10,000 people. A tenuous cease-fire took hold in January 1992. In April 1992, Bosnian Serbs rebelled against Bosnia's independence and an estimated 200,000 people have died and millions lost their homes in their war against the Muslim-led government. People and religion: Serbs are Orthodox Christians; Croats are Roman Catholic; Bosnia's Muslims are Slavs who adopted their faith during centuries of Ottoman Turkish rule. History: Croatia was under Austro-Hungarian rule until Yugoslavia was formed in 1918. Its Serb minority - about 12% of the population - was introduced by the Habsburgs into border areas as good fighters against Ottoman incursions. Bosnia-Herzegovina was under Ottoman, then briefly under Austro-Hungarian rule before 1918. In 1991, its population was:
