Basic Programming
Name: Basic Programming Company: Atari Model #: CX-2620 Programmer: Warren Robinett Year: Released? Yes Notes: One of the few games to use the keypad controllers A BASIC language compiler for the 2600?!?! Well not exactly... While it's true the Basic Programming allows the user to program the 2600 in a very crude way, it uses it's own strange language to do so. Basic Programming is more of toy than a serious programming tool. Due to the limits of the 2600 you can only input 9 lines of code (11 if you use a trick), which as most programmers know isn't enough to do anything useful. The user enters commands using the keypad controllers, which hook together to form an awkward little keyboard.
Basic Programming was a novel attempt by Atari to show people that the 2600 wasn't all about games, but ultimately a failed one. Anybody who bought this cartridge thinking they would turn their 2600 into a computer was sadly mistaken. Basic Programming is so underpowered it takes all the available memory to create a simple Pong style game! Basic Programming also uses a strange set of commands and symbols which doesn't correspond to the normal BASIC that most people know. Couple this with the fact that your program is actually broken up between several regions (Program, Stack, Variables, Output, Status, and Graphics), and even simple programming becomes a nightmare.

It was a "find". A real, ASR-33 teletype. These units were used originally by people like Western Union to transmit telegrams. Later they became a standard computer accessory for cheap input and output. You can see them in old movies and photographs. For a budding computer hobbyist, it was the thing to have after you got your first computer. It had a keyboard, a printer that served for all output, and even a means of input and storage, a paper tape reader and punch. The hobby computer revolution started with the MITS 8800, 6-7 years before the IBM-PC came to being. That fact usually brings yawns until you note that this was where Microsoft got their start, beginning with a couple of college drop outs and ending. in amazingly short time all things considered, with an empire that could purchase outright several small countries. If you got one, for the steep price of about $1000, and then put it together, not a small feat, what you got was a big blue box with lights on the front. If you did your homework correctly, those lights did the right things, and after carefully reading the manual, and inputting several byte instructions, painstakingly flipping each bit of the byte, 8 bits, then hitting enter for each byte, you could actually get the machine to do something sensible with the lights on the front. The beast was commanded to count on the lights. In binary of course. Next, a lit bit was walked across each of the front panel lights in turn, marquee style. Finally, the game "shoot the duck" was entered, which rotated a light across the row of lights. The object was to hit the switch under it at just the right time, and turn the light off. Miss and you just created another light. Get all the lights out, and, well, you ran out of interesting things to do rapidly.

Three Formants Analysis
In order to view the changes of more than 2 formants over time, the formants of all frames can be plotted in a 2-D graph. The results are shown in following figures for two different speakers.
Formants of “five” spoken by a male speaker
Formants of “five” spoken by a female speaker
The circles on each graph show the location of the voiced region for /ai/ in digit “five”. Even that two speech signals are from different speakers of different gender, a few common properties can be seen from the graphs. Firstly, the voiced regions have respectively high amplitude compare to unvoiced region. The normalized amplitudes are shown with the intensity of the star marker (*). The darker markers indicate higher amplitudes. Secondly, there is a trend for the changes of diphthong in the voiced region, and the formants can be classified into certain ranges.

    SQL 2008.. Compress them backups
Posted on No Comments For those SQL admins who have managed their SQL backups using SQL dumps have had to wrestle with file sizes for many years. There are better ways of backing your databases up using things like SQL connectors to a backup software like CommVault or other backup programs but many times you just need a SQL Dump file. Depending on the size of the data in the Database they can be quite large. The good news is that there is lot of empty space in those files and they compress very well. But the bad news to go with that is if they are larger files you will find yourself having issues with programs like WinZIP.

The touch screen PC based system collects information via sensors on a folding machine in a major printing comapny. Data such as Good Copy, Bad Copy, Setting / Good Production is collated by the system and transformed into statistical data which is used to monitor the efficiency of the machine and operators. The system also integrates into the businesses management software allowing the ordering of raw materials and the scheduling of jobs to be automated.

55. Chute.bas
BASIC program for designing a hemispherical parachute.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~pdj/chute.htm
Chute.bas
Chute.bas is a simple basic program that allows you to calculate the dimentions of a bear's parachute.
It asks for the weight wou want to drop, the descending rate, the no. of gores (panels) and the distance between calculated points.
If you got the printer switched on it then prints out the coordinates of a half panel.
Shroud lines should be about 1.5 times the panel height. Don't forget to make a 2.5 cm hole in the center of the canopy: You'll need it for the static line!
If you want to build a chute for a parabear be sure to use smooth fabric. Most ripstops are to "hard" and will not open properly. Sometimes it helps to put the fabric through a washing cycle at the highest temperature.Try that with some scrap (colors can bleed: careful if you don't like pink underwear): if it helps then put the chute in before you attach the shroud lines.
You can download Chute.bas in two formats: as a .bas file (you'll need qbasic for that) or as a stand alone .exe file. Both files are zipped.
chute2.bas (zipped) (1.3 K)

This is a guide to help those who are familiar with electronics and writing PIC microcontroller software to program and use them at home.
http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/~db283101/pichowto.html
The Basics of Programming and Using a PIC Microcontroller Authored By: Doug Bowlus [db283101@ohio.edu] The purpose of this guide is to help those who are familiar with electronics and writing PIC microcontroller software to program and use PIC microcontrollers at home. The first part of this guide will help select a PIC programmer by comparing the current options versus cost and functionality. The second part of this guide will demonstrate the use of one of the programmers mentioned in part I The third and final part will explain the setup and use of various supporting hardware necessary to use the PIC microcontroller. Part I: Selecting a Programmer What programmer you will buy depends largely on how much you want to spend and how much technical support you will need. The table below shows the various options I looked at before making my decision. Name Manufacturer Where to buy Comments Price (USD) Picstart Plus Microchip Digi-key Expensive, serial, supports a large range of PICs, should have good technical support MPLAB ICD2 Microchip Digi-key Expensive, usb, works with MPLAB to help debug programs (will require two pins), should have good support. Price includes $40

!Family for RISC OS
!Family is a BASIC program to maintain a family tree database on an Acorn RISC OS platform (has been in frequent use on RO 3.1 and 3.5 - current versions are being developed on RISC OS 4 but will be tested on 3.1). It uses the worldwide standard GEDCOM file format to store its information, and can therefore exchange data with most genealogical packages in use today. The user interface is graphical through an on-screen family-tree in which members of a family can be seen in the context of their relationships. This makes it far easier to navigate than many genealogical packages whose interface is purely textual, or which show only a tiny part of a tree structure at one time. The tree display can be sent to a printer, or a !Draw file, and a variety of reports can be generated. A complete website can also be created with a page for each person in the tree, showing two generations of ancestors, their marriage(s) and children and all relevant dates and notes. !Family was developed over several years (up to version 2.18) by Denis Howe at Imperial College. Pennine Software added features for local needs and intended sending these to Denis for incorporation into the released version. Following Denis's desire to pass support of the program on to someone else, these updates are now being made available by Pennine Software and can be retrieved from the
