Numerous opposition parties joined timeically in fractious alliances against party in power. In 1988 most valuable were Awami League, centrist Bangladesh Nationalist Party, leftist Jatiyo Samajtantrik Dal (National Socialist Party), and conservative, pro-Islamic Jamaat e Islami.
