What's This? sacred image by darkages from Fotolia.com Bereavement and grief counseling have a relationship but refer to two different aspects of the loss experience, usually loss through the death of someone else. Grief is a process that is associated with bereavement; grief counseling comes into play in specific circumstances involved with these loss responses.
Grief Counseling
  • Grief counseling involves a type of therapy with the goal of assisting people who have sustained a loss to work through the resulting emotional effects of that loss in a normal, healthy way, as detailed on the website minddisorders.com. Most people work through grief naturally on their own over a period of time, but some have responses that require or at least would benefit from professional attention.
  • Bereavement
  • Bereavement refers to a post-loss state of loneliness and sadness. It is related to but separate from grief, which describes the linked set of behaviors and feelings connected with such a loss. Typically, the triggering event for these emotional states involves loss by way of the death of another closely affiliated person such as friend or

Grief is often a confusing and flightening experience for those who have lost a loved one.  Preconceived ideas and unrealistic expectations can complicate the process. We often think it should be easier or over sooner than is realistic. Many people experiencing grief for the first time think they are going crazy. It can be made more difficult by well meaning friends who often contribute to the anguish with innocent words, which while meant to be helpfiil, actually hurt deeply, or even worse, silence.

February 4th, 2009 Worth Kilcrease No comments Welcome back to another posting of In Due Course . Today, I want to continue our discussion about dying by addressing five "themes" for caring for someone who is dying and some practical suggestions on how to do carryout those themes. You can think of these themes, taken from a publication of the Colorado Collaboration on End-of-Life Care, as the five R’s for caring: R emember, R ecognize, R espect, R einforce, and R eminisce. Bereavement, grief and loss
Losing someone close to you is one of the most profound experiences you may go through. It can be a confusing time whether the death was expected or not and can bring a variety of conflicting emotions and physical reactions.
How do we react to loss?
In the early days following the loss there may be feelings of denial and shock , "I cannot believe it", or numbness ,"I do not feel anything". Some people feel as though they are losing control . These are natural reactions. As time progresses these may be replaced by feelings of sadness, anger and confusion , "Why did this have to happen?" Many people 'see' or 'hear' the person which can feel frightening but is a common response. Mood swings can be experienced. One minute you may feel fine, the next you may burst into tears or feel angry. Sleep, appetite and concentration can all be affected.
Is there a correct way to grieve?
