British and African cultures mix in Barbados to create a friendly, vibrant island atmosphere
Britain in the Caribbean While the Amerindians, Spanish, and Portuguese all made it to Barbados before the British, it was the English who firmly established themselves on the island. The introduction of West African slaves to the sugar plantations also had an indelible influence on the culture of Barbados.
British Influence
Captain John Powell claimed the island of Barbados for King James I in 1625. Two years later, Captain Henry Powell led an expedition of 80 settlers and 10 slaves to colonize the island. Although Barbados gained full independence from England in 1966, the island remains within the British Commonwealth. With nearly 400 years of association with England, it's no wonder that the Queen's English is the official language of Barbados. The British exerted an early cultural influence on the settlement in Barbados by establishing the world's third parliamentary democracy in 1639. While the Legislative Assembly went through tough periods caused by the burning of the assembly building and pressure from London, the colony maintained its legislative powers on the island. Traditional architecture on the island also exhibits an unmistakable British influence. Many of the older establishments and houses are built in Georgian, Victorian, or Jacobean styles.

CULTURE The British influence from its first settlement in 1627 has greatly affected the Barbados' culture. However, the more flamboyant African presence is strong as well.
African influence is readily seen in the art, craft and literary works produced on the island, as well as the range of food and figures of speech. The blend of these two cultures is evident in the island's daily live, from the food to the music to the infrastructure of the island.

    Bajan Culture
A former British Colony and a member of the Commonwealth, Barbados is an island with a dual heritage. England is evident in the architecture found in Bridgetown, the many Anglican churches, and the horse racing on a Saturday, but the lifestyle of the people is truly West Indian. This is demonstrated daily in its music, dance and cuisine.
    The People
Barbados is made special by its people. Bajans mostly of African decent are some of the friendliest West Indians, whether at a roadside food stall selling the local delicacy 'Flying Fish' or in a rum shop for a game of dominoes, the Bajans will give you the warmest welcome. The locals are always ready to fill you in on the latest island news or simply give you their view on how to put the world to rights. You will soon switch in to their sense of humor, one certainty they will keep you laughing for hours.
    Sports
The Bajans love their cricket; the locals will drop everything to listen to the commentary of a West Indies Test Match. North of Bridgetown is the new Kensington Oval, the main international test cricket stadium which was rebuilt to host the Super 8's and the Final of the Cricket World Cup held in 2007. Watching a match with the locals is definitely a rousing experience.

Barbados culture is one of the most unique in the Caribbean islands.
This island of beautiful sandy beaches and azure, tranquil waters is home to approximately 250,000 people. The native Barbados people are believed to be Arawak Indians. This island was one over several Caribbean islands that were a British colonies, and Between the 17th and 20th centuries, slave traders moved slaves from Africa to Barbados. They were brought to this Caribbean island to work primarily on the tobacco, sugar cane, and cotton plantations. The British left a hard imprint upon the Barbados culture, and, at a glimpse, Barbados seems a lot like England. In fact, even though they still drink rum instead of ale, Barbados' neighboring islands often refer to it a "Little England." This is quite surprising considering the fact the area host less than five percent of Barbados people are actually European/British today. Other than the fact that they are both islands, the British sway can be seen on Barbados in several ways. Some of the influences of the British on this Caribbean island culture include things such as driving style and form of government. For example, the traffic in Barbados is right hand drive, meaning the traffic moves on the left side of the road.
