    Baseball's 25 Greatest Moments
Sporting News, The Oct 18, 1999 by Dave Kindred
BASEBALL has moments. Football has drives, basketball has runs, hockey has ... I dunno what hockey has. But I know this: Baseball has moments. Moments of suspense. Followed by moments when everything changes. It's almost as if the rules were designed to create these moments. Baseball's drama builds incrementally. Because nothing can happen until the pitcher throws the ballLord knows he'd often rather not throw it at allwe have time to imagine the possibilities inherent with every pitch. Basketball is jazz. Football is bombs blowin' up. Baseball is silenceuntil lightning strikes and all hell breaks loose, setting our brains on fire. (Scientists say vivid memories are the result of adrenaline rushes that juice up the brain's ability to absorb events. That, or your brain's on fire.) So baseball is the best at giving us the suspense that leads to a moment The moment may be a pitcher's, a hitter's, a fielder's, a runner's, even an umpire's. Whatever it is, we anticipate it. We may frame the circumstance out loud: "Be in trouble if he throws a strike here." Or we may wait in butterfly-stomach silence, knowing from experience the dread and happy things that can happen next.

Moose Clabaugh
In 1926, Moose Clabaugh hit 62 home runs for the Tyler Trojans of the Class D East Texas League. This feat broke the record set the previous year when Tony Lazzeri hit 60 at Salt Lake City. Tony had the advantage of 200 games that year; roughly half of them at an altitude of 4,400 feet. Moose hit hid 62 in 121 games; averaging more than one homer every to games.
This earned Clabaugh a callup to Brooklyn, where he went 1 for 14. It was his only big league experience.
I stumbled across Clabaugh's story while reading the 1995 edition of Baseball Research Journal last year. Wanting to know more about the man, I queried some SABR members about him. As it turns out, there is an essay about him in an upcoming book. Ninety Feet from Fame : Close Calls with Baseball Immortality will be released this spring. According to the books description, Journalist and baseball historian Mike Robbins tells the gripping stories of dozens of players who came this (hold fingers only slightly apart) close to baseball immortality.
Robbins was kind enough to allow me to excerpt his section on Moose Clabaugh here. Enjoy.

Baseball History
Baseball is believed to have evolved from a combination of different games of yore and English influences are not denied. Initially baseball was played in America in the early 1800s with rules changing with the locality where it was being played. Alexander Joy Cartwright is credited with devising some of the first standard rules and regulations of the game as we know it today. The history of baseball as most people know it dates back to the first recorded baseball game which was played in 1845 in New Jersey. By 1900, the game was almost the same as today. Baseball was initially popular in the Northeast but eventually broadened its reach. The first professional baseball team was the Cincinnati Red Stockings formed in 1869 and was unbeaten through its first season. The 1870s saw the formation of various competing leagues including the now famous National league. The Depression supported the popularity of night baseball. The period from 1920 to the Second World War can be termed the Golden Years of baseball and were the heydays of legends such as Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson and Joe DiMaggio. During the war, many stars enlisted and went on to serve in the armed forces.
Find the latest baseball sports picks The 1950s were an unsettling time for the sport and many major upheavals occurred during this period. The 1960s and 1970s were much the same, though for different reasons. Youth disillusionment with established institutions, increasing popularity of football, and rule changes, all contributed to the turmoil. Conflict between team owners and the players was also an issue that needed to be resolved.
