The History of Baseball W hile the exact origins of baseball are unknown, most historians agree that it is based on the English game of rounders . A game which began to become quite popular in this country in the early 19th century, and many sources report the growing popularity of a game called "townball", "base", or "baseball".
Abner Doubleday Alexander Cartwright D.L. Adams
Throughout the early part of the 19th century, small towns formed teams, and baseball clubs were formed in larger cities. In 1845, Alexander Cartwright wanted to formalize a list of rules by which all teams could play. Much of that original code is still in place today. Although popular legend says that the game was invented by Abner Doubleday, baseball's true father was Cartwright.
Rules of the Game
The first recorded baseball contest took place a year later, in 1846. Cartwright and his Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York City lost to the New York Baseball Club in a game at the Elysian Fields, in Hoboken, New Jersey. These amateur games became more frequent and more popular. In 1857, a convention of amateur teams was called to discuss rules and other issues. Twenty five teams from the northeast sent delegates. The following year, they formed the National Association of Base Ball Players, the first organized baseball league. In its first year of operation, the league supported itself by occasionally charging fans for admission. The future looked very bright.

Baseball History
Baseball has been in the heart of American culture for more than 200 years. Based on the English game of "rounders", rural folks in the early 1800s began to pass the time away with a game they called "town ball". The popular folk game was similar to earlier versions called by many names: "round ball", "goal ball", "stool ball" and "fletch-catch". Similar to "cricket", it involved a bat, a ball, and running around a course of bases. Over a half a century later, baseball had grown to become widely known as "America's national pastime." It didn't take long before the baseball bug caught on, spawning small teams and clubs throughout the eastern United States. By mid-19th century, baseball's inventor, Alexander Cartwright and others made sure the game had rules, many of which are still in play today.

COLLEGE SPORTS SAFE SEARCH The History of Baseball All about the Ball Game The sport of baseball evokes more nostalgia among the American people than any other sport. So many people played the game as children (or play its close relative, softball) that it has become known as "the national pastime." It is also a very democratic game. Unlike football and basketball, baseball can be played well by people of average height and weight. Baseball probably originated before the American Civil War (1861-1865) as rounders, a simple game played on sandlots. Early champions of the game fine-tuned it to include the kind of skills and mental judgment that made cricket respectable in England. In particular, scoring and record-keeping gave baseball gravity. "Today," notes John Thorn in The Baseball Encyclopedia, "baseball without records is inconceivable." More Americans undoubtedly know that Roger Maris's sixty-one home runs in 1961 broke Babe Ruth's record of sixty in 1927 than that President Ronald Reagan's 525 electoral-college votes in 1984 broke President Franklin Roosevelt's record of 523 in 1936. " A PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL HISTORY "
By John H. Duffy On a muddy abandoned industrial lot in south Wilmington in late October 1992, a small hastily gathered contingent of investors, politicians, contractors and the press gathered to break ground for a $6 Million ballpark. It was the culmination of a five year effort that had endured many setbacks and much opposition. It was the beginning of a breakneck construction project that in less than six months would see the fabulously successful return of professional baseball to Wilmington for the first time in 41 years. All of those present knew that the new team would take up the name of that last team, the Blue Rocks of the old Interstate League which had given up the ghost in 1952. Few however would know that when the home opener scheduled for April of 1993 finally came to pass, 110 years had passed since that spring of 1883 when Wilmington had first known professional baseball. The Wilmington fans cheered that following spring of 1993 as Whiz Kid hall of famer Robin Roberts threw out the first pitch to inaugurate the return of the Blue Rocks before a sell-out crowd. Many knew or had been reminded that Roberts had begun his professional career right here in Wilmington with "the Old Blue Rocks".

The game relied on contact-hitters, bunting, and base stealing for its offense. Forty years of batting records began to fall, and the popularity of the game began to explode.

The History of Baseball - Alexander Cartwright The Maine Baseball Club 1898 Americans began playing baseball on informal teams, using local rules, in the early 1800s. By the 1860s, the sport, unrivaled in popularity, was being described as America's "national pastime." Alexander Joy Cartwright (1820-1892) of New York invented the modern baseball field in 1845. Alexander Cartwright and the members of his New York Knickerbocker Base Ball Club, devised the first rules and regulations for the modern game of baseball. Baseball was based on the English game of rounders. Rounders become popular in the United States in the early 19th century, where the game was called "townball", "base", or "baseball". Gene had published his newsletter, Notes from the Shadows of Cooperstown , here at the Baseball Archive since 1998. It started in the early 90s as a printed newsletter that he mailed out to fellow baseball fans, and over the years he developed quite a following. His research on the Black Sox scandal was first documented in the pages of Notes, and it eventually coalesced into the classic book Update: The Utica Observer-Dispatch ran a nice story about Carney on July 7th.

Remember ... and help History of the Subway Series Since the inception of the modern-day World Series in 1903, the Fall Classic has been played within the borders of New York City a total of 14 times. These intraurban competitions to determine baseball’s best have become known as “Subway Series.” Sadly, with the departure of the Giants and Dodgers to California in 1958, there was no Subway Series for 44 years That is, until 1999. For the first time ever, both the Mets and Yankees made it to post-season play in the same season. Baseball’s relatively new three-tier playoff system makes it a bit more difficult for teams to make it to the World Series, and while the Yankees advanced to the capture their 25th championship, the Mets fell in the NLCS to the pennant-winning Atlanta Braves. Then came 2000, and both the Mets and Yankees advanced through the first two playoff rounds to reach the World Series. The teams were considered evenly matched, but the Yankees came out on top, winning their 26th championship. So at the start of the 21st Century, New York fans ride the underground rails once again as the Big Apple retains its position as the baseball capital of the world. In addition to the New York Subway Series, there have been three other times when the entire World Series has been within a single urban area.

    Baseball History
Today, a multi-billion dollar industry, baseball has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a folk game in the nineteen century… The interest in the game of baseball has not captured the imagination of the people across the globe like professional basketball and American football. The reasons for the same can be attributed to decline in participation at amateur level and protracted labor problems. Despite the uncertainty of ‘America’s National Pastime’, baseball will always occupy an important place in American culture.
The debate and controversy on the origin of baseball or rather history of baseball has been going on for a century now. However, the general consensus is that baseball has been derived from a European folk game known as ‘Town Ball’.
The earliest known newspaper account, which provides first written proof of baseball history was about a game in the United States and was published on September 11, 1845, in the New York Morning News, which announced a game that occurred the previous day. The first recorded Baseball game was played on October 6, 1845 at Elysian Fields, in Hoboken, New Jersey by fourteen members of the New York Knickerbockers Club. Alexander Cartwright captained knickerbockers team. Duncan Curry, the club president captained the other team. Curry's team won 11–8 in three innings.
A New York Club ‘Knickerbockers’ published the first book containing the baseball rules in 1845. The author, Alexander Joy Cartwright is known as the ‘the father of baseball’. In June 3, 1953, the Congress officially credited him with inventing the game. Cartwright wrote twenty rules in the book, which are now known as the ’20 Original Rules of Baseball’.
