The Florida Panhandle is one of the nation's six "biological hot spots," which means it has many rare species, and many of these rare species are found only in small areas. (The other five areas are Hawaii, the southern Appalachians, the San Francisco Bay area, the Death Valley region, and southern California.) Here's our tally:
Biodiversity hotspots in the United States (from Precious Heritage
Species found nowhere else in the world outside the ARROW region's seven counties ("endemic" species):
    • 4 animals
    • 7 plants Additional rare species:
      • 34 animals
      • 16 plants
(Species are listed below The Apalachicola River drainage basin supports more reptile and amphibian species than anyplace else in the United States and Canada, with more than 40 amphibian and 80 reptilian species, according to the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve ( ANERR ). See also Means (1977). Why do we have so many? Is it because of our warm climate? Is it because the region has so many different types of natural communities? Is it because of the abundance and variety of fresh, brackish, and salt waters from clear spring runs to silty river flows, from tiny temporary ponds to Florida's biggest river, along with two of the continent's most fertile bays where fresh and salt waters mix?

    Monarch Butterfly Biology
    Life Cycle
The monarch butterfly, like other insects, has several life forms and stages prior to reaching adulthood. The monarch has four distinct life stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult. Photos: Egg by William Zittrich ; Larva by USDA; Pupa by William Zittrich ; Adult by Tanya Harvey.
    The Migrating Generation
Monarchs congregating on a tree at El Rosario Sanctuary, Michoacan, Mexico. Photo by Sue Sill, LCHPR, Inc. During the summer breeding season, monarchs live from 2-5 weeks during which they mate and lay the eggs that become the next generation. The last generation of the year does not become reproductive and is said to be in “reproductive diapause”. These butterflies are the ones that migrate to Mexico where they overwinter. These butterflies become reproductive in February and March as they move north, laying eggs on milkweeds as they progress northward into the United States. Some of these butterflies can live as long as 9 months! The migratory generation has an enormous task ahead of them. Weighing less than a gram, these unique butterflies will fly between 2,000 to 3,000 miles to an overwintering location in Mexico.

dqmcodebase = "http://dentalschool.umdnj.edu/new-scripts/script/" //script folder location Departments Oral Biology The Oral Biology Department has both teaching and research responsibilities in the dental and medical schools. Teaching includes dental school and post-graduate areas. Members of the department conduct a year-long course for dental students that consists of small group learning modules that are case-based and interactive. The teaching modules include areas in: growth and development, wound healing and tissue repair, caries biology, periodontal disease etiology and oral facial pain. The course encourages active participation where students review scientific articles that form the basis for paradigm shifts in clinical diagnosis and treatment. Student reviews include oral presentations and sessions that include problem-solving. Oral Biology. This full year course includes a comprehensive treatment of oral embryology, growth and development, oral biochemistry, oral genetics and oral physiology. It consists of five modules. Each module presents a comprehensive coverage of the biological principles that apply to the clinical practice of dentistry. Module I Module II - Caries - includes biological aspects that relate to restorative and pediatric dentistry. Detailed information about plaque ecology, specific bacteria that infect enamel and dentin and factors that influence that process will be discussed on a clinical and molecular level. Transmission, colonization of tissues, invasion of the pathogens as well as responses to these organisms will be discussed.

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is one of six basic science departments at MD Anderson dedicated to advancing our knowledge of the processes that regulate cell growth, survival and differentiation at the molecular level. The department currently occupies about 30,000 square feet of modern new laboratory space in the George and Cynthia Mitchell Basic Sciences Research Building, which opened its doors in April 2005. Department faculty members have ample laboratory and office space and unlimited opportunities for their research teams to advance their projects. Grants to department faculty through both government and private agencies exceed $4.5 million in annual direct costs. For more information, please read this
