B-BALL HISTORY History in Chronological Order The Game of Basketball was invented in December of 1891 by a Canadian Physician James Naismith who first organized the game when he was an instructer at the YMCA now known as Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. The game was such a hit with Dr Luther H Gulick who was Naismith's Supervisor that he requested for the game to be recreated for winter indoor play. At first the game was said to involve elements of American Football, Soccer and Hockey but these were just a means to describing the new game to outsiders. The first ball actually used was a soccer ball. The Teams had 9 players and the goals were simply peach baskets attached to two walls at opposite ends of the gymnasium. -In the U.S. a certain number of colleges started playing the game.

      • The NBA store in New York may be going away, but did you notice the same thing I did in the Associated Press story about why? "The NBA store on New York's Fifth Avenue will close at the end of February, and the league is searching for a new location. ... NBA executive vice president of global merchandising Sal LaRocca said Tuesday that Kushner Cos. was seeking an increase comparable to the one obtained when the Japanese clothing company Uniqlo signed a lease for other space in the building said to be worth $300 million over 15 years." That number. $300 million. $300 million ? Renting some retail space on Fifth Avenue, for a decade-and-a-half, costs more than Michael Jordan paid to buy the freaking Bobcats ? Not to mention, by my math, just to pay the rent you'd have to sell more than $50,000 worth of gear every day for 15 years. Could that be a typo? A league source says it's not. Learn About The History Of Basketball
The History of Basketball spans over 115 years. From the early beginnings of the game, when peach baskets served as the hoops, to the modern action-packed game - basketball has evolved and grown more than any other sport!
Invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, basketball started out as a simple game with only 13 original rules. However, I'd be willing to bet that Dr. Naismith would hardly recognize the game as it's played today. There have been numerous changes and modifications to the game over the years: rules, style of play, equipment, court markings, and many others. I have included a basketball time line below to help further illustrate these changes.
History of Basketball: The Beginning
The original game of basketball was started with 18 men in a YMCA gymnasium in Springfield, Mass. Since then it has grown into a game that is played by more than 300 million people worldwide. Dr. James Naismith invented basketball - under the orders from Dr. Luther Gulick, head of Physical Education at the School for Christian Workers. Naismith had 14 days to create an indoor game that would provide an "athletic distraction" for a rowdy class through the harsh New England winter. Naismith's invention didn't come easily. His first intention was to bring outdoor games (such as soccer and lacrosse) indoors. These games proved to be too physical and cumbersome for indoor play.

Pete Newell: The Biggest Contributor in Basketball History
By Steven Resnick (Senior Writer) on March 23, 2009 reads comments likes Pete Newell died in November of 2008 and it was one of the biggest losses in basketball history. He was 93. Newell is renowned for his time as a top college coach, team executive for three different NBA clubs, General Manager of the Los Angeles Lakers, and of course, the camp he's so identified with: the Pete Newell Big Man's Camp. Here's a look at what Newell has done throughout his time as college coach and in the NBA: Newell started off in the college ranks, getting his first head coaching post at the University of San Francisco. There, he compiled a record of 70-37 in his four years. He led the Dons to the 1949 NIT championship. From 1950-1954, he was the head coach of Michigan State, managing a 45-42 mark. In his last six years of coaching, he led the University of California Berkeley Golden Bears, compiling a sterling record of 119-44, before retiring in 1960. During his time as Golden Bear head coach, the 1959 team won the NCAA Championship. First, they stopped Oscar Robertson and Cincinnati, 64-58.

Basketball history
In early December 1891, Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physician from McGill University and minister on the faculty of a college for YMCA professionals (today, Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA, sought a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied and at proper levels of fitness during the long New England winters. After rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorly suited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach basket onto an 10-foot (3.05 m) elevated track. In contrast with modern basketball nets, this peach basket retained its bottom, so balls scored into the basket had to be poked out with a long dowel each time. A soccer ball was used to shoot goals. His handwritten diaries of the time indicate that he was nervous about this invention, which incorporated rules from a Canadian children's game called 'Duck on a Rock', as many had failed before it.
Naismith's new game is quite similar to the game of team handball, which had already been invented in the early 1890s.
The first official basketball game was played in the YMCA gymnasium on January 20, 1892 with nine players, on a court just half the size of a present-day National Basketball Association (NBA) court. 'Basket ball', the name suggested by one of Naismith's students, was popular from the beginning.

Basketball History
It began with two peach baskets attached to a 10-foot-high railing and a soccer ball. The earliest seeds of one of today's most popular sports, basketball, dates back to one Canadian schoolboy's days outside a one-room school house in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Known widely as basketball's inventor, but also a physician, physical education instructor and clergyman, Dr. James Naismith occupied his spare time at school playing a game called "duck-on-a-rock" . The game and its rules were simple. Players tossed a rock at a makeshift "duck" to try and knock it off a larger rock.
