Spectacled bears are black or brown in colour and some even have a slight reddish tinge. The thing that gives them their name is the creamy white mark around their eyes. It makes them look like they are wearing glasses (like me but not). I think they are intelligent and wise.
Size
They are about 150 to 180 centimetres long. The males may be 30 percent longer than females are. The female spectacled bear weighs 64 to 82 kilograms but the male weighs 100 to 154 kilograms.
Cubs
Most cubs at birth weigh 300 to 350 grams and are born in litters of one, two or occasionally three cubs between November and February.
Habitat
Spectacled bears are found in South America. They live in rain forests, cloud forests, dry forests, steppe and coastal scrub desert, in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. They are very adaptable, but because their habitat is being destroyed and because some people keep them as pets, they now mostly live in thick forest.
Diet
Spectacled bears eat lots of things. They are omnivores. They like fruit best.

27. Spectacled Bear
Unlike other bears, spectacled bears do not walk on two feet, perhaps contributing to the fact that they have never been a prominent circus or performing bear.

Types of Animals
The Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus), South America's only bear species, inhabits the northern region of the Andes Mountains. Depending on the season and availability of food, they can be found at either lower or higher elevations. Like most bears, Spectacled Bears are omnivores, feeding on a variety of fruits, nuts, insects and small mammals in their territory. Studies of the stomach content of some animals shows that up to ninety five per cent of their diet consists of plants, seeds and fruits. They get their name from the light patch of fur on their nose and around their eyes. It looks like the bear is wearing spectacles. Males are larger than females and can grow six feet long and weigh up to three hundred and fifty pounds. Unlike other bears, spectacled bears do not walk on two feet, perhaps contributing to the fact that they have never been a prominent circus or performing bear.

The Spectacled Bear is listed on Appendix I of CITES (The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), which prohibits all international trade in these animals, or products and part thereof.
The spectacled bear is threatened by habitat loss as rain forests are disappearing and agricultural encroachment. Intensive mineral mining in certain areas is also destroying their natural habitat. they are often killed by farmers who retaliate against the loss of crops. There is evidence of illegal poaching to supply a local market of bear meat, fat, skin and claws. Gall bladders are occasionally removed to supply the Asian markets, fetching as much as US$150, which is five times the average monthly wage in Ecuador.
The Spectacled Bear is also known as the Andean Bear, and is the only South American bear species. It is named for the markings around its eyes, that are reminiscent of glasses. It is the last of the short-faced bear species.

    Bear Senses
    Bears in Idaho
In the forest, bears rely on their acute hearing and super sense of smell. Their noses perceive smells much fainter than humans can detect. With this super sense of smell, they can detect other animals that are near by, and they can find fruit, insect larvae, and the other foods. Bears can probably see as well as humans can. They can recognize shapes but not details at a distance, and they observe moving objects better than stationary objects. When you've got to find lots of food on the ground, sharp eyes that see color can come in handy. And that's exactly what the black bear has. Although their night vision is also excellent, bears forage for fruit during the day when they can perceive colors. People who live in Idaho are lucky to share their forests with a few grizzlies and a lots of black bears. As many as 20,000 black bears inhabit Idaho, but if you go looking for truly black bears, you might be surprised!
