zSB(3,3) History of the Biathlon The Olympic Biathlon, as its name suggests, consists of two sports - and they are cross-country snow skiing and rifle shooting. It's generally accepted that this sport originated in Scandinavia, developing from the activities of hunters who used skis to negotiate snowy winter woods while carrying rifles with which to shoot their game. Skiing and rifles have also been combined for military use, as ski-wearing troops can negotiate terrain that vehicles (or folks on foot) cannot. As often happens when athletes get together, competition arose regarding who was the fastest skier and/or the most accurate rifleman, and formal events were arranged to decide these matters. Precursors to modern biathlon events were staged in 1776 in Norway. The year 1912 marked the first skiing/riflery event that we'd recognize alongside the modern Olympic event. The first standardized rules for biathlon came in 1948 with the founding of Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon (UIPMB), and by 1998 such rules became the purview of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) when it split from the UIPMB.

    About Biathlon
Description and history of Biathlon - how the sport evolved... This page was last updated23 July 2003 - Under construction
    What is Biathlon:
Biathlon is a Winter Olympic Sport which combines cross country skiing with precision target shooting. There is also a warm weather variant called Summer Biathlon which replaces skiing with running. In a typical Winter race, a Biathlete is required to ski with his or her rifle over a set distance to a shooting range, where five shots at five knockdown targets 50 m down range are taken from prone position. Depending on the format, either a time penalty or penalty laps are assessed for missed shots. The racer then skiis another loop, and comes back to the shooting range for another set of shots - this time from a standing stance. Again penalties are assessed for missed shots. The biathlete then skiis a final loop to complete the race. A more complete description of the various race formats may be found here Though a seemingly unlikely combination of events - one is an aerobic activity which requires strength, speed, and endurance; the other is a passive activity which requires concentration and a steady hand (difficult after you've been skiing all out!), the biathlon concept evolved from two activities which have a long history - hunting and winter warfare.
    1994 Olympic Postcard
    Hunting Origins
Rock paintings depicting hunters with bow and arrow moving on sliding timber have been found near Roedoey, Norway which date back to the Neolithic age (about 3000 BC). However, the first written descriptions of hunting on skiis come from Roman, Greek, and Chinese historical writings. These include such well known authors as the Roman poet Virgil, who described hunting on skiis in 400 BC.

The Biathlon program at Blackhawk has grown since starting in 2003-2004 and incorporates a 10 meter air rifle range. The range is adjacent to the Nordic Base Trail that benefits from manmade snow starting in late November to early December. There is also an effort underway to establish a practice area that will incorporate a 50 meter target for experienced biathletes. The biathlon program is geared to youth and adults who are interested in participating in and learning about biathlon. Youth who want to participate in biathlon will need to sign up for the Middle School or High School Cross Country Programs. Adults who want to try the sport should contact Mark Torresani by sending an email to the address below. Participants should have some previous experience and skills at cross country skiing and it is recommended they have their own ski equipment. Biathlon shooting instruction will be provided.

    Biathlon
The biathlon combines free cross country skiing with target shooting using a small calibre rifle. The athletes ski loops of the course, stopping each time to fire a prerequisite number of shots at the target. Participants incur either a time or distance penalty for missing a target depending on the event. The sport demands great physical stamina and strength, but also a capacity for concentration and considerable technical abilities. Originally a hunting technique that combined skiing with shooting, biathlon (from the Greek word meaning 'two tests') was also incorporated into military strategy in northern Europe.
Olympic History The men's 20km individual event was first introduced onto the Olympic program in 1960 at Squaw Valley, USA. A men's relay was added at Grenoble 1968, and a 10km sprint event at Lake Placid 1980. Women’s biathlon did not make its debut until 1992 with the 7.5km, 15km and relay events. At Lillehammer 1994 the women's 7.5km relay increased from three legs to four. At Salt Lake, the men's 12.5km and women's 10km pursuit events were added for the first time.
    Australia in this Sport
Australia has been represented by four biathletes at the Olympic Games with Kerryn Rim (Pethybridge) the standout. Rim is the only Australian biathlete to compete at three Games in Albertville 1992, Lillehammer 1994 and Nagano 1998. Her best finishes were 21st in the 7.5km sprint and 8th in the 15km individual event in 1994.
