Welcome
Welcome to the Biological Resources Discipline (BRD)
The BRD mission is to work with others to provide the scientific understanding and technologies needed to support the sound management and conservation of our Nation's biological resources. A fundamental part of our mission is embodied in our deep commitment to make data and information on the Nation's biological resources more accessible to more people. We're delighted that you've decided to take a closer look at all we offer.
BRD History
Chronology 1885 - Ornithological Office established in the Entomology Division, U.S. Department of Agriculture.
1886 - Mission extended to mammals. Division of Ornithology and Mammalogy created.
1896 - Name changed to the Division of Biological Survey.
1905 - Division elevated to the Bureau of Biological Survey (BBS).
1939 - BBS becomes part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the Department of the Interior.
1993 - Formation of the National Biological Service (NBS).
1996 - NBS becomes part of USGS as the BRD In October 1996, the Biological Resources Discipline or BRD was established within the U.S. Geological Survey. BRD brought an important living resources dimension to the USGS earth sciences orientation, thus making it possible for the bureau to bring physical plus biological science to natural resource management problems.

Welcome to Ecosystems
The USGS is now aligned around the areas of research identified in the USGS Science Strategy . Ecosystems includes the following programs: Invasive Species Program Cooperative Research Units Fisheries: Aquatic and Endangered Resources Program Terrestrial, Freshwater, and Marine Ecosystems Program ... Wildlife: Terrestrial and Endangered Resources Program . USGS Ecosystems programs also highlight cross-discipline research in Microbiology
Invasive Species Program
The USGS Invasive Species Program provides methodologies and information to address threats to ecological systems and native species due to the introduction and spread of invasive species.
Cooperative Research Units
The Cooperative Research Unit program was established in 1935 to enhance graduate education in fisheries and wildlife sciences and to facilitate research between natural resource agencies and universities on topics of mutual concern. Today, there are 40 Cooperative Research Units in 38 states. Each unit is a partnership among the U.S. Geological Survey, a State natural resource agency, a host university, and the Wildlife Management Institute.
Fisheries: Aquatic and Endangered Resources Program
The Fisheries: Aquatic and Endangered Resources Program (FAER) focuses on the study of aquatic organisms and aquatic habitats from the molecular genetics level to species and population interactions with the environment. Aquatic pathogens, invertebrates, mussels, fishes, and the unique role of aquatic communities in ecosystems are investigated to provide scientific information to natural resource managers and decision makers.

Ananet
The taxonomy of anamorphic fungi is the topic of this discussion forum/electronic newsletter maintained by Keith Seifert of Agriculture Canada.
Anateleo
Anateleo is a database of anamorph-teleomorph connections. Anamorphs are the asexual reproductive states of ascomycetes and basidiomycetes; a special article of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature allows us to give them their own names. This database includes only ascomycetes, so far, and is searchable either by anamorph or holomorph (=teleomorph) names. Opportunity is provided for new submissions (with documentation) and corrections. Now hosted by CBS.
Armillaria
Tom Volk has made available on the web his key to Armillaria species, accompanied by lots of information on the history and taxonomy of the genus.
