Bees
Yellow-faced Bumble Bee (Drone) Native bees, of which there are over 3,500 in the United States, are important pollinators for backyard wildlife habitats. Their names are often indicative of their nesting styles. For example, mason bees use chambers of cement-like mud for their nest while digger bees construct nests in clay or sand banks. Yet, other bees are named after their traits such as the cuckoo bee. They lay eggs in the nest of other bees just like the cuckoo bird. Most native bees are gentle and solitary. One exception to this is our bumble bee (named from their humming sound while flying). It nests in a colony and can sting if provoked. If you want to watch a bumble bee clean itself and hear the humming sound.
Pollination Problems
Within the last ten (10) years, parasitic mites have devastated our wild honey bees causing a noticeable decline in backyard fruit and vegetable production. According to an article from the Oregon State University Extension Service in Douglas County entitled "Mason Bees As An Alternative," this devastation of honey bees is a nationwide problem. It's estimated that 30% of our food supply depends on pollination of a wide variety of plants by bees. In another article, from

More about Him

Did you ever eat (or throw away) a watermelon that tasted more like the rind than the sweet watermelon you were expecting? If so, your watermelon did not get pollinated well enough when it was only a blossom. How does a blossom get pollinated? The answer is bees. Bees gather pollen and nectar that they find in the blossoms. If bees don't go into the blossoms to forage for food, the blossoms won't make seeds. Without seeds, most fruits and vegetables won't develop properly and they won't taste good.

Anatomy of a Hive Amazing Bee Facts How this Film Was Made
Welcome to the companion Web site to the NOVA program "Tales from the Hive," originally broadcast on Tuesday, January 4, 2000. In this NOVA program, our cinematographer literally filmed inside a hive and followed bees in flight to capture closeups of honeybee behavior. Here's what you'll find online:
  • Anatomy of a Hive
A hive is more than just a buzz of activity. The social organization rivals that in the best-run corporations, with each bee and each cell possessing a rigidly specific function. Have a look at the physical, behavioral, and social infrastructure inside a bees' nest. The Buzz About Bees
Did you know that on average it takes the nectar from 10 million flowers to make one liter of honey? That a worker bee can carry half her weight in nectar and pollen and still fly? Beguile yourself with these and other fascinating facts about bees. Dances With Bees (Hot Science)
As viewers witnessed in "Tales From the Hive," individual honeybees will perform a specialized, wing-fluttering dance to inform other bees of the distance, direction, and richness of a new source of nectar. In this interactive feature, try your hand at successfully interpreting such a bee ballet.

YOU HAVE ARRIVED AT THE HOME PAGE OF HOG BAY APIARY
situated on beautiful Kangaroo Island in South Australia Owners Jim and Betty McAdam bid you welcome to THE OLDEST BEE SANCTUARY IN THE WORLD The Ligurian bee (Apis mellifera ligustica) was brought to Kangaroo Island in the early 1880's and released into the environment, adapting to the temperate climate. The pure strain of Ligurian bee now exists in the natural state only on Kangaroo Island and is an invaluable genetic resource preserved for future generations.
Environmental niche
Conservation of the pure Ligurian bee is vital to the world apiary industry, providing a benchmark for measuring hybridization of honey bees and as a genetic pool of pure Ligurian bees to enable queen breeders to maintain amongst commercially bred honey bees the docility and productivity for which the Ligurian bee is famous.
History of sanctuary

The origin and role of a queen bee

Ligurian queen bee breeder
Island apiarists produce superb honeys from the flowering eucalypts and other Australian and introduced flora. Pollen is gathered from native vegetation and farmland flowering species, improving pollination for improved germination of seeds. Pollen gathered for the hives provides the protein source for bee larvae. Bees also collect and process resins from vegetation into propolis, which is used by the hives against bacteria and to seal holes. Propolis has been used for many years in traditional medicines for its antibacterial properties.

31. Enemies Of Bees
Information on the most common bee diseases that occur in the United States with suggested treatments.

Enemies of Bees
Like most living things, honeybees can become diseased. The most common bee diseases in the United States are American foulbrood (AFB) and European foulbrood, which affect the brood. Nosema is the most serious ailment of adult bees.
Brood Diseases
In some areas, systematic applications of antibiotic chemicals during spring and fall hive examinations are used to prevent American and European foulbrood ( Table 2 ). Terramycin mixed with sugar has given effective disease control. After checking the brood frames and replacing them, sift the sugar-chemical mixture over the top of the brood frames. Terramycin controls both American and European foulbrood. Although American foulbrood can be cured, present bee laws require that bees infected with AFB be destroyed. The drug is to be used only as a preventive treatment.
Powdered Sugar Treatment
  • Combine one pound of powdered sugar with 1/4 cup of animal formula terramycin TM-25. Mix thoroughly by sifting four times with a household flour sifter.

Cooperative State Research Education and Extension Service
Office for Small-Scale Agriculture More than 211,000 beekeepers maintain about 3.2 million honey bee colonies in the United States. Thousands of beekeepers are small-scale entrepreneurs. Aside from the pleasures of the hobby, they keep honey bees for the production of honey, pollen, beeswax, propolis, and royal jelly. Only in the last century have people begun to recognize the value of bees as pollinators. Pollinators include not only honey bees, but also more than 3,500 species of pollen bees in North America. The contribution of bees as pollinators of cultivated crops far outweighs the value of hive products. Although most beekeepers specialize in honey bees, some raise pollen bees for their pollination services. Beekeeping's profitability depends on many factors, and the decision to enter this occupation should be made carefully. Bee-keepers should know about bee biology, flora, and management, and should also possess business ability. They should understand that beekeeping is subject to factors beyond their control - such as market prices that fluctuate and weather elements that range from drought to floods and temperature extremes. Entrepreneurs intent on commercializing should decide whether to be migratory or nonmigratory and select locations that offer opportunities for pollination rentals; production of honey, beeswax, or pollen; and selling of packaged bees and queens.

      2. Bees are found on every continent except Antarctica and in every habitat that has flowering plants.
      3. Bees feed on nectar and pollen by using a long tongue.
      4. Bees have antennae, two pairs of wings, enlarged hind feet, branched or feathered body hair, and some have a stinger.
      5. Bees are adapted for feeding on pollen which they turn into honey (a worker bee must visit 4,000 flowers to make 1 tablespoon of honey).
      6. Bees play a very important role in pollinating flowering plants and have fuzzy bodies that allows the pollen to stick to the bee.
      7. The smallest bee is the dwarf bee which is about 2.1 mm (5/64 of an inch) long and the largest bee can grow to 39 mm (1.5 inches).
      8. Crab spiders and assassin bugs hide in the flowers to capture the bees which makes collecting pollen dangerous work, but the primary reason honey bees are endangered is because of parasites.

    U.S. Geographic Killer Bee Spread
As of 2002, Africanized honey bees have spread from Brazil south to northern Argentina and north to Central America, Trinidad, Mexico, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Florida and now Southern California. The killer bee expansion stopped for a time at eastern Texas, possibly due to the large number of bee beekeepers in the area. However, discoveries of the killer bees in southern Louisiana indicate this species of bee has penetrated across the Caribbean Sea, or has come as a swarm aboard a cruise or cargo ship. In June 2005, it was discovered that the bees had penetrated the border of the state of Texas and had spread into Southwest Arkansas. On September 11, 2007, Department of Agriculture Commissioner Bob Odom y said that africanized honeybees established themselves in the New Orleans area.
At their peak rate of expansion, they spread north at a rate of almost one mile a day. In central tropical climates they compete effectively against the European bees. There had been talk about slowing the killer bee spread by placing large numbers of docile European-strain hives in strategic stopping locations, particularly at the narrow Isthmus of Panama, but they were unable to prevent the bees' expansion. The genetics of these killer bees, however, suggest that such a strategy, had it been attempted, would not have been successful.

Recently, the financial crisis has caused a reduction of demand for certain crops, such as almonds, that place unhealthy expectations on industrial bred honeybees and many hives have been able to recuperate. But there is still the unresolved, looming problem of colony collapse disorder (CCD, otherwise Nicolas Joly, the world famous biodynamic wine producer from the Loire Valley, applied to the case of the disappearing bees.
