    Belize Culture
Without a doubt, the great attraction of Belize is its coral reef, nevertheless, this does not mean that the country does not have a strong culture rooted in its people. The strongest cultural influence came from the great Mayan civilization which existed fro centuries in Central America., leaving its rich and fascinating monuments and pyramids, not only for its descendants to visit and explore, but also for tourists from around the world. During the classical period of the Mayan Empire, the primary ceremonial center was the Altun Ha. Between the years, 1000 B.C. and 1400 A.D., it was an important city and also the commercial hub connecting the other interior and coastal Mayan centers. The temple to the sun god was also located there. The ruins of Altun Ha consisted of two principal courtyards with thirteen temples and some residential structures. Archeological evidence indicates that the Mayans established themselves in Altun Ha. from 200 B.C., with various stages of reoccupation until the fourteenth century.

Known formerly as British Honduras, Belize has features unique to its
neighboring countries. One is that it is the only country in Central
America which has English as its official language; and also, it is the lone nation in the continent which does not have a coastline on the Pacific. It only has the Caribbean shoreline on its east. All of which make Belize culture unique. The population of Belize is a melting pot of wonderful people coming from all sorts of races and ethnicity. To get to know Belize culture better, take note that a Belizean can come from a lineage of English, Garifuna, Lebanese, East Indian, Mestizo, Mennonite, Spanish, Chinese, Creole, and Maya. The Garifuna or Garinagus (as they are sometimes called) lead the towns of Hopkins, Georgetown, Punta Gorda, Dangriga, Seine Bight, and Barranco. Every November 19, which is marked as a national

Belize : Culture
Belize is a cultural unusually in Central America, with a society oriented more to Britain, the English-speaking Caribbean countries, and North America, than to neighboring Spanish-speaking republics. During the 1980s, efforts to forge a common national identity among a small, multi ethnic population challenged the colonial orientations of Belizean society. Regional conflicts, migration, and intensified relationships with the United States also posed challenges. The deepening of social, economic, and political ties to the United States during the 1980s prompted critics in Belize and abroad to complain that the nation merely exchanged one colonial master for another. In addition, emigration of Belizeans to the United States and of Central Americans to Belize further challenged Belizean society, which was already deeply separated by differences of ethnicity, race, and class. Belize might appear to be the first postcolonial "plural society," a mosaic of discrete cultural groups with their own value systems and institutional forms, joined together only by the forces of the marketplace and coercive authority. Indeed, a number of scholars have described Belize as split between two cultural complexesone English-speaking, and Creole, and the other Spanish-speaking , and Mestizo. Belizean social and cultural variety was, much more complex than this bipolar model suggests. Language and religion cut across ethnic and racial categories. Moreover, race was a complex and elusive concept.

Approximately 200,000 people in Belize consist of Creole, Garifuna, Mestizo, Spanish, Maya, English, Mennonite, Lebanese, Chinese, and East Indian. Due to racial harmony and religious tolerance, all of these different elements have mixed and blended successfully, and Belize has gained a widespread reputation for its friendly peoples. One of the most prominent ethnic group is the Creoles, which formed 30% of the population in 2001. Creoles are descendants of the intermingling of the early British settlers with African slaves.More than 40% of the population are Mestizos. They are descendants of mixed blood Mexicans and Yucatec Mayans who fled from Yucatan in the mid 1800's. Another 6.6% of Belize's population are the Garifuna. The Garifuna have their own language and culture. Creoles The Creoles are descendants of British settlers and African slaves and can be more recognized by their values and way of life rather than by a biological manner. Two thirds of the Creole population reside in Belize City. Creole men, even after slavery, dominated positions in in logging crews, and even now dominate civil service. Garifuna The Garinagu came to Belize from the Bay Islands of Honduras on 19th November 1802. They are the result of the intermingling of African slaves, Carib and Arawak Indians.

The culture that makes up the country of Belize is diverse and rich, thanks to the countrys unique mix of ethnic variations. There are approximately 320,000 people living in Belize; they include Mestizo, Mayan, Anglo-European, Creole, Asian, Garifuna, Middle Eastern and Hispanic groups, with the Hispanics being the most prevalent. For this reason, visitors to Belize will hear a variety of different languages being spoken, with English being the primary language spoken followed by Spanish. The diversity of the culture of Belize is reflected in the wide array of culinary choices. The food in the country ranges from spicy to cool, and many of the dishes are savory and rich, made with local game that can be found ranging the plains and forests that cover the land. When you add to the local dishes those from neighboring Central American countries and international cuisine such as Chinese and Nigerian, you get a very large selection to choose from. Of course, there are American and European dishes for those who are not quite as adventurous when it comes to their food, as well as Belizean Indian recipes to try. The country is so ethnically diverse that it enjoys racial harmony as well as religious tolerance. Because of this, the country has developed a reputation for being welcoming and friendly, inviting visitors to its shores with open arms. Belize has a high concentration of native Indian races, such as the Yucatec Mayans who originated in the Yucatan and immigrated to Belize in the 1800s and the Mopan and the Kekchi, also part of the Mayan nation. Each has its own communities in the cities of Belize, but as mentioned above mingle seamlessly with the other nationalities found in the country.

Understanding And Uncovering The Belize Culture
The Belize culture is perhaps one of the most fascinating of all things in the country. Not only will you be able to see the various people and their ways of living when you retire here, but you can become part of it. First, realize that the country has more than one authentic culture. A wide range of people came and settled in the region adding to the Mayan culture that was already predominant. Other races you will find include Chinese, Mestizo, East Indian, Creole and Garifuna and in some areas Mennonite. Perhaps the largest focus of the country in terms of Belize culture is based on the Mayan culture. As you move throughout the country you will find many archaeological temples such as Caana a pyramid in the city of Caracol. One thing you will notice is that there is a widespread racial harmony for the various cultures that are found here. Additionally, many of these cultures have their own belief system and yet religious differences are tolerated. People are friendly here, and are less likely to point out those that are different in culture, race or religion. As you walk down the street do not be surprised if you are greeted as an old friend by a citizen even if you have never met them before. There is also an English element to the country, though minimal. This is due to the long term colonization of the British of the area. The official language of the country is English, though Spanish and Creole are also spoken.

      Belize Culture - Mestizo
Mestizo refers to the mixture of Spanish and Maya. They are immigrants who fled the ravages of war as as result of the Guerra de las Castas. The first group began to move into northern Belize around the 1850's. The northern refugees who settled in Corozal, Orange Walk, Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker were at first only Mestizoes but later were joined by many Maya immigrants. These were the people who developed agriculture, especiall sugar cane production on a large scale. Apart from language and cultural religious traditions such as the novena, posada, fiestas and los finados, the Mestizo culture was unique in its regard for close family ties with strict rules of courtship and marriage.Mestizo food is actually a mix of Maya and Spanish cuisine with corn playing a major role: tortillas, tamales, bollos, tamalitos, panades, garnachas along with other tasty foods such as relleno negro, chilmole, and escabeche. Another aspect of Mestizo culture is the fiesta Carnival presently being revived in Orange Walk district. Carnival season would be ushered in by a dance called "Los Mascarados". This dance involves a group of men in different disguises who would march through the streets dgragging chains. Some would be dressed like old men and women, while others masqueraded as witches, ghosts, demons, and others disguised themselves as priests in black cassocks with one man impersonating the devil. Other groups of 6 feet women would sometimes dress in Sunday satin all shiny, whole men sometimes stuck to simple white trousers, with white long-sleeved shirts, red neckerchiefs and sombreros.
