Bears - Spectacled, Polar or Any Other
1 year ago Hi there people,
I was wondering if anyone out there has heard of the Spectacled Bear? It lives in South America and seems to be one of the cutest creatures I've seen - does anyone know if they are endangered , what they do for fun or anything?
Also, what do you think of other bears - Polar bears for example - Are they dangerous, aggresive and not worth protecting or should we be worried that there may not be any Polar Bears left in 30 years time?

Tremarctos ornatus
Description: The Andean, or spectacled, bear is a small black bear with cream-colored facial markings around its eyes that give it its name. Females weigh about 150 pounds and males may reach 250 pounds. They have a total body length of 60 to 72 inches.
Range: The spectacled bear is found in Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
Habitat: It lives in a variety of forested Andes mountain habitats, ranging in elevation from 500 to 14,000 feet. The Andean bear is an excellent tree climber and forages in the trees. It is most often found in what is called the cloud forest, a lush, misty ecosystem of the Andes. The spectacled bear is thought to play a vital role in the forest by scattering seeds through its droppings, a function called seed dispersal.
Diet: The favorite food of the Andean bear is fruit and it will also eat varieties of bromeliads, rodents and insects. When feeding in fruit trees the spectacled bear will bend back many branches forming a "nest" that will serve as a feeding platform and a daytime refuge. When a Andean bear strays into human farmland it is often shot on sight because it is considered a pest species for both the farmer's crops and livestock.
Social Organization: Little is known about the behavior of this shy forest bear. It is believed that they are mostly nocturnal and spend the day time sleeping in self-made tree nests, large tree root cavities or on ground beds. At sites of abundant food, as with fruiting trees, several bears can be seen feeding in close proximity with very little interaction between them. Only mothers with young have been seen traveling together so it is assumed spectacled bears lead solitary lives.

Spectacled Bear
Tremarctos ornatus
photo by Phillip Coffey Physical Appearance: The South American spectacled bear has excellent eyesight and gets its name from the markings around their eyes. These markings are unique to each individual and can be used for identification. Geographic Range: Spectacled bears are found in the Andes Mountains of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru. Status: Vulnerable Threats to Survival: There are an estimated 2000 to 2400 remaining in the wild. The bears are endangered because of habitat loss. They are also hunted for their fur and meat. Even though it is illegal to hunt the bears, it is very difficult to enforce. Habitat: Historically found from dry coastal deserts, to rainforests, to treeless alpine areas above 4000 meters. Habits: Primarily vegetarian, the spectacled bear feeds on fruit and leaves. Captive Breeding: Gerald Durrell first brought a male spectacled bear, Pedro, to the Jersey Zoo in 1963. A female on loan from the Brookfield Zoo, Chicago, USA was successfully mated with Pedro and the first two litters were born in 1972 and 1974. 5 spectacled bears are currently in the Jersey collection. Spectacled bear Latin Names: Tremarctos Ornatus
Subfamily: Tremarctinae.
Tremarctos Ornatus F.G. Cuvier, 1825. OTHER NAMES:
Short-faced bear, Andean Bear, Ucumari CHARACTERISTICS:
The spectacled bear is small and dark, ranging in color from black to brown, and a few have a reddish tinge. It has distinctive circular or semicircular creamy white markings (spectacles) on the face around the eyes, reminiscent of spectacles. Lines and patches of white usually extend onto the throat and chest as well. The amount and pattern of the white markings can be quite variable. Spectacled bears get their name from the light colored rings around their eyes that make some of the bears look like they are wearing glasses. These shy bears are the only species that live in South America. Little is known about these rare bears because of a lack of research and the remoteness of the areas where they live. Because they live in warm climates, their fur is thinner than that of North American bear species. Spectacled bears have long claws that allow them to climb trees very well. They also have large, flat molars so they can chew very tough plants that are found in the rainforest such as palms, cacti, and orchid bulbs. SIZE:
There are few measurements available for this bear. Adult spectacled bears can weigh between 140 and 385 pounds (63-173 kg). However, the body length of adults is about 150 to 180 centimeters (60 to 72 inches) and males may be 30 to 40 percent larger than females. Males weigh 100 to 155 kilograms (220 t o 340 pounds) and females weigh 64 to 82 kilograms (140 to 180 pounds). At birth, cubs weigh from 300 to 360 grams (10 to 11 1/2 ounces). When standing on all fours, the average male measures about 30 inches (76 cm) tall at the shoulder and approximately 7.5 feet (228 cm) from nose to tail. Females are slightly smaller. At birth, cubs weigh from 10 to 11 ounces Longevity 25+ years. The spectacled bear is the 2nd largest mammal and the largest carnivore in South America

15. The Spectacled Bear
What their name means, how they evolved, and its conservation status.
http://www.grizzlybear.org/bearbook/spectacled_bear.htm
The Spectacled Bear
The last of the lineage of short-faced bears, the spectacled bear evolved as the sole bear species isolated in South America after the end of the last ice age. Spectacled bears are medium-sized by bear standards, but they are the second-largest land mammals in South America. Only the tapir is larger. Its name refers to the light-colored markings surrounding the eyes. One of its common names in Spanish means bear with eyeglasses; another means the bromeliad eating bear.
The evolutionary paths that this intriguing bear has followed to reach this niche are paralleled in complexity and variety by the actual trails across landscapes that its ancestors trod to reach their last stronghold in the Andes Mountains. From early Tremarctine (short-faced) bears in eastern Asia about 15 million years ago, this trail led across the Bering Land Bridge to what is now Alaska. These were the first bears to make this journey, and we must assume that conditions at that time were not greatly different than during the most recent ice ages of the Pleistocene (see the chapter on brown bears).
