Belgium derives its name from the Belgae, a Celtic tribe. The Belgae were forced to yield to Roman legions during the first century B.C. For some 300 years thereafter, what is now Belgium flourished as a province of Rome. But Rome's power gradually lessened. In about A.D. 300, Attila the Hun invaded what is now Germany and pushed Germanic tribes into northern Belgium. About 100 years later, the Germanic tribe of the Franks invaded and took possession of Belgium. The northern part of present-day Belgium became an overwhelmingly Germanized and Germanic-Frankish-speaking area, whereas in the southern part people continued to be Roman and spoke derivatives of Latin. After coming under the rule of the Dukes of Burgundy and, through marriage, passing into the possession of the Hapsburgs, Belgium was occupied by the Spanish (1519-1713) and the Austrians (1713-1794).
Under these various rulers, and especially during the 500 years from the 12th to the 17th century, the great cities of Ghent, Bruges, Brussels, and Antwerp took turns at being major European centers for commerce, industry (especially textiles), and art. Flemish paintingfrom Van Eyck and Breugel to Rubens and Van Dyckbecame the most prized in Europe. Flemish tapestries hung on castle walls throughout Europe.

An Ethnography of Late Medieval Bruges

June 2004 Hardcover Lady and the Unicorn Tracy Chevalier December 2004 Paperback Book Review If you think you wouldn't raise your skirts for a rakish legend about the purifying powers of a unicorn's horn, then maybe you aren't a 15th-century serving girl under the sway of a velvet-tongued court painter of ill repute. In keeping with her bestselling Girl with a Pearl Earring, and its Edwardian-era follow-up, Falling Angels, Tracy Chevalier's tale of artistic creation and late-medieval amours, The Lady and the Unicorn is a subtle study in social power, and the conflicts between love and duty. Nicolas des Innocents has been commissioned by the Parisian nobleman Jean Le Viste to design a series of large tapestries for his great hall (in real life, the famous Lady and the Unicorn cycle, now in Paris's Musee National du Moyen-Age Thermes de Cluny). While Nicolas is measuring the walls, he meets a beautiful girl who turns...

Europe Geographia World Introduction to Belgium Brussels ... Art Cities Clickable Timeline The Ancient Celts After Clovis' death the Merovingian kingdom began to fragment, and the Frankish lands did not come together under single rule again until the reign of Pepin III (the Short) in 751. Pepin deposed the last of the Merovingians and founded the Carolingian dynasty, which is named after his son Charlemagne. Charlemagne succeeded his father in 768 and ruled for almost a half century, creating during that time an empire that covered nearly all of continental Europe, with the exception of Spain and Scandinavia. In 800, Pope Leo III crowned him Emperor of the West. Although Charlemagne spent much of his reign conquering and subduing various parts of Europe, he also did much to foster commerce and the arts. The beginnings of organized trade along Belgium's rivers was one result of his reign, as was the preservation of classical learning and the arts. On Charlemagne's death, his empire was divided, and familial feuding led finally to the Treaty of Verdun in 843. Under the terms of the treaty, three of Charlemagne's grandsons split the empire between them. West Francia, under Charles the Bold, formed the basis of France. The Middle Kingdom was given to Lothair, though it would soon fragment. East Francia, under Louis the German, became the basis of Germany. West Francia included the narrow strip of land north and west of the Scheldt river in today's Belgium. The remainder of present-day Belgium was included first in the Middle Kingdom, under Lothair, but it gradually came under the sway of the German kings.

    • Roman Period ( 57 B.C. to 455 A.D) :
Between 57 and 50 B.C. Julius Cesar conquered the northern part of Gaul, the area lying roughly in the basins of the Scheldt and the Meuse. The land was inhabited then by Gallo-Celtic tribes, including the BELGAE. Between 15 B.C. and the fifth century it was under Roman occupation as Gallia Belgica until Rome weakened and the Francs began to penetrate the region.
    • Frankish Empire (455-843) :
As a result of the advance of the Franks, a Germanic people, in the 5th century, the Flemings prevailed in the north (an area stretching from the lower Scheldt to the Ardennes) , separating them from the WALA (Walloons or Romanized Celts), whose Latin influence underlies the French language of the region. And so, the ethnic and linguistic frontiers of today had their beginning. Upon Charlemagne's death, the area later known as Belgium, was among the first objectives of invaders and remained a battlefield for hundreds of years.
