Brown Bears (Grizzlies) of the North by Murray Lundberg Whether you use the terms "beautiful", "magnificent", "awesome", "deadly" or some other adjective to describe brown bears, these animals are one of the most universally respected Northern residents. The scientific name for the brown bear is Ursus arctos . In North America, there is a lot of confusion about the differences between brown bears, grizzlies and Kodiak bears. They are all Ursus arctos , but there are 2 recognized subspecies, Grizzly bear ( Ursus arctos horribilis Kodiak brown bear ( Ursus arctos middendorfi In general the coastal bears are brown bears, the interior bears are grizzlies and the Kodiaks live only on Kodiak Island. Coloration varies greatly, from black to the famous blondes of Denali Park. Around the world, the illegal hunting of bears ("poaching") is big business. Various parts of the bear such as the gall bladder and paws are extremely valuable on the Asian black market. An international agreement known as CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) has placed most populations of brown bears on a list known as Appendix II. Commercial trade in plants and animals listed on Appendix II (about 3,700 animal and 21,000 plant species), is permitted as long as it is sustainable and the specimens are obtained legally. It was difficult pulling Howard away from the line of fans, but he did take a few minutes to answer a few questions. JASON HOWARD (JH): Yeah, we weren’t really expecting that. Everyone seems to like it. It got good reaction online. We’ve been selling a lot of them here. It sold out in stores, but Image gave us a stack here. It went into second printing. I wrote and drew the SEA BEAR story and Ryan Ottley did the GRIZZLY SHARK one. BUG: So how did you come up with the concept? It seems like one of those stories that just leaps from the title of the story alone. JH: We were up late…it was actually at a convention and we were hanging out late, drawing some sketches for people. And we were trying to get them done by the next day and it was getting late and we were just throwing out goofy ideas and I don’t know exactly how it happened, but before we were done we had this idea of a bear and a shark that got mixed up. And if you were camping in the woods and you hear a sound at night and it’s a shark, not only would you be scared, but you’d be terrified because what the hell is a shark doing here in the woods?!?!

Our main lodge at Moose Lake is in the heart of prime BC moose country. Guided Black Bear Hunts: Hunt dates are May 20-26 and May 27-June 2 and June3-9, when the bears are fresh from hibernation and hides are excellent. This area has a very high population of LARGE color phase black bears, because of excellent habitat and the fact that it is not over hunted. We mainly hunt them only two weeks in the Spring season when they are fresh out of hibernation and concentrated on feeding areas where they are relatively easy to find and stalk. The hides are excellent at that time, much better than coastal bears because of our colder temperatures. Success rates are very high during this time, averaging 170% for many years, because many hunters will shoot two bears. The hides range in size from 6 feet to 8 feet squared.
