Of course he didn't find out until afterwards that Mr. Rex here is a meat-eater! Lucky for him he had just had a big snack and wasn't the least bit hungry at the time! Me? I prefer my adventures a bit tamer than Sunshine... I don't like the idea of being a meal for whatever I am riding. Shortly after taking the picture of Sunshine, Mr. Rex decided that perhaps he could do with a little snack afterall. Good thing us bears are fast runners! By the time we got away from him, we were soooo hot and tired that a nice swim sounded really great! That's when I met my new friend...a non-bear-eating dolphin! All of that time I spent swimming at the Idol Pool really paid off! Sunshine thought he was a bit out of shape (hadn't been swimming in ages) and didn't want to risk another ride but I had a great time! 'Course it would have been a bit easier to hang on during those wild jumps if my friend here had been wearing a halter and saddle, but I managed anyway. Bear Awareness Month (BAM), spearheaded by the Kenai Brown Bear Committee (KBBC), is an annual effort to raise public awareness about how to stay safe in bear country and minimize bear attractants around our homes and in our communities. BAM kicks off in April since this is the time of the year when most bears begin to emerge from their dens throughout Alaska and are looking for food sources for themselves and for their young. The KBBC was founded in August 2004 and represents diverse interests such as tourism, hunting, fishing, conservation and government agencies. The group is primarily focused on developing consistent brown bear-related conservation and safety information for delivery to a wide range of audiences. Our goal is to increase the public’s understanding of bears and the importance of conserving brown bear habitat and hopefully decrease the number of brown bears killed in defense of life and property (DLP). The group looks forward to continuing its current partnerships and garnering new ones, furthering our common goal of helping to keep bears wild and neighborhoods safe. The KBBC focuses on education and community outreach and is responsible for the following efforts: In 2009, 1,076 youth were deputized as Junior Wildlife Rangers in our local schools and at events. The program, offered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and KBBC members, is designed to educate children in the school system about bear safety and to minimize bear attractants around homes. This program will continue again this spring. For information, contact Michelle Ostrowski, education specialist with the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, at 907-260-2839.

Press Releases Search DNR DNR Home Keep Maryland’s Black Bears Wild ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) Wildlife and Heritage Service (WHS) would like to remind people living in and visiting bear country to do their part to help keep Maryland’s black bears wild. In April, after a long winter slumber, bears begin to emerge from their dens hungry and looking for food. Bears may cover long distances in search of food, and will take advantage of unnatural food sources if they are available. Humans who make food available to bears usually create a problem for both bears and people.
Bears can easily become habituated to human activity and begin to associate people with food, leading to a potentially dangerous situation. Keeping bears wild is a community effort that benefits both bears and people, and spring is a good time to start. By not attracting the bears now, you can keep them away throughout the year.
Trash and birdfeeders are the two most common unnatural food sources that lure bears into developed areas. Keep trash locked in bear proof trash containers or inside buildings until the day of trash pick-up. Remove trash often so smells are less likely to attract an unwanted bruin. Clean trash cans with ammonia after they are emptied and rinse food cans before placing them in the trash.
Take bird feeders down from April through November, as natural foods are plentiful during this time. If you insist on feeding the birds, it is recommended that you bring your feeders in at night when bears are more active. This will not only prevent bears from eating your birdseed but it will also prevent them from destroying the feeder to get to the food. You may also consider hanging your bird feeders at least 10 feet above the ground and at least six feet from any vertical structure, such as a building or tree. Feeders can be hung this way from a cable suspended between two trees.

Stay safe: Keep bears wild October 19, 2009
Contact: Joy Hill, 352-732-1225 or 352-258-3426 Black bears in Florida are generally very shy and secretive animals that have a natural fear of people and prefer to avoid them if possible. However, they are large, powerful and unpredictable wild animals capable of injuring or even killing a person under certain conditions. Unfortunately, the lure of human-provided foods reduces their wariness and increases the chances of closer encounters with people. Many Florida communities are in or near ideal bear habitat and bears naturally wander into neighborhoods in search of food or new territory. Generally, they only stay around if they find a consistent source of food that is easy to get, such as garbage, bird seed, pet food and other human-provided goodies. "Bears are more of a public safety threat when they become habituated to humans and lose their natural fear," said Dave Telesco, coordinator of FWC's bear-management program. "In fact, the FWC has euthanized dozens of bears over the past few years that have lost their natural wariness and displayed fearless behavior, making them a potential threat to people. "Public safety and providing long-term solutions to human-bear conflicts are our top priorities," Telesco said. "This is why it is so critical that residents follow our recommendations and do all they can to keep attractants away from bears."

emergencies call 9-1-1 Home Resources Living with Wildlife RESOURCES Living with Wildlife Keeping Black Bears Wild in the Bow Valley The Living with Wildlife column is published monthly in the Rocky Mountain Outlook to create awareness of living with wildlife challenges. We also work with local newspapers, radio and television stations to promote wildlife safety issues through the media on a weekly basis. The Bow Valley is home to about a dozen or more black bears. Much like our population, some are part timers and others long term residents. Many of them have managed to coexist over the years, and others have not. Not aware of where wilderness ends and town boundaries begin, they often wander into human use areas in search of natural food sources and find themselves in resident’s yards, feeding on berry bushes and crab apple trees. While these food sources are not bad for them, being in town and in close proximity to humans is. Often unaware residents will leave out tasty treats like bird feed, dog food and garbage. These easily attained food sources will lead a bear to continue to frequent a residential area and eventually lose its wildness, potentially get into an encounter with humans or become addicted to human food. The solution does seem simple; remove the fruit bearing shrubs and trees. Easier said than done as many residents are unaware that they have bear attractants and others have a difficult time parting with their beautifully blooming shrubs and trees that bear fruit. It is however one of the compromises we must make if we want to continue to coexist with bears. By teaching bears that human use areas are not bear buffets we can keep them out of trouble with humans and in the wild where they belong. After losing 12 black bears in a span of three weeks last September, we have an opportunity this fall to be a part of the solution and help our community become safer for people and bears alike.
