The uniquely wide-ranging geology of the Geopark is directly responsible for its varied landscape character and the range of habitats and species found within it. Many areas within the Geopark are designated as biological Sites of Special Scientific Interest, Special Wildlife Sites, National Nature Reserves or Local Nature Reserves. The Silurian Limestones of the Abberley Hills support a variety of flora including the Rock Rose, Carline Thistles, Wild Thyme and Dyers Greenweed. At least eight species of orchid, including the common spotted, bee, butterfly and pyramidal orchids thrive on the alkaline soils. The Malvern Hills are home to the Skylark, Stonechat and Meadow Pipit, which are at home in the scrubby, open habitat (Malvern means bare hill). The top of the hills which is acidic grassland supports swathes of heathers and grasses. The High Brown Fritillary frequents the hills and the acidic grasslands of the adjacent Castlemorton Common. The Common is one of a few localities where there are examples of pollarded Black Poplar. The Wyre Forest is one of the most important areas of semi- ancient woodland in the country and is home to an almost unrivalled flora and fauna. The underlying bedrock of Upper Carboniferous shales and sandstones mean the soils here are heavily acidic. The Narrow Leaved Helleborines pictured here are in rapid decline. They are a remnant of an industrial past when charcoal burning was carried out in the forest which created patches of less acidic soil suitable for this plant. An area of the forest has recently been limed to attempt to re-establish them in numbers.

We plan to publish a conference volume in "Biodiversity and Ecology" (ISSN 1613-9801), an international, peer-reviewed journal, published at the Botanical Institute of the University of Hamburg. It will be both an attractive print publication (DIN A4 format, full colour, no page charges, widely distributed in central European libraries, sold as a monograph for a low price) and be permanently and freely available as e-publication on the internet. This special volume (working title: "Vegetation Databases for the 21st Century" ) will be guest-edited by Jürgen Dengler, Jörg Ewald, Manfred Finckh, Florian Jansen, and Jens Oldeland. We plan to subdivide the volume into two parts: (1) Ordinary papers based on talks and posters on the conference (2) Reports on existing vegetation databases. With the second part of the special volume, we aim at providing a comprehensive overview of vegetation databases worldwide (as far as they are basically available to the public). The purpose of this attempt is fivefo
    • Increasing the awareness about existing vegetation databases and bringing them together with potential users.

Crown-of-thorns starfish Crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS) are marine invertebrates that feed on coral and occur naturally on reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific region. When conditions are right for COTS to multiply, they can reach plague proportions and devastate the hard coral population on affected reefs. In the past 40 years, three major COTS outbreaks have had a major impact on many reefs of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). COTS outbreaks are responsible for a greater decline in coral cover than any other threat to the GBR. AIMS has implemented the most comprehensive COTS monitoring program in the world across the GBR. This long-term program, combined with genetic studies, has shown that COTS outbreaks begin in the north and migrate southward on ocean currents over about a 15 year period. These surveys also show that healthy reefs generally recover between outbreaks, taking 10-20 years to do so. Reefs affected by additional stresses, such as coral bleaching, cyclones or poor water quality, may take a lot longer. Laboratory research at AIMS has shown that survival of COTS larvae increases dramatically as phytoplankton, their food source, becomes more abundant. Although land runoff rich in fertilisers and other pollutants can cause peaks in phytoplankton, scientists are still unsure whether there is a link between human activity and COTS outbreaks, given that the biggest increases in phytoplankton production follow natural events such as cyclones and high rainfall and outbreaks propagate effectively on mid-shelf and outer reefs in the central GBR that are hardly ever affected by runoff.

Scientific information is essential for policy makers and their constituents, informing them on environmental and developmental issues, as well as serving as a basis for broader global assessments. Aiming these, UNESCO implements different programme activities and two of them are World Network of Biosphere Reserves ( WNBR ) and Man and the Biosphere Programme ( MAB The World Network of Biosphere Reserves ( WNBR ) provides an effective scientific support structure, as it features worldwide coverage of representative ecosystems and agreed objectives for carrying out research and monitoring. The programme fostering policies, technical capacity-building, research, networking, education and international cooperation in the fields of water, ecological and earth sciences for enhancing societal responses. It is support sustainable development promoted via establishment of interdisciplinary learning laboratories using sites of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves for research on biodiversity and sustainability. The Man and the Biosphere Programme ( MAB ), proposes an interdisciplinary research agenda and capacity building aiming to improve the relationship of people with their environment globally.

BRCC has an in house ecologist who can undertake a wide range of wildlife surveys from amphibians to plants, bats and other mammals and invertebrates; we can undertake vegetation surveys and write management plans, create interpretation panels and write leaflets. Our experience has been built over 10 years of undertaking ecological work throughout Bedfordshire and the surrounding counties. Examples of work we have done in the past include Phase 1 studies, protected species scoping surveys, bat surveys of bridges, management plans for local community sites, large parks and nature reserves, advising on wildflower meadow creation and pond creation. Recent examples of our work include surveying Biggleswade Allotments Meadow (which we advised on the creation of in 2003) to establish its fitness for recognition as a County Wildlife Site. The site easily fits the criteria and is awaiting approval from the County Wildlife Site Panel later in the year. Another recent example is the creation of wildlife spotters leaflets for Castle Close Sharnbrook giving some examples of plants and mini-beasts found there and tips on how to identify them. So if you have a bit of land and wonder what the wildlife interest might be, or need a protected species survey done prior to doing some work or if you just want a little bit of advice as to how to best manage your pond or encourage bats then why not get in touch and see if we can help?
