The Bhutanese culture is one of the oldest, most carefully guarded and well preserved cultures in the world. For the people of Bhutan realize that other than their centuries old culture and revered values, there is little else that is exclusive to their small and less developed country. In a bid to prevent their ancient customs from being influenced by the West, the Bhutanese government has made it mandatory for all Bhutanese to wear only their national dress in public.

Bhutan Culture
The uniqueness of Bhutan’s culture has been the bedrock of her identity. Though small in size and population, Bhutan has culture deeply rooted in the values and principles of Buddhism.
Reflecting ‘unity in diversity’ people of 18 different ethnicities live in harmony with strong sense of oneness. Bhutan’s culture is uniquely evolved and time-tested. To provide hospitality to strangers is one of the core social values. Care for strangers and neighbors during the time of adversity like death of a family member is a living fact of a strong caring culture. The traditional festivals are centuries-old and still vibrant. Mask dances are the mainstay of various festivals held round the year in different parts of the country. Mask dances include naked dances performed at the festivals to ward off evil spirits. So the festivals, too, are rich in myth, legends and beliefs. Bhutan’s uniqueness in her dress code is one important aspect of the culture that has the potential to keep the history living and reliving. The national dress is called gho (for men) and kira (for women).

Ensconced comfortably in the eastern Himalayas, Bhutan is widely referred to as the 'abode of gods' not only because its surrounding exude a heavenly quality, but also because of the religious and spiritual zenith, that is comfortably attained here by souls in search of peace. Though small in its total area and bordered by the huge countries of India and China, Bhutan and its people have constantly persevered to retain there own distinct identity, and have emerged immensely successful in carving a niche reputation for themselves throughout the world.
People of Bhutan
The people of Bhutan owe their uniqueness and individuality depending upon the area in which they reside. Till date, Bhutanese live in valleys separated by formidable mountain passes and remain practically oblivious of what is sweeping the world outside their country. The total population of the Bhutanese Kingdom can be divided into three ethnic groups - the Nepalese farmer group who were responsible for bringing Hinduism to Bhutan occupy most of the southern region; the Drukpa people trace their origin from the Mongols and inhabit the central region; the Sharchops belong to the Indo Mongolian category and occupy the eastern region of the country.

Imagine not being able to recognize your husband, your mother, your co-workers.  For author Heather Sellers, that's everyday life: She suffers from an inability to recognize faces. In her new memoir, Sellers writes about coming to terms with the disorder, but not until she was in her 30s.

Thus using the annual increase rate of 2–3%, the most population estimates were around 2 million in the year 2000. A national census was carried out in 2005 and it turned out that the population was 672,425. Bhutan Culture
Bhutan is undoubtedly the last country that opened its windows to the outside world. In order to preserve its cultural heritage, Bhutan has always been very isolated. Because of this isolation Bhutan has successfully preserved a culture that dates back to the 17th century. The languages spoken in Bhutan, Dzongkha and Sharchop, are directly related to Tibetan. Bhutanese and Tibetan are very similar in nature and it is not known when they crossed the Himalayas to settle in the valleys of Bhutan. Just as in Tibet, daily life is centered around the practice of Tantric Buddhism. Both revere the guru Padmasambhava, the founder of Himalayan Buddhism in the 8th century. Driglam Namzha, the national dress code, has to be observed while in public. Women are dressed in colourful blouses over which they fold and clasp a large rectangular cloth, the so called kira. Sometimes a toego, a short silk jacked, is worn above the kira. Men will usually wear a gho, a heavy knee-length robe tied with a belt. The gho gets folded in such a way that it forms a pocket in front of the belly. For everyday use the clothes are made from wool or cotton. For special occasions, colourfully patterned silk is used. In Bhutanese society women traditionally had more rights than men. They had the right to own land. Inheritance passes on to a sister, daughter or niece. This type of inheritance is called matrilinearity. Men and women mostly work together in the field or in the household.

History in Bhutan
Edit This His Majesty The King of Bhutan Yangcho It is believed the country got the name 'Bhutan' from the Sanskrit word 'Bhu-Uttan' which means 'High Land'. Another theory says that it comes from the Sanskrit word 'Bhots-ant' meaning 'end of Tibet or south of Tibet'. However, to the Bhutanese themselves, their country is known as "Druk Yul" and its inhabitants as 'Drukpa'. In Bhutanese language, Druk means dragon and 'Druk-Yul' means 'the land of the Dragon'. This is because when the sect of Buddhism, which was later to become the dominant religion in Bhutan was first initiated at the Ralung monastery in Tibet, 'a loud roar of the thunder dragon' was heard echoing to the south. This was taken as an auspicious sign that the sect would fluorish in the south of Tibet, where Bhutan is, and the sect was named as the 'Drukpa sect'. The country where this sect later flourished was henceforth known as 'Druk-yul'. To this day, the state religion of Bhutan is 'Drukpa Kargyud' although other sects are almost equally popular and tolerated. One thing that all Bhutanese are proud of is that Bhutan was never colonised. Despite many wars with Tibet, and some rough encounters with the British, Bhutan always managed to remain independent.
