From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The culture of Barbados is a blend of West African and British cultures present in Barbados . The Bajan , or Barbadian dialect is an iconic part of the culture. But English is still the official language, reflecting centuries of British rule.

The island's British influence stretches back to 1625, when Captain John Powell claimed it in the name of King James I . The first colonists arrived two years later, founding a settlement of 80 civilians and 10 slaves . Early on, Barbados adopted the British style of government, creating a Parliamentary democracy in 1639. During the colonial period, all members of the Legislative Assembly were white. After slavery was abolished in 1838, non-whites quickly began to play a role in the island's government, with the first minority member elected in 1843. Although Barbados gained full independence from Britain in 1966, it has retained its governmental style and remains a member of the Commonwealth of Nations In addition to government, the British passed down their love of

Barbados Saga (an Axses WorldSagas.com project) Barbados personalities are no exception to the rule, but Barbadians will surprise with their warmth, casual charm and sophistication. The island is a reflection of its people. Here the simple chattel house sits boldly in the splendor of wealthy estates. The beach vendor will happily discuss the meaning of life with anyone, from Pope to movie star. They usually have an inspired point of view.
Barbadians are different to other Caribbean Personalities in many ways. They are most spiritual and religiously conscious. They are by nature open, thoughtful and generous. They love a party but will have time for anyone, they like people, no matter what background, race, and disposition. They make time for quiet and shy people and draw them out with disarming innocence and charm. They will rise to the occasion on any occasion to shoot the breeze and laugh and joke with the most outrageous personalities of our time.

Crafts Art Galleries Artists Museums ... Music Island Culture Barbados' distinction of having remained under British rule from its first settlement in 1627 to its Independence on November 30, 1966, profoundly affected the culture. Because of this unbroken dominion, the stoic British influence courses through every day life and the infrastructure of the island. Yet the more flamboyant African sway pervades local life as well, and the blend of the two makes for an unmatched cultural disposition. This fusion ripples through all facets of daily living, from the foods and music to the house styles and street names. Even the language is affected, with Queen's English being the official 'language' while the colourful local dialect remains in common usage. More than 70 per cent of the island's 260 000 people are direct descendents from the forced mass Africa migration of the late 1600s and 1700s-the slave trade. The island also has a peaceful blend of European (primarily British) settler blood with the Afro descendents, as well as small but vibrant Hindu (India), Arab (Lebanese and Syrian) and Jewish communities. African influence is readily seen in the art, craft and literary works produced on the island, as well as many of the foods and figures of speech. Bajans are a quick-witted, fun-loving people and their gift for the double entendre or turn of phrase is most visible through

These paintings represent some of the artwork found on Barbados. Other artists focus on pen and ink drawings or watercolors instead of oil and a plethora of other "standard" media. But the most interesting art seems to come from what is historically known as "craft" work. Even though the slaves didn't have free time to develop art in the traditional form (on canvas, paper, carved out of wood, chiseled out of marble, etc.), they did still appreciate art and aesthetics. Their art more often took the form of something useable , rather than merely decorative. For instance, many slaves used calabash pots to carry and drink water. When they made the pots, they sometimes carved the outside shell so it would dry with a decorative pattern. Or they would fashion art out of clothing, shoes, quilts, etc. Artists today will make handbags out of calabash pots, crafting something practical while still developing an aesthetic appeal. The practical, everyday items become fascinating works of art. Another aspect of the artistic creation can be seen in masquerade costumes during Carnival time. Here, great effort is put into developing and creating elaborate pieces of art used and exhibited for a single day. The costume makers and the wearers never keep the designs or the costumes; instead, they discard the works of art on the side of the road. They throw them away and start on new, fresh designs for the next year.

English is the official language of Barbados. Religion
As a result of its long-standing association with England, Barbados is mainly Anglican. The Moravian and Methodist Churches were added to the list of denominations of t he 18th century. Since then these have been followed by Roman Catholics, Baptists, Pentecostals, Seventh Day Adventists, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, The Salvation Army and many other small religious groups. There are small groups of Hindus and Muslims, as well as a small Jewish community. These groups all have complete religious freedom. CULTURAL ORGANISATIONS An Act of Parliament, passed in March 1983, created the National Cultural Foundation (NCF). The Foundation is a Statutory Corporation which falls under the Prime Minister's Office. These groups all play their part in the promotion and development of creative arts in Barbados. FESTIVALS The Crop Over Festival
A folk festival which originated on the sugar plantations, "Crop Over" was then, as it is now, a means of celebrating the end of a hard-working sugar cane season. The three-week festival runs from mid-July to early August. It is a lively showcase of all facets of Barbadian culture, a fluid blend of African survivals and western modernity. Activities include plantation fairs, a donkey-cart parade, a King and Queen of the Crop competition, street malls and the "Pic-o-de-Crop" Calypso Monarch competition.

    Barbados Culture
    "The Unique Culture Of Barbados"
Barbados culture is very dynamic and unique from that of the culture of its neighboring Caribbean islands. This is due to the culture in Barbados steming from a merging of the British and West African culture of the this tiny island's history. The most notable of these influences, as a former colony of Britian, is our British history. The influence of Britain on the island is widespread and has lead to the island commonly being referred to as " Little England ". This influence can be seen in the island's governmental structure, traffic rules, sports and religious beliefs.
However once slavery was abolished and the country gained independence from England in 1966, the island's population became predominantly descendants of the West African slaves that worked the sugar plantations of former British land owners. The influence of these African slaves on the culture of Barbados can be heard in the Barbadian language, music, dance and arts.
Let's look at some aspects of the Barbados culture...
    The Government of Barbados
The English have had the greatest influence on the way this island is governed and therefore the structure of the Barbados government is comparable to that of Britain.

    Welcome to Barbados
    Barbados Culture Article
Important Information for Those Heading to Barbados
While traveling to Barbados can be a lot of fun, there are some things that you should know first, which will make your travel time much better. You will need to familiarize yourself with their currency, know about how much money you will need, and know how you plan to get from place to place while you are there, as well as how to stick to your travel budget. The money in Barbados is called the Bajan, and one Bajan is usually equal to about two US dollars. That may seem like a lot, but when you start looking at the average costs of things on the island, you may change your mind. For the most part, the prices of goods and services are fairly similar to those found in the United States. Typically, dinner in a decent restaurant, with wine, will cost about $100 American dollars, or $200 Bajan dollars. If you decide to shop for souvenirs to take back home, you can expect to pay about $40 Bajan for a T-shirt, and about $20 Bajan for the smaller items, such as cups, hats, etc. If you plan to shop while you are here, you will need to make certain you have enough money, travelers checks, or credit cards with you do to so. Once you arrive in Barbados, you will leave the airport for your hotel, so you can check in and store your belongings. You can choose to ride a shuttle from the airport to your hotel, or you can travel by taxi, or even rent a car. In general you can expect to pay a minimum of $40 Bajan for the taxi ride, while if you go by shuttle you will only have to pay for storing your belongings, usually about $10 Bajan. The average cost of a rental car in Barbados is about $100-$120 Bajan for each day you have the car. For some people, it can be difficult to drive these cars, as they are the opposite from what we are used to here in the United States, with the steering wheel being on the opposite side of the car, and people driving in the opposite lanes of traffic. This is one reason why so many people choose not to drive themselves while visiting the island, as you can expect; it could potentially lead to some hair-raising events.
