News Article Keeping black bears wild Wildlife managers test out ways to keep bears away from food, people By Rachel Ehrenberg Web edition Friday, January 29th, 2010 Text Size Enlarge Smarter than the average bear? Black bears usually eat fruits, nuts, insects and the occasional fish. But once black bears have tasted human food, it’s harder to scare them from campsites and other areas, a new study shows. Karen Laubenstein/ U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Pepper spray, rocks or rubber slugs are good tools for scaring bears from park picnic areas. But the best way to get rid of black bears is to not invite them over to begin with. Trying out various techniques on bears in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in California, wildlife managers report some success in using obnoxious maneuvers, such as deploying sling shots and throwing rocks, to keep black bears from seeking people, food and garbage. But the approach was less successful with bears that already had a taste for the forbidden foodstuff, the study published in the January Journal of Wildlife Management shows Establishing which techniques and circumstances will thwart food-seeking bears is valuable, but such techniques should be tried only after making trash and food inaccessible, says Rachel Mazur, who led the study while she was a wildlife biologist at the Kings Canyon park. Bear-proof containers should be available and the public needs to be educated on using them, she says.

  • Grolar Bears: Wild Grizzly-Polar Bears Becoming More Common
Adjust font-size: Published May 17, 2010 by: William Browning View Profile Follow Add to Favorites ... Polar A grolar bear is a hybrid between a grizzly bear and polar bear. Although they look distinctly different the two bears do cross paths in the wild in Alaska and Canada as they hunt for food in extreme northern latitudes . Even though these two massive ursine animals do see each other in the wild they rarely interbreed. In 2006 National Geographic reported a hunter killed a wild grolar bear that is believed to be the first wild incidence of both animals interbreeding. What makes the wild case interesting is that bears have intimate mating rituals that last for days so the hybrid was more than just a chance encounter in the woods.
    Genetic Traits
A grolar bear will likely be smaller than a polar bear, the world's largest bear. In a picture from this zoo it appears that a grolar bear will have the shape of a polar bear with the darker fur of a grizzly. Look for a polar shape with the nose and smaller ears but with dark brown or maybe even dark gray fur. Hunters have shot wild grolars that are white and brown but with smaller noses and snouts like grizzly bears.

Keep Alaska Bears Wild and Anglers Safe By Bobbie Jo Skibo, Russian River Interagency Coordinator, Chugach National Forest The Russian River is a clear, shallow stream where anglers often target red (sockeye) salmon or rainbow trout. Similar to the rest of the Kenai Peninsula, brown and black bears inhabit this area, searching for food for themselves and/or their young. Unfortunately, the food sources they often find are coolers full of lunches, stringers of fish, and other sources of human generated food. These food sources are often left unattended on the banks while anglers are catching their limits. At the Russian River, the most abundant and readily available human generated food source for bears during June and July is filleted fish carcasses. When whole carcasses are thrown into the river, they pile up, creating a concentrated food source which is irresistible to some bears. The filleted carcasses collect at river bends, in slow moving eddies, and are being caught on monofilament line in the river. Gulls also drag whole filleted carcasses out onto the banks so they can feed on them. Confluence of bears and people.

It is flat land with slight ridges of hardwood and pine thickets surrounded by vast tracts of cypress swamps. Also, it contains many fields of peanuts, which whitetail deer, black bear and other game find to be their select choice of food. The high protein found in peanuts help to grow some of the biggest racks available in the state of NC. The whitetail deer leave the protection of the bottom lands to graze on peanuts and grain provided by us. Hunting Stands: we have 250 stands located at the Bertie County Camp. These stands are made up of shooting houses or ground blinds of those hunters who do not wish to climb, as well as ladder stands, tripod stands and many totally enclosed box stands with chairs or swivel seats. All of our ladder stands and tripod stands are provided with rails and curtains for your shooting comfort and safety. We do not use portable tree stands.

We are NOT located on or near the Cherokee Indian Reservation in Cherokee, NC If you want to experience the challenge of the fast paced excitement of real hunting free range, fair chase in Georgia we can assist your hunting needs. If you would rather hunt exotics or other animals contained within a fenced in area we can give you a referral to a reputable outfitter/lodge. We offer guide service to hunt wild boar, "feral" hogs, black bear, white tail deer, wild turkey and varmints in southeastern Georgia. This is NOT a "canned hunt", or a game preserve/lodge. The animals that we hunt are not confined to an enclosed area nor held in pens. The only fences you will encounter are the ones that nature put there. We cannot hunt any animal over bait, but we can hunt with or without professionally trained hounds. Still hunts are available using scents and other legal attractants. Chances for a successful hunt are greatly increased with the use of hounds for wild boar. We do not hunt deer or turkey with dogs.

Thanks to conservation efforts, better management and shifts in hunting activities, the number of black bears has climbed in the last hundred years, says ecologist Jon Beckmann with the Wildlife Conservation Society. So has the number of people, especially in the public lands of the American West. This means more bear-human interactions.

Map of Mason County area. Enjoy West Michigan at it's finest in Mason County, home of the Ludington State Park, great fishing, sandy beaches and, most importantly, an abundance of whitetail deer. Our primary hunt is for the elusive whitetail, but we are now booking black bear and turkey hunts as well.
Our goal is to create a hunt that is geared around the needs of each individual who makes a reservation. Most hunt locations are on private land near farming or grazing land. Baited locations as well as scouted travel routes are available for the hunter to choose from.
None of the deer are penned, all are free roaming and will require skill, planning and a bit of luck.
We are one of the few outfitters in the state to offer this type of hunt, because we know that many hunters do not have access to hunting lands or time to make preparations for a successful hunt.
A reservation with us and a reservation with a local lodging provider is all you need to do to be on top of some of the most fantastic whitetail hunting Michigan has to offer.
