Basketry
Basketry is the art of weaving together naturally occurring materials into a bowl or similar style vessel. There are several different types of basketry, including coiled, plaiting, and twining; and each have there own unique characteristics. It is a skill that is rooted in early human civilization and is still practiced by artists and craftsman all over the world. The earliest examples of basketry can be dated to well over 10,000 years ago; far outdating the earliest known examples of pottery. However, it is hard to establish exactly how old the practice is because baskets are always made from natural materials that eventually decay and disappear. There are some that speculate that basket making has existed as long as humans themselves. Traditional basketry is almost always done with natural fibers. Rattan, which is a reed, is a particularly common basket making material, as it is easy to find and is quite sturdy. As a general rule, baskets have always been made from materials that are easily found near the location of the basket weaver. Basketry Basketry Supplies Learning Center Site Map ... Home

Basketry B asketry is one of the oldest aboriginal crafts and prehistoric technologies in North America. Basketry is still a popular craft today. It includes weaving, knotting and entwining things to make baskets, matting, bags and even prehistoric footwear. Throughout the history of archeological findings, no two populations have designed styles of basketry that are identical. Overall, basketry artifacts hold an important role in regional chronologies and interregional relationships. The art of basketry uses many resources to create the products. The most common materials are plant parts. These include: grasses, leaves, stems, stalks, twigs, bark, roots and corn shuck. These elements are either used by themselves or as combinations. The most commonly used base structure is cordage. Cordage is usually two or more elements combined. Cordage is usually bark, corn shuck, stems or grasses. Two of these elements are tightly braided or twisted together. They are then used on the different types of construction methods. Coiling is a form of constructing a bag or basket. When this is done one essential element is coiled around and then the different orbits are stitched together to create adhesion with the second essential element. A spiral configuration is formed when the product is finished. Bark, woody shoots and grass stems are the most common in this construction.

Master artists of Japanese bamboo basketry, biographies and photos of woven bamboo basketry. Additionally, an extensive, well-illustrated section on plaiting techniques employed.
http://www.textilearts.com/bamboo/
TAI Gallery / Textile Arts represents over 30 Japanese bamboo artists. Most of these artists belong to one of two professional associations although a few are independent. The Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) emphasizes art and sculptural beauty. The Nihon Kogeikai (Japan Craft Arts Association) emphasizes beauty in functional form and technical excellency. The Kogeikai works with the Agency for Cultural Affairs in the selection of craft artists to be named as Living National Treasures of Japan. Some established artists choose to not be associated with a professional association. Young artists who have not yet joined an association are also included in this group.
More information on the professional associations and many of the artists represented by TAI Gallery / Textile Arts can be found in Robert T. Coffland's book, Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Arts, available from Paragon Books and Amazon.com.
Exhibition catalogs of many of the artists shown here are now available for online viewing on our Publications page ; a link to the artist's catalog also can be found on the respective artists' pages.

Cherokee Double Wall Pattern
The pattern uses #2 round reed. The completed basket will be about 3" tall and 4" to 5" round. The Cherokee double wall basket is a wicker plaited basket. It was created by the Oklahoma (Western) Cherokees when they were removed from North Carolina to Oklahoma. This writer believes the wicker basket has strong resemblance to the Appalacian sewing basket. The traditional basket of Oklahoma is woven of honeysuckle or buckbrush. Many weave the basket in round reed for a contemporary basket. Contact Peggy at pbweave@yahoo.com
