A Brief History of Belize
HISTORY
The country of Belize was first inhabited by the Maya Indians who had an incredibly advanced civilization. They had their own writing called glyphs and their own calendar. The Mayas were also skilled mathematicians. They were the first culture to discover the concept of zero. They were also great architects. They built massive temples, cities, and palaces. The cities were well-planned and the temples were shaped like pyramids. Tikal, located in Guatemala, was the largest Maya city ever built and included five pyramids. The Mayas were also skilled astronomers. They studied the stars and learned to tell when the rainy season would come.
The great Mayan civilization, which had lasted 1,000 years, began to decline around the year of 900 A.D. It is unknown why the Mayan civilization ended, but there are many theories. One is that the population of the Mayas grew too great. With a lack of food and possible internal fighting, the civilization fell apart.
There followed a period of occupation by Indian tribes, then 100 years of Belize being the hideout for pirates. These pirates took advantage of the many Cayes of the coast of Belize. Then around 1650, these pirates started to log the mahogany and logwood forests of Belize. These loggers came to be known as baymen. The pirates used the labor of black slaves to log the wood and then sent it to England.

    THE ANCIENT MAYA
The ancient city of Cahal Pech In the the sixteenth century, the Spaniards disembarked on this sacred Mayan territory. In contrast to their knowledge of the developed civilizations encountered in North Mexico and Peru, the Spaniards saw the Maya as disorganized. Their search for treasures in this newly discovered area now appeared easier than they had anticipated, and the Spanish conquest shattered what was left of the ancient Maya culture. In their journey to colonize the lands of La Ruta Maya, Christianity was spread. Hundreds of friars were brought along and scattered throughout the area to convert as many of the "uncivilized" Maya people as possible. COLONIALISM Supreme Court Building With great fortunes being made from the forests of Belize, the dangerous life of the Baymen soon brought about great apprehension in the camps. Apart from worrying about poisonous snakes, deadly tropical diseases and the discomfort of working amongst clouds of mosquitoes, there was the predominant threat of the Spanish raids of the timber camps, which occurred throughout the seventeenth century.

Perhaps as early as 35,000 years ago, nomadic people came from Asia to the Americas across the frozen Bering Strait. In the course of many millennia, their descendants settled in and adapted to different environments, creating many cultures in North America, Central America, and South America. The Mayan culture emerged in the lowland area of the Yucatán Peninsula and the highlands to the south, in what is now southeastern Mexico, Guatemala, western Honduras, and Belize. Many aspects of this culture persist in the area despite nearly half a millennium of European domination. All evidence, whether from archaeology, history, ethnography, or linguistic studies, points to a cultural continuity in this region. The descendants of the first settlers in the area have lived there for at least three millennia. Prior to about 2500 B.C., some hunting and foraging bands settled in small farming villages. While hunting and foraging continued to play a part in their subsistence, these farmers domesticated crops such as corn, beans, squash, and chili peppers which are still the basic foods in Central America. A profusion of languages and subcultures developed within the Mayan core culture. Between about 2500 B.C. and A.D. 250, the basic institutions of Mayan civilization emerged. The peak of this civilization occurred during the classic period, which began about A.D. 250 and ended about 700 years later.

      Belize History
The origin of the name Belize is relatively unclear, but one theory is that it derives from the Spanish pronunciation of the surname of the pirate who created the first settlement in Belize in 1638, Peter Wallace. Another possibility is that the name is from the Maya word belix, meaning "muddy water", referring to the Belize River. Initially the Baymen cut logwood, a dyewood greatly valued in Europe as the principal dyestuff for the expanding woolen industry. By the 1770s, a second tropical exotic timber, mahogany, replaced logwood as the main export from Belize. The economy of Belize was primarily based on the extraction and exporting of mahogany until the early 1900s, when the cultivation of export crops such as citrus, sugar cane, and bananas came to dominate the economy. To this day, Belize produces mahogany, as well as many other exotic woods, which are used to build exquisite furniture and homes in Belize. Mahogany is still readily available and reasonably priced within Belize.
The early "settlement of Belize in the Bay of Honduras" grew from a few habitations located at Belize Town and St George's Caye into a de-facto colony of the United Kingdom during the late eighteenth century. In the early nineteenth century the settlement was called British Honduras, and in 1871 it became a Crown Colony.

    History of Belize
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The history of Belize dates back thousands of years. The Maya civilization spread into the area of Belize between 1500 BC and AD 200 and flourished until about AD 1200. Several major archeological sites—notably Cahal Pech Caracol Lamanai Lubaantun ... Altun Ha , and Xunantunich —reflect the advanced civilization and much denser population of that period. The first recorded European settlement was established by shipwrecked English seamen in 1638. Over the next 150 years, more English settlements were established. This period also was marked by piracy, indiscriminate logging, and sporadic attacks by pre-America natives and neighboring Spanish settlements. Great Britain first sent an official representative to the area in the late 18th century, but Belize was not formally termed the " Colony of British Honduras " until 1840. It became a crown colony in 1862. Subsequently, several constitutional changes were enacted to expand representative government. Full internal self-government under a ministerial system was granted in January 1964. The official name of the territory was changed from British Honduras to Belize in June 1973, and full independence was granted on September 21, 1981.

Glyphs Timeline The Future The exciting prehistory of Mesoamerica is just coming to light in the past few years. Beginning with the Spanish conquest, we have a record of Mesoamerica and the Mayan Empire for the past five hundred years. Today, thanks to recent discoveries in the interpretation of the Mayan written language, we are beginning to scratch the surface of three thousand years of history. Many Mayan ruins that have been archeologically explored and excavated have not yet had their glyphs translated. The few that have reveal a world of pre Spanish city states that warred with each other for several thousand years. Many ruins exist in the jungles of Belize, the Yucatan Peninsula and the Peten, which until today have not yet been excavated to reveal their history. many more ruins are yet to be found. The city states of Mesoamerica rivaled, and probably surpassed, the social organization and development of Medieval cities in Europe.
This is an exciting time for archeology and anthropology students, because the history of the early Maya civilization is yet to be filled in by field studies. Now that the written language is being deciphered, we will in future years be able to compile a history going back in some cases for four thousand years, long before the time of Christ.

The lagoons are to the western (leeward) side of the island. The Barrier Reef lies about a half mile to the east of the island, running the entire length, the reef and the land touching at the northeast of the island at Rocky Point. The sand reaches a height of three to five feet above sea level, to a maximum of 10 feet at San Pedro Town.

    Belize History
Left: Mask at Lamanai Maya Ruin in northern Belize. Hundreds of ruins and ceremonial centers show that for thousands of years Belize was populated by the Maya Civilization that reached its peak known as the Classic Period between A.D. 250 and 900. At its height, the Maya of Belize and Central America formed one of the most densely populated and culturally dynamic societies in the world. Eventually the civilization declined leaving behind large groups whose offspring still exist in Belize. In 1502, Columbus sailed through parts of the Caribbean, but apparently did not actually visit the area later known as British Honduras. The first European to make Belize his home was Gonzalo Guerrero , a sailor from Palos, in Spain who shipwrecked along the Yucatan Peninsula in 1511 and was captured by the Maya and later married and settled at Chactemal now modern day Corozal Town in northern Belize. The first reference to an informal European settlement in the colony was in 1638 when Belize was used a hiding place by pirates from Scotland and England. The population grew with the addition of disbanded British soldiers and sailors after the capture of Jamaica from Spain in 1655. The settlement, whose main activity was logwood cutting (logwood was used in the past to produce dye), had a troubled history during the next 150 years. It was subjected to numerous incursions from neighbouring Spanish settlements (Spain claimed sovereignty over the entire New World except for regions in South America assigned to Portugal).
