BHUTAN : GEOGRAPHY The Kingdom lies east of Nepal and west of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. It is the south of the Tibetan hinterland and the north of the Indian territories of Assam and West Bengal. Located in the Heart of the Himalayan mountain range, Bhutan is a land – locked country surrounded by mountains in the north and west. The rugged east, visited by few Western travelers, borders the spare and largely unknown Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. The high Himalaya in the northern steppes separates the kingdom from Tibet. The population of 600,000 is made up primarily of indigenous Bhutanese. Many naturalized citizens came originally from Tibet and India. In the higher reaches in the Kingdom an in some isolated valleys, hill tribes assuming Bhutanese nationality thrive on the land. Some, like those from Merek and Sakteng in the east and Laya on the north, have no contact with Western civilization and trade only in bartered goods.
The lower southern regions are inhabited by migrant Nepalese who have been granted Bhutanese nationality. Most of them are agricultural workers who take advantage of the fertile southern land. Most industrial areas are also located in south. The southern districts are less than central; districts abut more populated than northern mountains regions.

Historically Bhutan was known by many names, such as Lho Mon (southern land of darkness), Lho Tsendenjong (southern land of the cypress ), and Lhomen Khazhi (southern land of four approaches). Under British influence, a monarchy was set up in 1907; three years later, a treaty was signed whereby the British agreed not to interfere in Bhutanese internal affairs and Bhutan allowed Britain to direct its foreign affairs. This role was assumed by independent India after 1947. Two years later, a formal Indo-Bhutanese accord returned the areas of Bhutan annexed by the British, formalized the annual subsidies the country received, and defined India's responsibilities in defense and foreign relations. Bhutan - Geographical Information
    Location
The kingdom of Bhutan lies in the eastern Himalayas, between Tibet to the north, and the Indian territories of Assam and West Bengal to the south, Arunachal Pradesh to the east and Sikkim to the west. The kingdom has a total area of about 47,000 square kilometers and spreads between meridians 89°E and 93°E, and latitudes 27°N and 29°N.
    Physical Features
Located in the heart of the high Himalayan mountain range, Bhutan is a landlocked country surrounded by mountains. The sparsely populated Greater Himalayas, bounded to the north by the Tibetan plateau, reach heights of over 7,300 m, and extend southward losing height, to form the fertile valleys of the Lesser Himalayas that are divided by the Wang, Sunkosh, Trongsa and Manas rivers. The entire country is virtually mountainous, the 7554-m Kulha Gangri on the Tibetan border being the highest. North to south, Bhutan features three geographic regions, namely, the high Himalayas of the north, the hills and valleys of the interior, and the foothills and plains of the south. Its great rivers helped to carve its topography and their enormous potential for hydropower has helped shape the economy. Monsoon influences promote dense forestation in this region and alpine growth at higher altitudes. The cultivated central uplands and Himalayan foothills support the majority of the population. In the south, the Daurs Plain drops sharply away from the Himalayas into the large tracts of semi-tropical forest, savannah grassland and bamboo jungle. Forests and woodlands cover 70% of Bhutan’s total area.

    Bhutan Geography and Environment
The climate varies from region to region. The southern plains enjoy a tropical climate, while the polar type of climate is the characteristic of the northern region. The central region has cool winters and hot summers. There are four distinct season in the country - spring, summer, autumn and winter. Spring which is considered the most beautiful and pleasant season extends from end of February to end of May. Summers begin from the end of June and extend upto the end of August. Somewhere in between monsoons take over and rains wet the entire country till September. Lastly Autumn covers the months of October and November, while winters start from December and end in February.
Around 70% of the land area of Bhutan is covered with forests with a major portion of it brought under National Parks and wildlife sanctuaries. The residents of these national parks are 770 species of birds out of which 15 are in the list of endangered species; 165 mammals including 24 protected wild animal species and 7000 species of vascular plants including 152 medicinal plants. The birds and animals of Bhutan have a special significance in the lives of the people not only because they play an essential role in preserving the ecological balance, but also because they have a symbolic value attached to them. Tiger, snow leopard, mythical eagle and thunder dragon are regarded as the Four Power Animals that represent mind, strength, wisdom and voice of great renown in body form. Similarly, "Four Friends" (a bird, a rabbit, a monkey and an elephant) are representatives of cooperation.
