The extremely small RAM memory size of the Atari 2600, 128 bytes, severely restricted the possibilities of this cartridge. The BASIC Programming display is divided into six regions:
  • "Program" - where instructions are written (maximum of nine lines of code). "Stack" - shows temporary results of what your program does. "Variables" - displays the values of any variables your program is using. "Output" - displays any output values your program is creating. "Status" - displays the amount of available memory remaining "Graphics" - contains two colored squares that can be manipulated by your program.

History Prior to the mid- , computers were terribly expensive tools that were used only for special-purpose task, running a single "job" at a time. During the 1960s, however, computers started to drop in price to the point where even small companies could afford them, and the speed increased to the point where they often sat idle because there weren't enough jobs for them. Programming languages of the era tended to be designed, like the machines they ran on, for specific purposes such a scientific formula processing. Since single-job machines were expensive, they also tended to consider execution speed to be the most important feature of all. In general they were hard to use, and tended to be somewhat "ugly".

edit Introduction
Functions and Subroutines are lines of code that you use more than once. The purpose of functions and subroutines is to save time and space by just calling a function/subroutine. There is hardly a difference between the two, except that a function returns a value, where a subroutine just repeats lines of code (A function is not always used more than once).
An example of a function, say you are making a program that calculates sales tax. The function would ask for a subtotal, take that number and multiply it by 1.07 (If sales tax is 7%, the 1 is because you are adding onto the subtotal to make a total, not finding the sales tax it self). The function would take the new total and give it back to the program.
A subroutine would be code that is reused, like a shop in a game. Every time the user goes to the shop, the program will go back to the Shops Subroutine, and if the user bought an item, it would call a "Buy Item" function.
edit Parameters
Parameters are used in functions and subroutines. They pass data to be used with the function/parameter. For use with our two examples:

BASIC (an acronym for "Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code") is the name of a family of related high-level programming languages, developed circa 1963 at Dartmouth College, to provide an accessible and easy-to-learn environment for non-science students to understand and use computers. In the early 1980's, the Basic programming language was built-in to the majority of personal computers sold.
Chipmunk Basic
Chipmunk Basic for Mac OS
Chipmunk Basic for Mac OS is an old-fashioned Basic interpreter which runs on almost all Apple Macintosh computers. Chipmunk Basic uses a vintage traditional-style command-line console (but note that line numbers are not required to run Basic program written using an external text editor). Supported features on Mac OS X include color graphics, sprites, sound (including Quicktime MIDI sounds and morse code), speech synthesis, matrix ops, AppleScript, network sockets, pipes, serial I/O, and even some rudimentary OOP (object oriented programming) capabilities. Versions are available for System 6.0.7 thru Mac OS X 10.6, for systems from very old Mac 512Ke's, up thru the latest

Visual Basic Programming Career Overview
Visual Basic is a Microsoft-developed programming system that was designed to make writing Windows software applications easier, and is the most widely used programming system ever created. While early versions of Visual Basic were somewhat simple in design, the latest version, known as Visual Basic.NET is easily as complex as computer languages such as C++ and Java. Regardless, Visual Basic has often been praised because computer applications can be written more quickly and cheaply using this language than any other. Visual Basic Programmers use this computer language system to write software applications. They may work in a variety of different places, in addition to companies that are specifically involved in the development of new software. For example, a Visual Basic Programmer may work in a company that requires new software applications for business accounting or payroll management.

For .Net articles, tips, and forums Are you a technical writer preparing long, complex documents in information sciences, hardware design, or software documentation? This is the first book ever written that specifically deals with the many problems and errors that can crop up when you are writing the long, complex documents typical of these technical fields. The book starts by showing you how to set Word's options to avoid unwanted formatting changes and time-wasting document corruption. Then it takes you through those areas of Word that are most diffucult to use and most likely to cause problems, including tables, automatic numbering, headers/footers, document sections, tables of contents, positioning graphics, styles, and templates. It ends with a chapter of dos and don'ts and advice on best practices for document backup and security. Click here for more details and online ordering
