History The first inhabitants of Belize were the Maya and Caribe Indians. Belize was a part of the great Mayan empire which stretched through Guatemala, southern Mexico and parts of Honduras and El Salvador. Though the history of the Maya can be traced back for over 4000 years, the Classic period of more advanced Mayan civilization began around the 3 rd century AD and reached its height between the 6 th and 8 th centuries. By the 14 th century it was in serious decline. When the Spanish arrived in the 16 th century, many of the Mayan cities were deserted. The Spanish th century. When piracy became passé, many of the pirates began working in the logging trade. Belize was British by tradition and sympathy by the time that a British force routed the Spanish armada off St George's Caye in 1798, delivering Belize from Spanish rule. In 1862, Great Britain declared Belize to be the colony of

History and Culture of Belize
History The first inhabitants in what is now Belize who developed a succinct culture were the Maya. Belize was an important part in the great Mayan Empire. The Maya Empire was possibly the most sophisticated civilization in the ancient Americas. Including modern day southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras, the Mayas reached their peak in the 6th, 7th, and 8th centuries AD. However, by the 14TH Century this once great civilization mysteriously declined. By the time the Spanish arrived in the 16TH Century, Maya presence was barely felt. Even though the Spanish ruled Belize since their arrival in the new world, they were never able to truly control the area. For them, Belize was a backwater, good only for cutting dye wood. This lack of control eventually allowed for pirates from England and Scotland to come in and find sanctuary during the 17th century. When pirating became a less popular profession, these former buccaneers turned to cutting log wood in the rich tropical forests of Belize. From the outset of Colonization, Belize's roots were more British than Spanish. Britain gained full control from Spain in 1798, when they defeated the Spanish Armada off St. George's Caye. While the United States was embroiled in Civil War, Great Britain declared Belize to be the colony of British Honduras, against the terms of the Monroe Doctrine.

Belize History
Archaeologists have determined that the Maya settled in Belize as early as 1500 BC. Their civilization reached its height between AD 250 and 900 - descendants of the Maya continue to live in Belize today. The Spanish claimed Central America along with the rest of their New World possessions, but they didn't settle the area that would become Belize . The first sustained European presence came instead from British buccaneers and shipwrecked British sailors, who soon realized that Belize 's forests of mahogany were a valuable commodity. Slaves were brought in to harvest the timber, and the Baymen - as the British settlers were known - began to extract a tidy profit from the jungle. Spain continued to claim the area, however, and the decisive battle between the Spanish and British was fought September 10 1798 , off St. George's Caye. The British won and continued to rule the area despite advances by Mexico and Guatemala in the 1820s. The settlement became known as British Honduras , though it wasn't until 1862 that it officially became a British colony. In 1973 the name was changed to Belize , and on 21 September 1981 , the country declared its independence from Britain .

Belize is a central American country yet is still considered to form part of the Caribbean. Like many other parts of the Caribbean, Belize has Elizabeth II as its official monarch and English as it's official language. There are many other languages spoken in Belize and this has its huge diversity and the Belize history to thank for this.
      Belize History: Early Inhabitants
The first civilization in Belize was the Maya civilization that inhabited the country as far back as 1000 B.C. There is evidence that this was a civilization adept in farming. This civilization lasted until the Spanish explorers turned up and they certainly found their differences with the Spanish. In an almost allergic reaction, the indigenous people were affected by diseases caught by the Spanish and their resistance thus faltered. They were left weakened and the Spanish eventually conquered Belize. The Spanish quickly established churches and had the intention of controlling Belize. Although there were a great number of attempts to unsettle the Spanish from pirates and natives, their control was fully restored in 1707. All this fuss was certainly noticeable and the British became interested in the area for themselves.

Contact Belize history began with the Mayans. The Mayan civilization spread into the area of Belize between 1500 BC and AD 300 and flourished until about AD 1200. Several major archeological sitesnotably Caracol, Lamanai, Lubaantun, Altun Ha, and Xunantunichreflect the advanced civilization and much denser population of that period. European contact began in 1502 when Christopher Columbus sailed along the coast. The first recorded European settlement was established by shipwrecked English seamen in 1638. Over the next 150 years, more English settlements were established. This period also was marked by piracy, indiscriminate logging, and sporadic attacks by Indians and neighboring Spanish settlements. Great Britain first sent an official representative to the area in the late 18th century, but Belize was not formally termed the "Colony of British Honduras" until 1840. It became a crown colony in 1862. Subsequently, several constitutional changes were enacted to expand representative government. Full internal self-government under a ministerial system was granted in January 1964. The official name of the territory was changed from British Honduras to Belize in June 1973, and full independence was granted on September 21, 1981. Belize is a parliamentary democracy based on the Westminster model and is a member of the Commonwealth. Queen Elizabeth II is head of state and is represented in the country by Governor General Dr. Colville N. Young, Sr., a Belizean and Belize's second governor general. The primary executive organ of government is the cabinet, led by a prime minister (head of government). Cabinet ministers are members of the majority political party in parliament and usually hold elected seats in the National Assembly concurrently with their cabinet positions.
