Beadwork
Reflections #145
By Patsy West
The amount of beads worn by Seminole women was a phenomenon to all who saw them. Imagine the amount of stamina it took to conduct daily tasks, which were a lot more vigorous than sitting in front of a TV, while wearing 12 pounds or so of beads! Following the Third Seminole War, as trade again resumed in the small trading posts on the rivers such as the Caloosahatchee, the Miami and New River, beads were one of the first things that the Seminole women purchased, after groceries. Recently, I discussed Aklophi (O-ce-lo-pee) and the prized string of beads that she recalled buying as a young girl when she visited Miami with her family just after the war in the 1860’s. She wore them the rest of her long life. The necklace beads were glass, and about the size of a pea. Light blue, dark blue, and red appear to have been the most favorite colors. The beads were made in Italy and the country once known as Czechoslovakia where they were shipped to bead distributors in the northeastern United States. New York City continues to have a “bead District” which some ladies from the Reservation visited last year!

Pictures and descriptions of Northeast Indian beadwork.
    http://www.umaine.edu/hudsonmuseum/virtual1.htm
Purses Moccasins Novelties Regalia ... Resources Brilliantly Beaded celebrates the rich beadworking traditions of Native peoples of the Northeast through the objects they created for their own use and to sell to others. Early European explorers describe indigenous clothing, which was made from hides and furs and decorated with painted motifs, porcupine quill, moosehair embroidery and shell beads. Among the trade items Europeans brought with them to North America were glass seed beads, needles, thread, ribbons and cloth. These materials rapidly replaced earlier decorative traditions that relied on the use of bone awls, sinew and painted designs. Native Peoples incorporated not only these new materials, but also new design motifs and decorative treatments from European sources and from other Native Peoples. Brilliantly Beaded explores the evolution of Northeastern beadwork from the seventeenth century to the present-day. Exhibits Home

Today's bead artists draw from ancient techniques, as well as new technologies, to create awe-inspiring objects whose impact magnifies as each bead is chosen, one at a time, to dance in light and shadow. Welcome to Abacus Beadwork
Abacus Beadwork, based in Durban, South Africa, was originally founded in 1985 by Jane Bedford. Jane's vision was to empower local women through the art of beadwork. Over 20 years later, this vision is continued under the leadership of Mike and Hazel Bartlett, who purchased Abacus Beadwork from Jane in July 2008. Although rich in natural beauty and heritage, KwaZulu-Natal on the east coast of South Africa, is plagued with unemployment and poverty. Abacus Beadwork's workforce consists solely of rural women from the surrounds of Durban, South Africa, giving them a platform for their beadwork skills, as well as the means to support themselves and their families. The beaders at Abacus Beadwork take traditional Zulu beadwork to new levels by combining traditional skill with contemporary designs, to create jewellery and objects that delight the senses with their richness and colour.
