The polar bear Ursus maritimus ) is a bear native largely within the Arctic circle encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and surrounding land masses. It is the world's largest land carnivore and also the largest bear, together with the omnivorous Kodiak bear , which is approximately the same size. An adult male weighs around 350–680 kg (770–1,500 lb), while an adult female is about half that size. Although it is closely related to the brown bear , it has evolved to occupy a narrow ecological niche , with many body characteristics adapted for cold temperatures, for moving across snow, ice, and open water, and for hunting the seals which make up most of its diet.

The largest living carnivores on earth, Polar Bears are found in regions of the Arctic. They are commonly seen on the territory that belongs to Canada, Russia, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. The species has been seen as far south as Greenland and Iceland. In winter, the Polar Bear prefers southern areas. Coastlines are favorite sites of bearing females. In summer months, the species is often observed in areas with land-fast ice. The scientific name of the species is Ursus maritimus . It stems from the notion that this is a marine species that spends a lot of time in water. In fact, these animals do perfectly well on the pack ice of the Arctic Ocean. This is where the Polar Bear usually hunts and gives birth to the cubs. Picture source:

Polar Bears - Description
The Polar Bear is large weighing about 330-1,760 pounds with the female body being generally smaller than the male. The length of the body is approximately 6.6 to 10 feet. In fact, the Polar Bear is similar to the Brown Bear with respect to the body build. The species is large and stocky with a comparatively small head and an elongated neck. Although the fur is generally white, it may appear yellowish or even brown at times, which happens due to oxidation.

    Polar Bears
Ursus Maritimus Polar bears live year round near arctic waters hunting seal and other animals, rarely coming on land except on islands and rocky points. In winter they hunt along the Arctic shelfs looking for tasty seals, fish, and even humans! Their white coats provide camouflage in the ice and snow which make them almost invisible as they stalk their prey. In winter, when they are far from land they search for breathing holes made by seals. When the seal comes up for air, the polar bear will kill it and flip it out of the water with a single blow of its great clawed paw! Polar bears are very dangerous, and grow to a huge size and weigh as much as small automobile (1000 pounds). They have longer legs than other bears and large furry feet. These big feet help to distribute their weight as they walk on thin ice in the arctic waters. Polar bears are strong swimmers and can stay submerged for two minutes at a time. Their fur is made of hollow hairs which trap air and help to insulate them in the frigid waters. In November polar bears retire to dens dug out of the snow or permafrost. The females remain until the spring when they emerge with one or two cubs who stay with them for the next year and a half. The males spend a shorter time in the dens and may be seen out and about at any time of the year.

We now know that polar bears are not a single large homogeneous population that roams throughout the Arctic. Instead groups of polar bears referred to as stocks or populations, are distributed throughout the Arctic. Research begun in the late 1960s and continuing today also provides a thorough backdrop of information on population demographics, systematically analyzed data on population boundaries, population movements, population size, reproductive and survival parameters, and other useful information about biological, physiological, and ecological aspects of polar bears. We also realize that polar bears do not occur in large numbers; their ability to replace individuals in the population is very limited and population growth is extremely slow; they are long-lived creatures, which helps to offset the low reproductive potential; their populations fluctuate in response to natural factors such as climate and prey availability; and, populations can also be impacted by humans through factors such as hunting, oil spills, shipping, and other activities. We also realize that the level of human presence and activity in the Arctic continues to build. As a result the potential for humans to impact polar bears has never been greater than today.
