Studio Philosophy
Technique Our ballet program is the mainstay of our studio. Developing strong classical technique is encouraged before or while exploring other dance forms. Our ballet technique is based on a mixture of the three main schools of ballet: Vaganova, Checetti, and The Royal Academy. We use exercises and theory from all three schools, adding in a modern understanding of kinetics. We are very conscientious in providing our students with sound technique that prevents injury and promotes many years of dance enjoyment.
Performances We pride ourselves in providing the community of Davis with top-notch dance productions with professional dancing, sets, lighting and costumes. We are passionate about presenting highly entertaining theatrical experiences for our audience and performers alike. We are dedicated to offering our dancers excellent performing experiences. Dancers get parts, which are best suited to their personality, technical and artistic ability and dedication level. Our dancers are invited to become part of the creative process, to contribute their ideas to the choreography, costumes and scenery. Our repertoire includes a large collection of short creative pieces inspired by many dance forms and classical ballets including The Sleeping Beauty Ballet, The Cinderella Ballet and the Firebird.

Nutcracker Performances

'Nutcracker' in postings

"For dancers there is rather little in it, for art absolutely nothing, and for the artistic fate of our ballet, one more step downward."
T his was the unpromising review that greeted the first performance of Nutcracker - which, fortunately for us, survived to become perhaps the most popular, and certainly the most often performed, ballet of all time. For about two months around every Christmas, literally hundreds of versions are staged, not just by professional companies but also by dance schools. It is the traditional introduction for small children, and has given many thousands their first glimpse of classical ballet. T he original story on which Nutcracker is based was by E.T.A. Hoffmann, but on the way to becoming a ballet much of the 'grimmness' was discarded, leaving a distinctly thin plot and characters it is difficult to care much about. The child Clara dreams that the nutcracker doll given to her by her godfather, Drosselmeyer, turns into a handsome prince - but she remains a child, and the 'ballerina' role belongs to the Sugar Plum Fairy, who gets the big pas de deux and the prince. The main problem in staging Nutcracker today is finding some way of presenting the story to give it cogency and meaning for an adult audience, and of adding some spice to the sugar.

97. The Ballet Book Home
Gives teachers and students supplemental materials to reinforce classroom work as students learn ballet.
http://www.theballetbook.com
The Ballet Book series of workbooks was created to give teachers and students supplemental materials to reinforce classroom work. Each ballet illustration has been designed to be technically correct in position and staging. Vocabulary phonetics are an approximation of American pronunciations of the French words. The Ballet Book Series has been created with goal of helping young dancers gain more knowledge and understanding of their art. Author Donna Jones Carver first conceived the idea of workbooks based on her own experience as a ballet teacher. Wanting to give her students a broader base in ballet, she created lesson plans that formed the basis for Workbooks III, IV, and V. With the help of co-author, Sally Weatherford, she created this series. Over ten years went into researching, compiling and writing the background material presented in these workbooks.
