Hawaiian Lauhala from Kihalani Tropicals
The Hala Tree ( or Pandanus) has been an important part of Polynesian culture as well as Polynesian craft for centuries. Lauhala (leaves of the Hala) have been used by the Hawaiian people since ancient times in many ways; roofing materials, floor coverings, bedding mats, clothing, sails for boats and for baskets of many kinds. The fruits and portions of the roots are edible. The seed pods are used as paint brushes. The wood is used in carving. The pollen of the flower from the male is rumored to be an aphrodisiac
Lauhala bracelet
Lauhala mat
There are many varieties of Pandanus known world-wide. The most commonly used variety has thorns on the edges, which must be trimmed prior to use in weaving. The characteristics of the leaves (called lauhala depend on the variety and where they are grown, must be considered in selection for a specific task.

I have had to go back to work out of the shop Full time.
This does not leave a lot of time to work on the orders, I work 4-10 hour days and work in the shop the other 3 days, and try to take care of the farm during the same days.
I also am having problems with getting the logs to make handles
the price of logs is so low that loggers are setting on their jobs waiting for the price to go back up.
I am still trying to keep everyone happy on their orders, and getting them out, but it is a slow process since all handles are made when ordered I have very few handles in stock.

THE GOLDEN BASKET
Glenaan Elliott Robbins The Artist
Glenaan Elliott Robbins' personal history is indelibly tied to Nantucket. Her father, Mr. Coffin, is a descendant of the original Coffin family who came to Nantucket in 1659. A designer all of her life, Glenaan studied art, fashion and photography. After college she enrolled in the New York School of Interior Design, and worked with a major New York fabric firm.
To see more, click photo
After completing courses in Jewelry Design, Diamond Grading, Colored Stone Grading, and Pearl Grading at the Gemological Institute of America, Glenaan returned to Nantucket with business savvy, jewelry design experience and a novel idea - a miniature Nantucket Lightship Basket made of gold. Her original design, a gold basket with a scrimshaw top, opens to reveal an optional custom quarterboard where the owner's initials are scrimshawed. The gold baskets contain a tiny penny inside, dated 1977, the year Glenaan designed the first miniature gold Nantucket Lightship Basket. Glenaan's design has been imitated and copied, but Nantucket Islanders will tell you that hers is the original and authentic Gold Miniature Nantucket Lightship Basket. Glenaan opened her first store
