    Belize Culture - Maya
Maya Belizeans Include the Mopan, Kekchi and Yucatec. Some Maya have continuously lived in parts of Belize from ancient times. The Mopan Maya live mostly in the Toledo and WEstern Cayo district where they settled after fleeing rigid conditions including forced labor, military conscription and heavy taxes in Guatemala. Mopan and Yucatec Maya have both retained many traditions. Both, for example, maintain a strong respect for Maya gods particularly at planting and harvest time. Many of the traditional handcrafts, including the sewing and embroidery skills, beautifully displayed on Mopan Maya blouses, wall hangings, basket weaving, and calabash carving are once more being revived especially by the Toledo Craft and Pottery Association. The Kekchi Maya live in villages around San Antonio, in rural Toledo. Most Kekchi arrived in Toledo District around 1984, as refugees from the Vera Paz area of Guatemala. The Kekchi are largely self sufficient and carry on traditional subsistence farming based on the cultivation of corn, beans, rice, and pig rearing. The Kekchi speak their own dialect and govern themselves through the Alcalde system. Yucatec Maya refugees who migrated from Yucatan at the time of the Caste War live in the north and west of Belize. Yucatec Maya have been hispanicized being mostly Catholic and Spanish-speaking. The Yucatec Maya practiced intensive agriculture with sugar cane.

Belize People
Belize population is made up of diverse ethnic groups. Belize culture puts some light on the Belize people , who are a mixture of race, caste, religion, customs and traditions. The country is small and is inhabited by around 240,000 people. Therefore Belize can be termed as the conjuncture of diverse cultures, to form an unparalleled national heritage. The ethnic groups like Creoles, Mayans, East Indians, Arabs, Chinese, Garifunas and Mestizos together constitute the Belize people.
Ethnic Groups of Belize
Creoles constitute 40% of the Belize people. They are a mixture of the Africans and the Europeans who ruled this country for sometime. The Creoles speak English as it is the official language of the country. The Creole dialect rules the Belize city, which they mainly inhabit. Rice and beans is one of the dishes invented by the Creoles and is counted as one among the national specialties.
The Mayans form the third substantial ethnic group contributing to the Belize people. They are further categorized into Mopan, Yucatecan and the Kekchi Maya. They mainly reside in the districts of Orange Walk and Corozal.

Culture
The Maya built breathtaking temple complexes aligned to the movement of celestial bodies. Although they remained technically a Stone Age culture, they also developed sophisticated mathematics, astronomy and calendars. The Spanish constructed some plain stone churches, but the modern architecture is predominantly British Caribbean in style.
Belize is officially English-speaking, but the creoles (the largest ethnic group) speak their own colorful dialect as well as standard English. Spanish is the main language in the north and some towns in the west. You may also hear Mayan, Chinese, Mennonite German, Lebanese, Arabic, Hindi and Garfuna (the language of the Garinagu people of Stann Creek district) being spoken.
The majority of Belize's population are Roman Catholics, but British influence has created a sizable and varied protestant congregation, including German Swiss Mennonites. The Mayan practice of Catholicism is a fascinating fusion of shamanist-animist and Christian ritual.
Belize has never really developed a national cuisine. Its cooking borrows elements from the UK, the USA, Mexico and the Caribbean. The traditional staples are rice and beans. These are often eaten with chicken, pork, beef, fish or vegetables. Coconut milk and fried plaintain add a tropical flavor. Exotic traditional foods include armadillo, venison and fried paca, a controversial brow n-spotted rodent (similar to a guinea pig) that conservationist-gourmets won't touch with a ten foot cassava.

CONDUCT AND CUSTOMS Concept of Time
Like many other Central American and Caribbean cultures, the Belizean clock is not quite as rigidly precise as it is in other parts of the world. "Nine o'clock a.m." is not necessarily a moment in time that occurs once a morning, as it is in the United States or Europe; rather, it is a general guideline that could extend an hour or two in either direction (usually later). The Creoles say "Time longa den da roop" ("time is longer than the rope"), which means the same as the Spanish, "Hay mas tiempo que vida" ("there is more time than there is life")-both of which boil down to the unofficial motto of Caye Caulker: "Go slow!" A great deal of patience is required of the traveler who wishes to adapt to this looser concept of time. Buses generally leave when they are scheduled, but may stop for frustratingly long breaks during the journey. Don't use Belize Time as an excuse to be late for your tour bus pickup, but don't get angry when your taxi driver stops to briefly chat and laugh with a friend. THE ARTS
In 2003, the Government of Belize created the National Institute for Culture and History (NICH, www.nichbelize.org), to bring together diverse government departments which had historically worked to preserve and promote different aspects of Belizean culture, from painting and music to archaeology. It falls under Belize's Ministry of Culture and Tourism and encompasses The Institute for the Creative Arts (ICA), which is responsible for the promotion of the performing, plastic, and visual arts. The ICA is headquartered at the newly renovated Bliss Center for the Creative Arts and is headed by musical artist Andy Palacio.
