Personal account of a visit to see the St bees Man exhibition in the village priory.

St. Bees Man
by Ben Best In mid-Summer 1996 I attended an APL computer-language conference at the University of Lancaster, in Britain. After the conference I rented a car and drove to the city of St. Bees in search of more information about "the most perfectly preserved medieval man in modern times". I have recorded my experience in detail for the benefit of others who may wish to investigate for themselves. But I will begin by quoting from THE BOGMAN by Don Brothwell, which is how I learned of St. Bees Man in the first place: "Within a well-constructed vault was a 'lead coffin', placed inside an iron-bound wooden coffin and packed with grey clay. In fact, the 'lead coffin' was nothing more than a sheet of lead wrapped around the body. When the lead was opened up, a shrouded figure was revealed. The body was eventually unwrapped and studied in detail before being reburied. When the outer and inner shrouds and the waxy embalming material were removed, a remarkably well-preserved body appeared to view, naked but for two pieces of string around the neck and penis (part of the 'laying-out' practice of the day)... "Dr. Eddie Tapp, who undertook the autopsy, was careful to note how the body looked when first unwrapped. The skin had a fresh pink appearance, which quickly faded. The eyes were in good condition, and the mucosa of the mouth looked fresh at first. Internal tissues were similarly well preserved, indeed the blood vessels even appeared to contain 'fresh' blood. A haemorrhage into the right plural (chest) cavity from a lung injury still appeared as dark red fluid (although the microscopic cellular structure had changed). Heart and intestines were intact, and when the liver was cut open, its surface was bright pink, although this faded quickly to brown. Such a degree of preservation had clearly depended on rapid embalming and the body's enclosure within lead, clay packing and wooden coffin. There was also evidence of adipocere development, whereby fatty acids are deposited

As they fly from flower to flower, field bees place pollen directly in the cells of developing larvae when they return to the hive where they also regurgitate nectar for its conversion into honey. The perfection and orderly development of a community of bees provides a fascinating study in social organization.

A well-perfected system of communication exists among the honeybees. In studies of bees begun in the early 1900s, the Austrian zoologist Karl von Frisch determined many of the details of their means of communication. In a paper published in 1923, von Frisch described how after a field bee discovers a new source of food, such as a field in bloom, she fills her honey sac with nectar, returns to the hive, and performs a vigorous but highly standardized

BEES
Powerful technique for selecting cost-effective, environmentally preferable building products. BEES (Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability) is based on consensus standards and designed to be practical, flexible, and transparent. BEES reduces complex, science-based technical content (e.g., over 400 environmental flows from raw material acquisition through product disposal) to decision-enabling results and delivers them in a visually intuitive graphical format. The Windows-based decision support software, aimed at designers, builders, and product manufacturers, includes actual environmental and economic performance data for nearly 200 building products (both generic and brand-specific). BEES measures the environmental performance of building products by using the environmental life-cycle assessment approach specified in ISO 14040 standards. All stages in the life of a product are analyzed: raw material acquisition, manufacture, transportation, installation, use, and recycling and waste management. Economic performance is measured using the ASTM standard life-cycle cost method, which covers the costs of initial investment, replacement, operation, maintenance and repair, and disposal. Environmental and economic performance are combined into an overall performance measure using the ASTM standard for Multi-Attribute Decision Analysis. For the entire BEES analysis, building products are defined and classified according to the ASTM standard classification for building elements known as UNIFORMAT II.

The earliest animal-pollinated flowers were pollinated by insects such as beetles , long before bees first appeared. Bees are different because they are specialized as pollination agents, with behavioral and physical modifications that make pollination easier. Bees are generally better at the task than other pollinating insects such as beetles, flies butterflies and pollen wasps. The appearance of such floral specialists is believed to have driven the

Students will understand the following:
Bees use the pollen from flowers as food. When they land on flowers to collect pollen, they spread pollen from one flower to another. Many plants cannot grow unless they are cross-pollinated by insects such as bees. Because bees cross-pollinate so many fruit and vegetable plants, they play a vital role in food production all over the world. Materials

Review with your students what they have learned about bees. Make sure they understand that bees use the pollen from flowers as food, and that, when bees land on flowers to collect pollen, they spread pollen from one flower to another. Tell the class that bees play a very important role in food production all over the world, and ask students if they can explain this fact. Tell students they are going to perform an experiment that will help them find the explanation or confirm the one they have given.

Quick Facts...
  • Most wasps develop by feeding on insects. Bees develop on a diet of nectar or pollen. Almost all insect stings result from yellowjackets and an insect newly established in the state, the European paper wasp. Yellowjackets, hornets and paper wasps make nests of paper. Honey bees and bumblebees make nests of wax. Solitary bees and wasps nest in holes in the ground, rotten wood or natural cavities. Some wasps even make mud nests.
Wasps and bees can be a serious nuisance problem throughout Colorado, particularly late in the summer when certain yellowjacket wasps forage at garbage and outdoor food areas. In overall balance, however, these insects are beneficial in their activities, particularly as predators of pest insects and as pollinators. It is important to distinguish between the various wasps and bees because their potential as problems and their control differ. Figure 1. Yellowjacket entering nest underneath wall.

Bee stripes may not keep predators away
By Katia Moskvitch Science reporter, BBC News Birds see bees differently from humans This could be the way bumblebees fly or perhaps the buzzing sound they make, say the scientists. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Zoology. Scientists have long believed that once flying predators get stung by a bee, they remember their experience and in the future rely strongly on colour cues to identify their prey. "The first time a bird eats a brightly coloured bumblebee it gets a nasty surprise. Remembering the bee's bright colours may help the bird to avoid making the same mistake again," said Dr Nigel Raine from the School of Biological Sciences at Royal Holloway, University of London, a researcher on the study.

(NaturalNews) A new study set to be published in the journal The American Naturalist has discovered that bees' tiny brains are capable of performing mathematical functions far more quickly and efficiently than even today's most powerful computers. According to the study, bees are able to quickly calculate the shortest flying routes among their network of flowers and plants in order to minimize flying time, a feat that even the speediest computers take days to solve.
For years, researchers have been trying to solve the "traveling salesman problem", an efficiency conundrum centered around how best to route sales calls to save time and increase efficiency. But scientists from Royal Holloway, University of London, have found the answer in an insect

South of the harbours of Maryport, Workington and Whitehaven, sandy beaches and grassy foreshores give way to cliffs around St. Bees Head, a high promontory, which was a danger to small coastal vessels trading between the ports of Wales and the Solway Firth.
In 1718, Trinity House obtained a patent for the building of a lighthouse on the Head and in turn leased it to a private individual Thomas Lutwige, for ninety-nine years at an annual rent of £20. Lutwige undertook to erect the tower and maintain a light at his own expense. To provide him with an income, dues were levied at a rate of three-half pence a ton on cargo carried by vessels calling at the nearby ports of Whitehaven, Maryport and Workington.
Lutwige built a strong round tower 9 metres in height and 5 metres in diameter, probably of local sandstone on top of which was a large metal grate into which the keepers tipped loads of coal. Work was strenuous particularly on windy nights and the keepers were rewarded with a weekly wage of seven shillings.
The small grate led to continual complaints from shipowners because on windy nights the light was variable in intensity and often shrouded in thick smoke.

Function
The British Epidermo-Epidemiology Society is a multi-disciplinary group that was formed in 1990 with the aim of stimulating and promoting high scientific standards of research into the epidemiology of skin disease and to facilitate publishing the results of such research. In addition to traditional descriptive epidemiology, the groups's remit also includes health services research as applied to dermatology and intervention studies such as clinical trials. The group represents a "half way house" between dermatologists and epidemiologists, public health physicians, social scientists and statisticians in order to encourage inter-disciplinary and collaborative research. At the annual meeting, there is an emphasis on discussing methodological problems openly and for sounding out preliminary results. Overseas members are welcome at the BEES meetings and current membership stands at over 100. A formal constitution for BEES was agreed upon in January 1995 and an Executive Committee, chaired by Professor Hywel Williams, has been in place since. BEES is also a registered charity and an affiliated group of the British Association of Dermatologists. BEES runs a very popular 3-day course in evidence-based dermatology at Nottingham each year – usually in February. All those interested in epidemiology and health services research as applied to dermatology are encouraged to join BEES, to come to our meetings and courses and to work together collaboratively like the bees in nature.
