Belarus Culture, Map, Flag, Tourist Places
Much of Belarus (formerly the Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic of the USSR, and then Byelorussia) is a hilly lowland with forests, swamps, and numerous rivers and lakes. There are wide rivers emptying into the Baltic and Black Seas. Its forests cover over one-third of the land and its peat marshes are a valuable natural resource. The largest lake is Narach, 31 sq mi (79.6 sq km). Belarus was settled by the Slavs, who still dominate the country between the 6th and 8th centuries. The Early East Slavs gradually came into contact with the Varangians and were organized under the state of Rus', mainly in the area around modern-day Polatsk in the northern part of the country. In the 13th century, the state was badly affected by a Mongol invasion, and eventually parts of Rus' and Samogitia were swallowed up by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The core lands of the duchy comprised the Belarusian territories that included the modern-day city of Navahradak as the first capital. During this time, the country was largely at peace. By the 15th century, the Grand Duchy stretched across much of Eastern Europe, from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea. Since the late century, national activists have based their attempts to create an independent Belarusian state based on the Belorussian language, which had been kept alive over the centuries mainly by peasants. The stage was set for the emergence of a national consciousness by the industrialization and urbanization of the nineteenth century and by the consequent publication of literature in the Belorussian language, which was often suppressed by Russian, and later Polish, authorities. It is ironic, then, that the first long-lived Belorussian state entity, the Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (Belorussian SSR), was created by outside forces-the Bolshevik government in Moscow. And it was those same forces, the communists, whose downfall in 1991 precipitated the existence of an independent Belarus, which has been torn between its desire for freedom and a longing for integration with newly independent Russia.

Culture
Belarus possesses a rich folklore and a legacy of literature, art, and architecture from the Kievan and Lithuanian periods. The 18th and 19th centuries were a time of Polish and Russian cultural ascendancy. A Belorussian literary rebirth began at the turn of the 20th century, and native cultural life was vibrant in the 1920s. Beginning in the 1930s Soviet policy favored the Russian language and culture; only in the late 1980s did Belorussian cultural life experience a revival. Back for more about Belarus

Architecture. Belarus lies on a spiritual boundary between the Eastern and Western Europe, in the break of their cultural areas and religious systems. This, naturally, effected the specificity of the Belarusian architecture. First towns on the territory of Belarus appeared in the early Middle Ages. Polotsk and Vitebsk are the most ancient of them. In the X century the first cross–dome Orthodox Sofia cathedral was erected in Polotsk, which laid the foundations for the Belarusian monumental architecture. Eastern Slavic architect monk Joanne also came from Polotsk, where he erected a small cathedral of the Saved Transfiguration Monastery in the XII century. In the XIII century the period of total defense architecture set on. The main type of monumental constructions were castles of princes and magnates with powerful walls and towers build of huge boulders and big–size bricks, surrounded by ramparts and ditches. The donjon tower in Kamenets, castles in Lida, Krevo, Mir, Nesvizh, Grodno remained. Orthodox churches were transformed into small fortresses flanked by battle towers in their corners. All the neighboring population gathered in them in case of military danger. In the middle of the XVI century a new architectural and artistic style of Baroque appeared, which would dominate for the next two centuries. The first work of Baroque was Roman–Catholic Church in Nesvizh, center of possessions of the Radzivillis princes. That temple became a shoot to give growth to the original architecture of the Belarusian Baroque.

Culture
Belarusian culture is the product of a millennium of development under the impact of a number of diverse factors. These include the physical environment; the ethnographic background of Belarusians (the merger of Slavic newcomers with Baltic natives); the paganism of the early settlers and their hosts; Byzantine Christianity as a link to the Orthodox religion and its literary tradition; the country's lack of natural borders; the flow of rivers toward both the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea; and the variety of religions in the region (Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Judaism, and Islam). An early Western influence on Belarusian culture was Magdeburg Lawcharters that granted municipal self-rule and were based on the laws of German cities. These charters were granted in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries by grand dukes and kings to a number of cities, including Brest, Hrodna, Slutsk, and Minsk. The tradition of self-government not only facilitated contacts with Western Europe but also nurtured self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and a sense of civic responsibility. In 1517-19 Frantsishak Skaryna (ca. 1490-1552) translated the Bible into the vernacular (Old Belorussian). Under the communist regime, Skaryna's work was vastly undervalued, but in independent Belarus he became an inspiration for the emerging national consciousness as much for his advocacy of the Belorussian language as for his humanistic ideas.
