Bhutan's culture is the only highlight of this small and less developed country. Bhutan has three main ethnic groups: the Sharchop in the east, which originated from the tribes of northern Burma and northeast India; the Ngalops in the west, who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan after migrating from Tibet; and the Lhotsampas in the south, originally belonging to Nepal. Bhutan has a population of around 700,000. Thimpu, the capital of Bhutan is one of the large towns in Bhutan. The major profession of the people of Bhutan is farming, who live in small rural villages. These villages are secluded and is accessible only by foot. But now, as the people are getting educated, they are migrating to towns in search of other occupations. Dzongkha is the official language of Bhutan, but many regions in Bhutan still retain their native dialects due to their isolation. As people are receiving education, especially those in urban areas, are getting more familiar with the English language, which is also the medium of instruction in Bhutan.

Bhutanese are physically similar to the Tibetans but history does not record when they crossed over the Himalayas and settled in the south-draining valleys of Bhutan. The Kingdom of Bhutan landlocked nation in the Himalaya Mountains , sandwiched between India and the People's Republic of China in South Asia . The local name for the country is Druk Yul. It is also called Druk Tsendhen (land of the thunder dragon ), because the thunder there is said to be the sound of roaring dragon s. Historically Bhutan was known by many names, such as Lho Mon (southern land of darkness), Lho Tsendenjong (southern land of the cypress ), and Lhomen Khazhi (southern land of four approaches). The origins of the name Bhutan are unclear; historians have suggested that it may have originated in variations of the Sanskrit words as a name for the country dates from the late 19th century

Identification. B.C.E. The society of Bhutan today is made up of several ethnic groups. The Sharchops, who are believed to be ancestors of those earliest residents, live mostly in eastern Bhutan. Their early ancestor tribes may have originated from Burma (Myanmar) and northeast India. It is also believed that Indo-Mongoloids (usually referred to as Monpas, which means non-Tibetans) migrated into Bhutan two thousand years ago from Arunchal Pradesh, Nagaland, northern Burma, and Thailand. The Ngalops live in western Bhutan and migrated from the Tibetan plains; they are credited with being the first to bring Buddhism to the country. The other main ethnic group is the Lhotshampas, who were from Nepal originally. The Lhotshampas migrated to Bhutan toward the end of the nineteenth century. Location and Geography.

CULTURE Bhutanese houses are built of timber and stone and have thick, pounded mud walls to keep out the cold. Most such houses have two stories: livestock are kept on the ground floor, while the family lives above. Inside the house a family will usually have a shrine consisting of a small Buddhist image in a corner. While the Bhutia family system is basically patriarchal, family estates are divided equally between sons and daughters. Both men and women are free to choose whom to marry, and members of both sexes can initiate a divorce. Ordinary Bhutia villagers may not be able to afford meat in their daily meals and often must rely on a dish of rice, potatoes, and chilies. Besides meat, the yak also supplies milk, from which butter is made for use in lamps on the shrine altar.

Bhutan : Culture
Bhutan's traditional society has been defined as both patriarchal and matriarchal, and the member held in highest esteem served as the family's head. Bhutan also has been described as feudalistic and characterized by the absence of strong social stratification. In premodern times, there were three broad classes: the monastic community, the leadership of which was the nobility; lay civil servants who ran the government apparatus; and farmers, the largest class, living in self-sufficient villages. Social status is based on a family's economic base. Exclude among the Hindu Nepalese in southern Bhutan, there was no caste system. Although Bhutanese were endogamous by tradition, modern practices and even royal decrees promoted ethnic integration in the late twentieth century. Primogeniture dictated the right of inheritance traditionally, although in some central areas the eldest daughter was the lawful successor. In contemporary Bhutan, inheritance came to be more equally distributed among all children of a family. orthodox clothing still was commonly worn in the early 1990s, and, indeed, its use was fostered by government decree. Women wore the kira, an ankle-length dress made of a rectangular piece of cloth held at the shoulders with a clip and closed with a woven belt at the waist, over a long-sleeved blouse. Social status was suggested by the amount of decorative details and colors of the kira and the quality of the cloth used. Men wore the gho, a wraparound, coatlike, knee-length garment, with a narrow belt.

Travel Tips Architecture of Bhutan Culture and Traditions Text and Photographs by Robert Dompnier The main features of Bhutanese architecture are the result primarily of natural conditions, and especially the climate. In the countries situated to the north of the Himalayan range, such as Tibet or Ladakh, the long severe winters and cold continental winds have produced an arid landscape with only sparse vegetation. In contrast, those to the south, such as Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan, have much milder climates with abundant rainfall, especially during the summer monsoon. This particular climate has produced Alpine-type vegetation, with forests containing many species of trees such as oak, rhododendron, cypress, juniper, pine and fir.... Naturally, this plentiful supply of timber has given birth to an architecture in which wood plays a major role. Shingle roofs and half-timbering are commonplace, as the raw materials are easy to find. But in addition to the climate and environment, a human factor must also be stressed, and that is that the minds of the Bhutanese people seem to have been influenced by their friendlier surroundings to create a gentler and more elegant architecture than in Tibet.

Houses each fly a small white flag on the roof indicating the owner has made his offering payments to appease the local god. Each valley or district is dominated by a huge dzong, or high-walled fortresses, which serves the religious and administrative center of the district.
