Sloth Bear (Species) Sloth Bears are found in the Indian subcontinent with a sub-species in Sri Lanka
    General Information:
Sloth bears are smaller than Himalayan Black bears. The body is covered with long black hair with slightly less hair on the belly and under the legs. A whitish or cream colored 'V' or 'U' shaped mark adorns the chest. The elongated nose & muzzle are specially designed to "hoover up" termites and ants. Sloth Bears can close their nostrils completely at their own will. The body is slender and the limbs are designed to climb trees trees as well as to dig the ground for termites. The sickle shaped claws have an unmistakable resemblance to the claws of the “Sloth” which gave the “Sloth bear” its name. Like other bears they are able to walk on the entire foot like humans. The ears are visible and the tail is short and hidden in the long hair. Sloth bear adults can weigh anywhere from 120-310 pounds and measure anywhere from 60-75 inches in length. The males are larger than the females. The life span is believed to be about 30 years

    I. Scientific Classification. A. Order - Carnivora.
The scientific order Carnivora includes bears, dogs, cats, raccoons, otters, weasels, and their relatives. All typical carnivores have well developed claws and a pair of specialized cheek teeth for cutting hard foods. B. Family - Ursidae.
All bears belong to this family. The family is divided into three subfamilies, Ursinae (black bears, brown bears, polar bears, sloth bears, and sun bears), Tremarctinae (spectacled bears), and Ailuropodinae (giant pandas). C. Genus, species - Ursus maritimus. 1. There are five other species in the genus Ursus: brown bears, American black bears, Asiatic black bears, sun bears, and sloth bears. Species can be distinguished by size, build, coloration, and habitat. Ursus maritimus is Latin for "sea bear". D. Fossil record.
The oldest known polar bear fossil is less than 100,000 years old. Polar bears probably developed during the Pleistocene era from an ancestral brown bear. Polar bears and brown bears are still closely related; when cross-bred, they produce fertile offspring.

The eight species include the Andean bear, North American Black bear, Polar bear, Brown bear, Asiatic bear, Giant Panda, Sun bear, and Sloth bear. Lifespan: The lifespan of a bear depends on the species and location of the animal. In general, animals kept in captivity live longer than wild animals. For the most part, though the exact ranges vary from species to species, bears live to be about 20-30 years old. Bear vary in size and weight depending upon which species they are. The largest species of bear is the Polar bear with an average weight of 900-1,500 pounds and are about 8-10 ft in length. The smallest bear species is the Sun bear. The SUn bear weighs about 60-110 lbs and is only about 4 ft in length. Habitat: Bears can be found on the continents of Europe, Asia, South America, and North America and living in varying habitats. The Sun bear, for example, lives in a tropical climate, while the Polar bear lives in sub zero temperatures.

These documents have been OCR-scanned . These are available for educational use only Sloth Bears Toward the end of the eighteenth century the first pelts of the Sloth bear arrived in Europe. The name "bear Sloth" was quickly reversed to "Sloth bear " The typical Sloth bear has a long, shaggy, unkempt, blackcoat, and a prominent white or yellow chevron or y marking on its chest. The hair is longer and shaggier than other bears, particularly on the back of the neck and between the shoulders. The belly and underleg hair is sparse, possibly to help keep the animal cool on hot days. The bear has no front teeth, and the bony palate is hollowed out.The feet have white, blunt, curved claws up to three inches (7.6 cm)long. Sloth bears grow about six feet (1.8m) long, and stand three feet (91 cm) high at the shoulder. They have a 6-7 inch long tail Big males can weigh up to 300 pounds. Females are generally smaller. Somewhere between 7,000 and 10,000 Sloth bears are estimated to still exist in the world. They are found in the forested areas on the island of Sri Lanka and the Indian subcontinent, northward to the base of the Himalayas, and eastward to Assan. They are also known to occur in Nepal's Chitwan National Park. They were also common in India two decades ago, but today Sloth bears appear to be rapidly disappearing over most of their range.
