Bereavement / Grief
Have you lost a loved one recently?
Do you find yourself depressed and unable to carry out daily activities?
Do you obsess and ruminate over the departed?
Have you experienced a loss for which you had an abbreviated or no opportunity to grieve?

Grief is a natural and necessary process that anyone who lost a loved one goes through. How grief is handled determines how well someone will do in the long run. In our society, where we too often hear "It's time for you to move on," or "It's time you started to live again," grief is not given its due and people often feel ashamed that they are not "over" their grief at the same speed as others would like them to be.
In individual therapy you will learn:
1. What you learned from your family about how to deal with death and dying
2. The Four Tasks of grieving 3. Specific skills and actions that will help you to go through the grief process

          Grief and Loss
Many Forms of Bereavement and Grief
Bereavement stages and the stages of grief are viewed as very similar, but in grief counseling For example, losing a pet and mourning the loss of a child are two completely different situations, yet both can cause severe episodes of grief. Grief is very natural when someone experiences loss of any kind. Losing a job, a relationship, or even a treasured keepsake can stir up grief, and each form of grief should be taken seriously and demands support and attention.
How Does Bereavement Differ From Grief?
Bereavement is the state of grief brought on by a loss due to death. Keep in mind that, in most cases, healing from grief can be much easier to cope with since grief sufferers are not faced with the finality of dying. Their recovery may include learning to live without some type of relationship. However, most experts will tell you that in most cases what is lost can usually be forgotten, found, or even replaced over time. For example, grieving due to the loss of a job might end suddenly if a better job turns is soon to follow. Or someone who is grieving over a lost romantic relationship could be reduced or even eliminated from being able to meet someone else.

Perinatal Bereavement Grief Scale
Distinguishing Grief From Depression Following Miscarriage
  • Jennifer Boyd Ritsher
  • Department of Veterans Affairs and Stanford University Richard Neugebauer
  • New York State Psychiatric Institute and Columbia University
  • Abstract
The study evaluated the Perinatal Bereavement Grief Scale (PBGS), the first scale designed to measure grief following reproductive loss in terms of yearning for the lost pregnancy and lost baby. Participants included 304 women interviewed by telephone 1 to 3 times within 6 months after miscarriage. The PBGS had high internal consistency and test-retest reliability. It showed convergent validity with measures of attachment and investment in the child and divergent validity against measures of social desirability and depressive symptoms, supporting the conceptual distinction between grief and depression. Cross-cultural validity was acceptable whether tested by language (Spanish vs. English) or ethnicity (Hispanic vs. other). This measure of yearning enables study of the epidemiology and prognostic value of this key feature of mourning.
