[Name] Classroom Management [Date] Classroom Management Plan Philosophical Statement I am committed to making my classroom a safe and challenging environment and engaging my students through the curriculum as well as getting to know them and interacting with them one-on-one. I believe that meeting the needs of my students is a very crucial part of my classroom. I want them to be comfortable with the other students, as well as me, so that there can be meaningful discussions and interactions. Talking will be common place in my classroom, along with group work. I want to encourage all students to participate in class so that they can learn from each other as well as me. I want to have a democratic and equitable classroom so that students can learn. I want to be a fair as I can be, so the students trust me. Room Arrangement Having the tables in a circle will create an environment rich in discussions. I think it is very important to engage students in discussion to try to draw out and challenge ideas and let the class learn from each other. No one is sitting behind the circle or on the sides of the room; the class enjoys the eye contact and facial expressions of everyone as they share ideas. Students can "create knowledge, not simply absorb it from higher authorities," (p. 439, Bigelow) in the classroom where personal experiences are shared and learned. I believe the circle of tables encourages discussion and in turn, students learn from each other. I want supplemental materials for students to have access to for studying, writing or researching. I will have bookshelves in the corner where students can research and use resources supplemental to the textbooks. There will be a few computers for projects, reports and research, as well as use of applications to present reports to the class (i.e. PowerPoint). Students will also have access to the computer lab in the school where they can learn social studies as well as technology by integrating the lessons. This will foster a holistic-learning approach that I will strive to teach to my students. We will not be solely learning the facts of history, but will be integrating art, math, geography, science and psychology to deepen our understanding of our units.

    Lesson Plans
Elementary Lesson Plans Paper and tempera paints For Multicultural month in Chesapeake, the 2nd graders at Cedar Road Elementary learned more about China and the tradition of the Chinese New Year. Using this knowledge, they created Chinese dragon puppets by drawing the dragon through step-by-step instruction, painting the dragon with tempera cakes, and then cutting them out with assembling the body. To download full lesson plan please click here: chinesedragonpuppets Grade Level: 4th During Multicultural month, the 4th grade students studied the Aborigines of Australia and their Dreamtime art. For the project, the students were provided examples of Aboriginal symbols to use in the creation of their own Dreamtime drawings. After the drawings were complete, the students were given the chance to write down their stories to share with the class. While focusing on harmony, balance and unity (principles of design), the students created  Mandalas using personal symbolism and analogous colors to reflect their own personalities.

    Welcome!
April 20, 2008 in Art Education Teaching Portfolio Comments closed Thank you for visiting my teaching portfolio for Art Education. A Short Bio My roots run deep in Tidewater. Born and raised in Chesapeake, I experienced a wonderful education in the public school system while enjoying the local scenery, such as the beach, wetlands and everything in between. I went away to the mountains for college and spent a few years just a few hours north of here and now I have come home to my family and the Tidewater area. I obtained a Bachelors of Fine Arts from James Madison University in 1997. My major was Studio Arts with a concentration in Weaving and Textile Design, and my minor was Art History. Currently, I am working on my Virginia Teaching Licensure in Art Education K -12 at Old Dominion University. My expected completion date is May 2008. You will find in this publication my resume, my philosophy of teaching,  my thoughts on behavior management, examples of lesson plans from my student teaching experiences, as well as art from both my students and myself. The trip has been a long one and well worth the effort. I look forward to teaching in the Tidewater area and giving back to the community that helped me find and reach my potential in life.

Tags: art art lessons art teaching behavior management ... Leave a Comment Over the next few days, I’d like to offer up some ideas for team building exercises. I attended a conference a few years ago called COCA (Children’s Oncology Camping Association.) For 9 years now, I have volunteered every summer at Camp Can Do, a week-long sleep away camp for kids with cancer. It is the most rewarding, enjoyable week of my entire year, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. When I was offered the opportunity to attend COCA, I jumped at the chance. There, I learned great ideas for fun icebreakers and team building activities that don’t necessarily have to happen at camp. After struggling with some animosity between my students, I decided to use some of the ideas from COCA in my classroom. Especially at the beginning of the year, I spend the first 5 or 10 minutes of class letting my kids learn how to work together.
