Belgium : History
Belgium derives its name from a Celtic tribe, the Belgae, whom Caesar described as the most courageous tribe of Gaul. the Belgae were forced to yield to Roman legions during the first century B.C. For some 300 years thereafter, what is now Belgium flourished as a province of Rome. But Rome's power gradually lessened. In about A.D. 310, Attila the Hun invaded what is now Germany and pushed Germanic tribes into northern Belgium. About 100 years later, the Germanic tribe of the Franks invaded and took possession of Belgium. The northern part of present-day Belgium became an irresistibly Germanized and Germanic-Frankish-speaking area, whereas in the southern part people continued to be Roman and spoke derivatives of Latin. After coming under the rule of the Dukes of Burgundy and, through marriage, passing into the possession of the Hapsburgs, Belgium was occupied by the Spanish and the Austrians. Last updated : Nov 2009 Belgium History Belgium Flemish cloth towns enjoyed great financial and political power, although the area fell again under French control after 1322. A period of instability ended with the accession of Philip of Burgundy in 1419. However, on the death of his son, Charles the Bold , in 1477, the Low Countries passed to the Hapsburgs . The Protestant northern part rebelled against Philip II of Spain in the 1560s and soon the division between the southern provinces and the northern United Provinces (the basis for the modern-day Netherlands) became established.

Here's a fact to wow your friends: On this date in 1956, the world's largest iceberg was discovered in the South Pacific Ocean by the USS Glacier, a Navy icebreaker. About the size of Belgium, this massive iceberg measured 208 miles long and 60 miles wide (over 12,000 sq miles).

I think there is more to it. In my son's private school in Seattle (The Bush School) the history curriculum includes a course on European history from 1940 on. Is this a bizarre date or what? Germany attacked Poland in 1939, but this doesn't seem important. They concentrate on countries like Italy, France, Czech Republic, which more or less cooperated with Nazi Germany, omitting Poland, the only continental Europe country that fought Nazi Germany from the beginning, including 300k army fighting in France, Africa, Italy, Belgium, Great Britain and Russia.

Facts

The area now known as Belgium has witnessed a great deal of political, economic and cultural change in its history going right back to the first century BC when it was under Roman rule.
In more recent history, Belgium was until its independence in 1830, a prized area amongst many French conquerors in particular and witnessed much conflict during the Franco-Spanish and Franco-Austrian wars of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The 1794 French Revolutionary Wars led to the Low Countries being annexed by the French First Republic, ending the previous Spanish-Austrian rule in the area. The reunification of the Low Countries as the United Kingdom of the Netherlands then only followed after the fall of the First French Empire in 1815.
Independence of Belgium under a provisional government and national congress was established in 1830 as part of the Revolution which took place. The crowning of King Leopold I in 1831, resulted in Belgium becoming a constitutional monarchy and also parliamentary democracy from then on.
A shadow in Belgium's history was created in when in in 1908 the Congo Free State was given to Belgium as a colony (thereafter known as the Belgian Congo). Following this colonisation and whilst Leopold II's remained Head of State to whom the territory had been gifted, he was said to have been responsible for numerous acts including the proporgation of slavery, use of torture, and the murder of millions of Congans with the aim of seizing local raw materials and resources such as ivory, previous stones and rubber.

Belgium Travel Guide One can say that the Belgium history began somewhere around the beginning of 57 BC when Julius Caesar extended the power of Rome into the region of Europe that is now Belgium. history of Belgium can be categorized into different periods. Ancient Belgium's History
The various Celtic tribes of the early Gaul period and the Romans dubbed the early province Gallia Belgica. In the fourth century AD, a Germanic tribe known as the Franks who were earlier employed as mercenaries took over the control of Gaul. By the year 431, the Franks had established an independent dynasty known as the Merovingian. The area under their control included large parts of present day France and Belgium as well as southwestern Germany. Medieval History
The Burgundian Period
The New Kingdom
The rise of Napoleon saw the French rule over Belgium becoming more constructive and was also instrumental in the revitalization of the industry. However, with the fall of Napoleon the great allied powers decided to make Belgium a part of the Netherlands Kingdom which was then ruled by the pro-Dutch William of Orange. However, with patience of the Belgians running out there was wide spread revolution in Brussels which quickly engulfed other parts of the country. Though William did try to make a brief attempt to regain control he stopped the effort within a few months. It was finally on the 20th of January, 1831, after centuries of external rule that Belgium gained recognition as an independent nation.

Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in 1830 and was occupied by Germany during World Wars I and II. It has prospered in the past half century as a modern, technologically advanced European state and member of NATO and the EU. Tensions between the Dutch-speaking Flemings of the north and the French-speaking Walloons of the south have led in recent years to constitutional amendments granting these regions formal recognition and autonomy.
