    From Library Journal
Belarus (formerly Belorussia) is the western-most republic in the Commonwealth of Independent States, with stronger historical ties to Europe than to Moscow, according to this new survey. It has a long history of outside government, from Poland and Lithuania, and a tradition of ethnic coexistence; these traits are reemerging after the breakup of the USSR. Zaprudnik, formerly an analyst at Radio Liberty, devotes four chapters of his survey to the history of Belarus (to 1985) and four to the conditions and prospects of the new state, covering the national and language revival, politics, economics, and foreign relations. Throughout, he is harshly critical of the Soviet government and its "ethnocidal" policies in Belarus. His bibliography is replete with specialized, non-English, sources. Not much is available in... History
Beginning in the 6th century the territory of modern Belarus was settled by East Slavic tribes, the ancestors of the Belorussians. In the 9th and 10th centuries several principalities emerged, the most important being centered around Polotsk (Polatsk) Through dynastic links they came to be part of Kievan Rus' and were converted to Orthodox Christianity.
After the disintegration of Kievan Rus' in the 13th century, the Belorussian lands were incorporated into the expanding Grand Duchy of Lithuania. At first the Belorussians exerted a strong religious and cultural influence on the pagan Lithuanians; after the dynastic union of Lithuania and Poland in 1386, however, the Lithuanians converted to Latin Christianity, and the position of the Orthodox Belorussians began to decline. The Belorussian bishops accepted union with Rome in 1596. Most of the population adhered to the EASTERN RITE (Uniate) church, but the nobility largely adopted Latin Rite Catholicism along with the Polish language and culture.
In the Partitions of Poland (1772, 1793, and 1795; see POLAND, PARTITIONS OF), Belarus was annexed to the Russian Empire. In the 19th century the Russians and Poles competed for the loyalty of the Belorussian (largely peasant) masses.Only in the late 19th century, after a peasant revolt led by Kastus Kalinouski (Konstantin Kalinovsky) in 1863, did a distinct Belorussian national awareness begin to develop. This was further stimulated by a literary revival, exemplified by the works of the Belorussian poets Yakub Kolas and Yanka Kupala.

In recent years Belarus (formerly known as Belorussia) has been less visible to the world than the Baltic republics to the north or Ukraine to the south, yet this multiethnic republic has undergone a significant demographic social, cultural, and political evolution since 1956. A proclamation of state sovereignty in July 1990 combined with the

    History
The first written document of the Belarusan statehood goes far back as 980 AD when Prince Rogvold began his reign on Polotsk lands which are the historic and religious center of the Belarusan nation and culture. The formation of the features of Belarusan people began in special socioeconomic and political conditions of the Polotsk Principality. The young, fast growing state made close trade ties with German (Hansa) cities, with Scandinavia, neighboring eastern and southern principalities. On the Polotsk territory under the influence of local cultural views the traditions of Byzantine architecture were revaluated and as a result the outstanding Polotsk architecture school emerged in the 12th century. It greatly influenced the architecture of Smolensk and Vladimir-Suzdal principalities and later of the Moscow state. From the 13th till the 16th century the territory of contemporary Belarus was the center of a medieval polyethnic state-Grand Duchy of Litva. The Grand Duchy of Litva which is sometimes called by historians Belarusan-Lithuanian state was one of the largest, most powerful and flourishing states in medieval Eastern Europe. The lands of contemporary Belarus, Lithuania, Ukraine and a part of Russia comprised this state. The large role of ethnic Belarusans in this state is proved by the fact that the state language in the Grand Duchy of Litva was Belarusan. Grand Duchy of Litva-Belarusan-Lithuanian State in 13-16 centuries In 1569 the Grand Duchy of Litva and the Polish Kingdom established a political union according to which the Litva-Poland confederation- Rzecz Pospolita-emerged. As a result of three divisions of Rzecz Pospolita in 1772, 1793 and 1795 between three empires - Russia, Austria and Prussia - the Belarusan lands were incorporated into the Russian Empire. So the third division of Rzecz Pospolita in 1795 practically checked the development of Belarusan statehood for more than 100 years.

The History of Belarus goes back to more than a thousand years. The country of Belarus is a landlocked nation. The countries of Russia surround it to the north and east, the country of Poland is in the west, to the south is Ukraine and to the north is Latvia and Lithuania. The capital city is Minsk. The Geography of Belarus features a flat terrain with forests and lakes. Take one of the Belarus Tours and know about the milestones in the History of Belarus The History of Belarus goes back to the 6th century when it was first inhabited by East Slavs. They formed a polity with the Varangians which is known as the Kievan Rus'. The Varangians were Scandinavians and Baltic Slavs warriors. This state began in the site of the present day Novgorod in 862. When Prince Yaroslav the Wise of the Kievan Rus' died, the state was divided into many independent principalities. In the 13th century these principalities were affected by a Mongol invasion. Later the state was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Later this Duchy fought with Poland against the Teutonic Knights in 1410 at the Battle of Grunwald. With the joint victory of the Duchy and Poland the Eastern Europe's northwestern border lands came under their control. Another important Historical Fact of Belarus is when the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland were joined through a marriage of their rulers on February 2, 1386. With this union the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was created in 1569. Later Tsar Ivan the III of Russia began military conquests to get the Kievan Rus' lands which included Belarus. Another major turning point in the
