BHUTAN—HISTORY
In Bhutan, history is simultaneously religious and political. For example, the native name of the country, Druk yul, is derived from the name of the Drukpa Buddhist sect. Even now the administrative center (dzong) of each district functions as both a monastery and secular governor's seat. The head abbot of the Drukpa sect resides in the main dzong, in the capital, which is also the seat of the national government and enjoys parity of esteem with the king. Bhutan's history was linked to that of Tibet— in which, however, it was never politically included— until the powerful Buddhist Gelug sect of Tibet, founders of the Dalai Lama rulership in the seventeenth century, tried to invade Bhutan several times in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. They were repulsed and after a treaty in 1734 Bhutan's focus turned southward. The Chinese takeover of Tibet and the 1959 flight of the Dalai Lama finally ended official relations with Tibet. Thus while the study of ancient Bhutan is part of Tibetology, contemporary Bhutan belongs to South Asia. Read all of this article with a FREE trial

BHUTAN :: history The name Bhutan appears to derive from an ancient Indian term, Bhotana, which means the end of the land of the Bhots (Tibet). The Bhutanese themselves refer to their country as Druk Yul or the land of the Thunder Dragon. Druk means dragon and comes from the Drukpa school of Tibetan Buddhism, which is predominant in the Kingdom. Bhutan’s history parallels Buddhism’s spread in the Himalayas, and to properly understand Bhutan’s history one also needs to understand the region in which it is located.
Mystery surrounds Bhutan’s distant past, as books and paper were lost in fires at the national printing works and at Punakha Dzong in 1828 and 1832. A massive earthquake in 1896 and a fire in Paro Dzong destroyed all but a few of the remaining records.
Bhutan was not unified under a central authority until the 17th century, although the Buddhist religion in the country had provided some sort of cohesion during the middle ages. It was in 747 AD that Padma Sambhava, who is known as Guru Rimpoche, made his legendary trip from Tibet across the mountains, flying on a tigress’s back. He arrived in the Paro valley at Taktsang Monastery (often called Tiger’s Nest in English). A fire burned this monastery to the ground in 1998, but it has since been rebuilt and is now more easily accessible than before. Guru Rimpoche is not only recognized as the founder of the Nyingmapa school of Tibetan Buddhism, but he is also considered in the region to be the second Buddha.

Bhutan History in Dzongkha or English?
Much of the current discussions among teachers in Bhutanese middle secondary schools revolves around whether Bhutan history should continue to be taught in Dzongkha or should it revert to being taught in English as in the past. The education ministry translated the Class 7 Bhutan History textbook from English to Dzongkha so that it could be taught to the students from the 2006 academic session. The year after that, it did the same with the Class 8 history textbook. The rationale was to promote and improve the national language and raise it to the level of English. During this week’s pre-education conference in Thimphu, teachers, particularly from the capital, suggested that Bhutan History should be taught in English instead of Dzongkha. They said Bhutanese teachers, especially those trained in English, were not confident with teaching history in Dzongkha. There was also a shortage of Dzongkha lopens in the country, who were specifically trained to teach the language. A Mongar history teacher, Pelden Zangmo, agreed that she was not confident enough to teach the subject in Dzongkha and therefore gave the subject to a Dzongkha language teacher. But they have an understanding between them. “I have years of experience in teaching history, so the Dzongkha language teacher and I would sit together, discuss lessons and prepare exam questions together, she said.
