Hounds in the Majors

The Greyhounds/Dodgers were always a public owned and operated team,
that is it was managed and run by citizens and organizations as a non-profit
sponsors were the American Legion Milton-Talley Post 20, The Junior Chamber
a struggle and the citizen leadership that kept the team going for 20 years could be an inspiration for young people today.  During one of the frequent "public meetings" and "support your local team"drives the following poem was written by Lou Wrather, manager o and local sportscaster, and published in for 500 season tickets. It's goodbye to baseball-goodbye to the team Goodbye to the Greyhounds, and umpires so mean. No longer will cheers ring up thru the night As the Hounds take the field to carry on the fight. Turner Field will be dark, the park empty and sad, As we remember guys like Hutson, Petschow, and Ladd. There's Leonard the batboy, his face full of pride

Miscellaneous
The Seals and the Oaks had quite a rivalry through the years. They would play Sunday doubleheaders, with one game in the morning at Seals Stadium (shown here in a mid 1950's photo), then the afternoon game played across the bay in Emeryville at the Oaks' home park. Both parks of course are long gone now; a Safeway shopping center (Potrero Center) now stands at the site of the old Seals Stadium. Funny how I'm now married to a woman who shops at that Safeway! :)
1949 Seals logo (from
1949 SF Seals yearbook) In April, 1994, I attended a SF Giants-Oakland A's exhibition game where they wore the uniforms of the Seals and Oaks, reviving this old rivalry. As I sat there in 3Com Park watching the pre-game warmups, I remembered the stories my granddad had told me about the Seals. I also remembered my dad's best friend, Ed Greenhood who was a part-time batboy for the 1927 Oaks. His granddad helped organize the very first Bay Area semi-professional baseball team, the Greenhoods and the Morans in the 1880's. As I sat there that April day, I wished all three of them were there with me watching these new players bring back memories of the Seals and the Oaks.

Throughout the years, baseball has remained so consistently strong, so rich in tradition, and so true to its colors. Sure, the uniforms may be a little snappier and the players may earn a few more bucks. But when you come right down to it, baseball in 1901 was essentially the same as it is today. It's still three outs per inning, nine innings per game. Take ball four and you walk to first base, hit it over the fence and you trot all the way around. Even the teams are the same. The Pirates still play in Pittsburgh and the Cubbies still suit up in Chicago. And though Walter O'Malley may have moved his troops from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, we still call them the Dodgers. This uniformity, this consistency is one of baseball's greatest traits. Throughout the years, the game has stood tall and proud, holding strong through the toughest of times.
