Geographic Range
Polar bears have a circumpolar distribution. They range throughout the arctic region surrounding the North Pole. The limits of their range are determined by the ice pack of the Arctic Ocean and the landfast ice of surrounding coastal areas. Bears have been reported as far south as the southern tips of Greenland and Iceland. During the winter, polar bears will range along the southern edge of the ice pack or northern edge of ice formed off the coasts of the continents. Pregnant females will overwinter on the coastlines where denning habitat is available for bearing young. During the summer, bears will remain at the edge of the receding ice pack or on islands and coastal regions that retain landfast ice. Six different populations are recognized as: Wrangel Island and western Alaska, northern Alaska, the Canadian Arctic archipelago, Greenland, Svalbard-Franz Josef Land, and Central Siberia. DeMaster and Stirling, 1981

zSB(3,3) Polar bears need increased government protection because their icy habitat is melting as a result of global warming, according to the Bush administration. Environmentalists hailed the move for the sake of the polar bears, but also expressed cautious optimism about what appeared to be a new willingness by the Bush administration to acknowledge the growing effects of global warming and to take action to address them. Related articles Remarkably well adapted to its Arctic environment, this polar roamer faces an uncertain future. Almost orange in the setting sun, the polar bear rooted among the kelp. Behind him stretched the mottled ice and water of Hudson Bay. Seaweed hanging from his jaws, the bear looked up, turning his nose sideways to test the freezing wind. Weighing nearly 1000 pounds, his head scarred from many fights with other males, he had been munching no more than kelp and grass since spring. Now, like the rest of the bears along this coast, he was waiting for the bay to freeze so he could once again resume his wanderings after seal. During this short November day, I had photographed many of them - subadult males wrestling and playing together; a female with triplets, carefully leading her cubs out of the path of any male bear; other females nursing their cubs in the lee of an ice block; and half a dozen single bears, snoozing, grazing on the coastal grasses, and testing the ice to see if it was ready for their fall migration. Polar Bear Scientists Announce Concerns The IUCN/SSC Polar Bear Specialist Group held its 14th meeting June 20-24, 2005, in Seattle, Washington. The scientists recommended that the polar bear be reclassified as a Vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List. They stated that the greatest challenge to polar bears may be large scale ecological change resulting from climatic warming.
