Living willow from Windrush Willow, Exeter, UK
Suzanne and Richard Kerwood have been growing and weaving living willow in the UK since 1997 - a big contrast from their previous occupations (a bank officer and flying instructor respectively). Based on the outskirts of Exeter, Windrush grows 105 varieties of living willow , planting and harvesting by hand, drying and weaving gives us a real sense of pride in our work and our efforts to achieve an environmentally balanced lifestyle.
With our sale of cuttings and living willow we calculate that we have been responsible for the planting either directly or indirectly of over 250,000 willow trees to date. Each one extracting and locking up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. At Windrush Willow we use no herbicides or pesticides, our only inputs are sunlight and water.

All About Baskets Basketry Types and Uses
Basketry has been practiced for thousands of years by Native peoples of North America It is an art form which often combines both utilitarian and aesthetic qualities. Baskets are made for a variety of purposes, including food gathering and storage, furnishings, garments and ceremonial uses. Basketry can transmit important artistic knowledge and cultural traditions. There are many different types of baskets, with countless variations on these types made by different tribes and individual artists. Some basket types that can be seen in museums are no longer a part of the daily lives of Native peoples.

    BASKETRY.
The basketry of the Mission Indians is well known, and that of the Cahuilla has been described in detail. Considering its importance in the life of the people, it is remarkable for the small number of weaves, forms, and materials to which it is confined. The ordinary materials are not more than three: a grass, Epicampes rigens , for the warp; and for the woof either a reed-grass, Juncus robustus (or lesenerii ), or sumac, Rhus trilobata . The fibre of the palm, Neowashingtonia filamentosa , is also sometimes employed today, but its former use is doubtful. There appears to have been only one dye in common use, a black which is produced either from the elder or from a species of Sueda . Yellow, red, brown, and even greenish shades are ordinarily all obtained by using different portions of the stem of the Juncus, which between its root and top passes through several quite different colors. All the ordinary forms of basketry p. 42

"I was born in the north woods of northern Michigan, raised in lumber camps, where my father worked and our family stayed all winter, so I got very little education except nature. When my mother put me off her lap, so she could work at her baskets, she gave me some scrap material to play with that's how I learned to make baskets. I make only authentic Indian baskets, as my ancestors made. I work in my kitchen, after the splints are off the log, using only a sharp knife and a pair of scissors. I use black ash only. This is more of a hobby for me, I do not make a lot of baskets, perhaps 15 a year, and I only make them on order, which I never catch up with." Edith Bonde, 1975 letter to Smithsonian Institution
