What is Biathlon?
Background
Biathlon is the Olympic winter sport combining cross-country skiing rifle marksmanship. The word "biathlon" is of Greek origin and means "two tests", referring to the disciplines of cross country skiing and rifle marksmanship. The contrast in these two discplines is what creates the unique challenge of biathlon - the all out physical exersion required in cross country ski racing, and the fine control and stability needed for accurate shooting.
History
Competition
In a biathlon competition there are classes for novice, youth, junior, senior, and master participants. Each competitor skis distances ranging from 7.5km - 20km, while carring a .22 caliber rifle on their back. The competitor stops at the shooting range either two or four times, depending on the particular event. At the range, shooting is alternated between the prone and standing position. Competitors fire five shots at metal know-down targets 50 meters away. In the prone position the targets are 45mm in diameter, or about the size of a silver dollar. The targets for the standing position are a slighly larger 115mm, or about the size of a DVD. Depending on the event, eached missed shot results in either a time penalty being added to their finish time, or a penalty loop to be skied. The winner is the competitor with the lowest elapsed time after all extra loops and time penaltys have been added.

A seemingly unlikely combination of events one is an aerobic activity (skiing or running) which requires strength, speed and endurance; the other is a passive activity (shooting) which requires concentration and a steady hand (difficult after youve been skiing, running or walking all out!).
After a great and well attended '09, we are ready to begin Pemigewasset Valley Fish and Game Clubs fourth season of Biathlon with five events this summer (2010). We recently acquired ten of the Devin BT-500 "real" official biathlon match targets, each with a bank of five bulls-eyes and when the target is hit a white paddle comes up and covers the black! They reset with the pull of a nylon rope and can change from the prone ("small") to the offhand ("big"), also with a pull of the rope. Scoring and shooter satisfaction is much enhanced with these targets! The ten steel Devin-100 Practice Targets purchased with a generous grant from the NRA Foundation will still be used for practice sessions.
The Summer biathlon season at Pemigewassett Valley Fish and Game Club will get started on Saturday, June 5. There will be teams registered as Match Teams and as Sport Teams. The Sport Team is designed for novices/beginners/youth and they will shoot at the larger targets prone as well as offhand and they will run/walk shorter distances.

About the Sport
Biathlon — which combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting — did not start as a sport, but as a way for northern European hunters, as early as 2000 BC, to put food on the table. Beginning in the mid-16th century, however, Scandinavian countries began using troops on skis to defend against their enemies. The word “biathlon” comes from the Greek word for “two tests.” Today, biathlon consists of 10 separate events that involve both cross-country skiing and target shooting. The objective in biathlon is to complete the course in the least amount of time, hitting as many targets as possible to avoid time penalties. The first world championships in biathlon were held in 1958 at Saalfelden, Austria. Biathlon became an Olympic sport (for men only) at the Squaw Valley 1960 Olympic Winter Games . Women’s biathlon joined the Olympic Games 30 years later, in 1992, at the Albertville Games , in France.

History
The sport has its origins in an exercise for Norwegian soldiers . The first known competition took place in when border patrol companies competed against each other. Gradually the sport became more common throughout Scandinavia as an alternative training for the military . Called military patrol , the combination of skiing and shooting was demonstrated at the Olympic Winter Games in and , but did not gain Olympic recognition then, as the small number of competing countries disagreed on the rules (see also Governing body, below).

Biathlon
A biathlon is a form of duathlon, a generic term that refers to a sporting event that is made up of two different athletic disciplines. However, the term biathlon refers to the specific wintertime combination of skiing and rifle shooting. A summertime biathlon also exists, which comprises cross-country running and rifle shooting. This military training grew to include competitions. The first-known example was in 1767, and involved border guards from Norway and Sweden. As time went on, these competitions expanded to include rifle and ski clubs throughout Norway and other Scandinavian countries, and Switzerland. Aside from the pleasure of competition, the sport kept club members, many of whom could be called up for active military service, fit and trained. In the early appearance of the Olympic biathlon, only a few Scandinavian countries participated in the sport. As well, there were few agreed-upon rules. The biathlon languished and was dropped from the Olympics after the 1948 competition. In its original form, the biathlon consisted of a skiing over a 12.2-mi (20 km) course with four target-shooting stops between the fifth and eighteenth kilometers. At the first and third stops, each competitor shot while lying down. Then, the target was 9.8 in (25 cm) in diameter with an inner 4.9 in (12.5 cm) diameter ring. At the second and fourth stops, shots were taken while the competitor was standing. Then, because aiming the rifle was more difficult, the target was larger; a 17.7-in (45 cm) outer ring with an inner ring of 13.7 in (35 cm) in diameter.
