Biblical History: The Faulty Criticism of Biblical Historicity

This article first appeared in the Christian Research Journal , volume 27, number 2 (2004). For further information or to subscribe to the Christian Research Journal go to: http://www.equip.org The new criticism of the scriptural record is corrosive and categorical from beginning to end. It claims, for example, that there is no evidence that any such person as Abraham ever lived or even could is historical, he was not a mighty potentate whose power was felt from the Nile to the Euphrates but rather a freebooter who carved out what was at most a small duchy in the southern highlands around Jerusalem and Hebron. Indeed, the chief disagreement among scholars nowadays is between those who hold that David was a petty hilltop chieftain whose writ extended no more than a few miles in any direction all. absence False Claims Abraham a Myth? Early critics No Migration from Mesopotamia? The Patriarchs? No Israelite Sojourn in Egypt or Exodus Therefrom?

Biblical History
People who read the Bible are sure to read the books as stories and to experience the Bible as a history book. A history book that tells people what God did with people and for people in the past and what He intends to do in the future. All Bible books and all Bible stories pay must attention to the aspect of chronology: placing events and developments in their proper order in time and letting people know in what year or even on what date they took place.
Biblical History. Introduction.
The Bible gives us trustworthy information about the history of mankind. This fact guarantees us that the lessons about good and evil we can learn from it are correct.
A concise Biblical History
God has provided all Bible books and Bible stories with clear indications of time which make it easy to determine exactly when certain events and developments took place.
The life of John the Baptist and of Jesus Christ
An angel told the shepherds that very nearby something great had happened: a Savior for the Jewish people had been born, the long expected Messiah, their future Lord and King.
The Building of the Christian Church
The sum and substance of insights, views and rules of conduct which together form the Christian faith are largely based on the 14 letters which Paul wrote to his congregations.

Hebron
An ancient royal city of Chanaan , famous in biblical history , especially at the time of the patriarchs and under David . During the Middle Ages it was an episcopal see Prima , with as metropolitan . Hence the division of this article into two parts: (I) Biblical Epoch, (II) Christian Epoch.
Biblical epoch
Hebron is one of the earliest towns mentioned in history . According to the Bible Numbers 13:23 ) it was founded seven years before Zoan or Tanis , the most ancient town in Lower Egypt , which means that it existed from the first half of the third millennium B.C. Josephus (Bel. Jud., IV, ix, 7) says that in his time the town was already 2300 years old. It was originally called Kiriat Arba , or Kiriat- ha-Arba (D. V. Cariath-Arbe Genesis 23:2 Joshua 14:15 Judges 1:10 Nehemiah 11:25 ) from the name of Arba , "the greatest among the Enacims" ( Joshua 14:15 ). The Vulgate , taking the common name ha-adam in this last expression, i.e. the man, for the proper name Adam, translates as follows: "Adam the greatest among the Enacim was laid there"; whence it should not be inferred, as was the case with some ancient authors, that

http://www.bibletopics.com/biblestudy/108.htm
A Biblical History of Jerusalem References to the city of Jerusalem appear throughout the entire Hebrew and Messianic Scriptures. Through the ages it has been called by many names: Salem, Mount Moriah, Adonai Urah, Jebus, Jerusalem, Zion, the City of David, and Ariel (Lion of God). God has declared that this is the place He will establish His Name and will dwell there forever (1 Kings 9:3). This is a city rich in history, tradition and culture. It is also one of the main focal points of the United Nations and the world. This article will show the history of Jerusalem as it is presented in the Scriptures: without interpretation or speculation. The aspect of prophecy will not be addressed as this is not a part of the literal history of Jerusalem. To understand the periods of time, all dates are taken from known historical events, except in the time of Abraham. The Beginning The Scriptural history of Jerusalem begins when Abraham meets "Melek Tzedek", king of Salem - around 2110 BC/BCE (Genesis 14:17-20). This is following Abraham's defeat of Chedorlaomer after he had captured Abraham's nephew, Lot. A peculiar aspect of this meeting is that Abraham had bread and wine with "Melek Tzedek" and then gave him a tenth of all he had. The Scriptures reveal that "Melek Tzedek" is a priest of the God Most High.

Who knows how many children have been taught that Eve ate an apple when God told her not to. What an embarrassment to the religious teachers of today. How many sermons have been preached on the Sin in the Garden by "parsons" who do not have the slightest idea of what that sin was?
Open your Bible, PRAY that the Holy Spirit will show you the truth, and I will tell you what I have received thru study. I sincerely hope that you will NOT take my word for it without checking it out for yourself. The following is not contradicted any where in the whole of God's word. On the contrary, much of the hard to understand passages of the Words and parables of Jesus as well as the writings of Paul, Peter and James are made plain.
In the first chapter, we learned that there was an earth age before this present one, and that God destroyed his original creation. This in itself is an astounding statement, yet God's Word declares it for those with "eyes to see". Also in Gen 1, we saw the CREATION of the second (this present) Earth and Heaven Age, through the sixth day man (the races of even today), and after the seventh day the FORMING of Adam (the eighth-day man), and his wife, Eve. We found that this Adam was made a special servant of God, for it was through his seed that Christ Himself was to come. This man was special. We found that even the ORDER of creation was different in Gen chapters 1 and 2. God gave Adam and Eve totally different instructions than the sixth day man, and prepared a special place for them to live, separate from the rest of creation.

Unification News for February 1999 Biblical History Paul Carlson
February, 1999
Many prominent historians consider the twin mainstreams of western thought and culture to be Hellenism and Hebraism. These are, respectively, the major humanist and God-centered schools of thought. The Divine Principle agrees, and elaborates. In the December 1998 Unification News we discussed the Hellenic side of history. This month we’ll look at some Hebraic, or Biblical, issues. The subject embraces enough material to fill an entire library, so we’ll focus mainly on the "hard reality" of the Bible, as opposed to the theologies derived from it. History Ultimately, Marx and Lenin sought to liquidate not only Hebraic beliefs, but the believers themselves. Communism has now fallen, in almost every country, but the intellectual debate continues. Heinrich Himmler’s occult center, Wewelsburg Castle, was to be the "Vatican" of a newly dominant Aryan religion. A faith proudly spartan, forest loving, piously vegetarian—and viciously ruthless towards its "inferior" human opponents. The Nazi edifice has also fallen, but like its Marxist cousin, its ideas continue to play a role in the modern "culture war."

A Class-Book of Biblical History and Geography , by Professor H. S. Osborn, LL. D., published by the American Tract Society, 1890. From the preface: "This work is a Class-Book of the Old and the New Testaments treated as consecutive history. It includes the Jewish history of the centuries between the close of the Old Testament and the beginning of the New... It presents those important elements of Biblical history which distinguish it from all other histories and which illustrate the plan and the purpose of the Bible as one Book... In the treatment of this history we have allowed no space for mere opinions or speculations. The work is purely historical, and its text is illustrated only by that which is pertinent and well authenticated, in either geographic or archeological discovery." Chapters and sections: 1-1. CORINTH
Corinth:  A Brief History The Isthmus of Corinth connects mainland Greece in the north to the Peloponnese Peninsula in the south.  Situated on a plateau overlooking the Isthmus of Corinth, the city of Corinth was one of the most strategically located centers of the ancient world.  The unique topography made for a place that was easily defended from would-be intruders. th century.  Instead, the ruler Periander (during Greek times) built an alternative:  the “Diolkos”—a limestone path on which a wheeled vehicle could be pulled. The Greeks lifted ships onto the vehicle and pulled them across the path. Ships that were too big to take advantage of the Diolkos instead had the cargo unloaded and transported across the land.  The cargo was then reloaded on another ship waiting on the other side. Corinth Canal During this new Roman period the city became a place of great wealth and indulgence.   The saying, “to live as a Corinthian” came into existence at this time and what it meant was to live in luxury and immorality.  With port cities, often there is the potential for bad behavior and Corinth; having two ports seemed to embrace this potential with everything she had!  (Paul mentions the sins of the people of Corinth in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11) Corinth offered all vices to all her visitors as well as her locals.  The temple of Aphrodite was located on a high point called the Acrocorinth and it was here that the goddess of love was worshiped.  There were more than a thousand temple priestesses that offered themselves to would-be worshipers of Aphrodite.  There is some controversy as to whether they should be called prostitutes or not, since their function was technically to facilitate worship of this Greek goddess (Venus to the Romans).  However, most who look back on what was going on can call it prostitution, even if the people at the time didn’t think of it as a vice, but as an act of worship.  An interesting factoid is that Aphrodite was also thought to be the protector of sailors, so worship of this goddess in the method she prescribed meant a safe passage on the seas.   An important thought for a city that was full of sailors from its two ports.
