Europe Geographia World Introduction to Belgium Brussels ... Art Cities Clickable Timeline The New Kingdom W ith the rise of Napoleon, French rule over Belgium became more constructive, including the revitalization of industry and (with the opening of the Scheldt) the partial recovery of Antwerp . With Napoleon's fall, the great Allied powers decreed that Belgium would become a part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, ruled by the pro-Dutch William of Orange. By 1830 the Belgians' patience had run out. Revolution erupted in Brussels and quickly spread across the country. William made a brief effort to regain control, but within a few months he withdrew. On 20 January, 1831, after centuries of external rule, Belgium was recognized as an independent nation. The Belgians chose Leopold of Saxe-Coburg to be their first King, under a constitution that significantly limited the power of the monarchy . Under Leopold I and then his son Leopold II, Belgium flourished both economically and culturally. It was Leopold II who acquired the Congo, which remained a part of Belgium until its independence in 1960.

Dutch national flag - Image by , 22 April 1999 French First Empire , the Vienna Congress decided to unify Belgium and Holland under William I's rule. The new Kingdom of the Netherlands inherited more than 200 vessels abandoned by France in the ports of Den Helder and Antwerp . Since those vessels were old, the King decided to start a reconstruction program and it took 15 years to build 34 new vessels. Holland and Belgium shared the costs.
These warships as well as the merchant navy used the horizontally divided red-white-blue Dutch ensign, already known in the XVIth century.

    Antwerp and Belgium History
Here you will find Belgium history with a focus on Antwerp. The Origin of Antwerp: Brabo and the Giant Antigone. Scientists claim that the name of Antwerp comes from: 'anda verpus'. Which means something along the lines of 'a piece of land being brought in front'. They think that because of the redirection of the river in the 7th century, local Benedictine priests build a new harbor a few miles in front of the old harbor. They spoke about an anda verpus, which became andaverpus, andverpus, andverpia, antverpia and later Antwerpen..... We think it's all a bit far fetched ...
Brief history of the Middle Ages
I’d like to start Antwerp and Belgium History with where the legend of Brabo ends, in the ... Middle Ages. Brief history of Antwerp's Golden Age
At the end of the 15th century, Antwerp became more important then Bruges. Businesses were moved to Antwerp and the money followed. Bruges lost its direct connection to the see and would become a small provincial town. In 1400, around 18000 people lived in Antwerp. Barely 100 years later this would be 100 000 and with that became the biggest city of its time after Paris.New economical systems were developed here as the stakeholder ship and the first stock market in the world was build in 1531. It would stand as a model for the ones in London and Amsterdam.

    Belgium : History
Under these various rulers, and especially during the 500 years from the 12th to the 17th century, the great cities of Ghent, Bruges, Brussels, and Antwerp took turns at being major European centers for commerce, industry (especially textiles), and art. Flemish paintingfrom Van Eyck and Breugel to Rubens and Van Dyckbecame the most prized in Europe. Flemish tapestries hung on castle walls throughout Europe. In 1830, Belgium won its independence from the Dutch as a result of an uprising of the Belgian people. A constitutional monarchy was established in 1831, with a monarch invited in from the House of Saxe-Coburg Gotha in Germany. Belgium was invaded by Germany in 1914 and again in 1940. Those invasions, plus disillusionment over postwar Soviet behavior, made Belgium one of the foremost advocates of collective security within the framework of European integration and the Atlantic partnership.

People of Belgium The people of Belgium can be divided into two ethnic groups - the Flemings, who are of Teutonic origin and the Walloons, who are of Celtic origin. These two groups can be distinguished on the basis of the languages they speak- the Flemings speak Dutch while the Walloons speak French.
Around 97 per cent of the population lives in urban areas even as the capital, Brussels, serves as home to a number of foreign guests. Arts, Culture and Music of Belgium Festivals play an important role among the people of Belgium. One of the most famous festivals is the three-day carnival at Binche, near Mons, held just before Lent. The carnival is a period of merry-making and joy and is characterized by songs and dances led by "Gilles," men dressed in high, plumed hats and bright costumes. Other important occasions include Procession of the Holy Blood, held in Brugge in May and Saint Nicholas's Day held every year on December 6, which also commemorates as an important children's holiday. Flag of Belgium The flag of Belgium is made up of three equal vertical bands - black towards the hoist side, yellow in the middle and red towards the right. The design of this flag is based on the flag of France.
