Thorax 07-06-2006 at 02:49:54 PM Show message Bios is an acronym for basic input/output system, and it is a program that runs before anything else when you boot up. It's stored on a CMOS chip on the motherboard. Reply to Thorax Pain 07-06-2006 at 02:53:13 PM Show message Right. Cmos and Bios are sort of used interchangably by most people, and people still know what you're talking about, but the bios is the software and the cmos is what it's stored on.

Phoenix AwardBIOS CMOS ( non-volatile memory ) Setup utility on a standard PC The BIOS software is built into the PC, and is the first code run by a PC when powered on ('boot firmware'). The primary function of the BIOS is to load and start an operating system . When the PC starts up, the first job for the BIOS is to initialize and identify system devices such as the video display card , keyboard and mouse, hard disk , CD/DVD drive and other hardware. The BIOS then locates software held on a peripheral device (designated as a 'boot device'), such as a hard disk or a CD, and loads and executes that software, giving it control of the PC. This process is known as booting , or booting up, which is short for bootstrapping
BIOS software is stored on a non-volatile ROM chip built into the system on the mother board . The BIOS software is specifically designed to work with the particular type of system in question, including having a knowledge of the workings of various devices that make up the complementary chipset of the system. In modern computer systems, the

Configuring ISA Boards in EISA Machines
When installing ISA boards in an EISA machine it is recommended to use the system's EISA Configuration Utility. Hardware conflicts can easily be detected and resolved using this method. If ISA boards only are being installed, and they are not being configured, proceed to step 5. The Driver diskette contains configuration files required by EISA machines to configure EISA and ISA boards. Configure your EISA machine to recognise the installed board(s) using the respective system configuration utility. Consult your computer system installation manual for instructions on using the system configuration utility. Follow these steps to reconfigure your EISA machine: Step 1.

6:49 AM - January 4, 2006 by Andreas Winterer Table of contents The Basic Input Output System - aka BIOS -resides in a small Flash EEPROM memory module on the motherboard. It's a form of read-only memory, but may be rewritten or programmed when the right tools and techniques are applied. During PC startup, the processor on the motherboard always executes the program stored in the BIOS as its first major maneuver. When a PC dawdles through the boot process, the system runs slowly, Windows crashes, or the hardware fails, a badly configured BIOS may be at fault. In this article, we show you how to manipulate the switch center of your PC, to make your system run faster and work better.

Introduction
Sometimes, especially when upgrading your PC, you may need to perform a BIOS upgrade in order to update your system to accept a new hardware part or to fix a bug. For the average Joe, this procedure is quite obscure. In this tutorial we will give step-by-step procedures on how to upgrade your system BIOS. The way to update the motherboard ROM depends on the type of memory chip used in your PC. There are two types of ROM chips used in PCs, Mask-ROM (only on very old motherboards and that cannot be updated by software) and Flash-ROM (on almost all motherboards, which is able to be updated by software). In this tutorial we will cover Flash-ROM.

That's the only way to take out the password ... and that also resets your system back to manufacturer's default settings. For boards not having a CMOS or password reset jumper (likely only in really old 286 and 386 computers), you can remove the battery by popping it out with your fingernail, wait a few seconds then replace the battery. What is BIOS?
What is BIOS?
Q: What is BIOS?
A: BIOS stands for Basic Input Output System.
Q: Well, I see that the BIOS is necessary for the computer, but what can I do with it?
A: You can change hardware configurations that are stored in the CMOS, or Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor.
To perform its tasks, the BIOS need to know various parameters (hardware configuration). These are permanently saved in a little piece (64 bytes) of CMOS RAM (short: CMOS). The CMOS power is supplied by a little battery, so its contents will not be lost after the PC is turned off. Therefore, there is a battery and a small RAM memory on board, which never (should...) lose its information. The memory was in earlier times a part of the clock chip, now it's part of such a highly Integrated Circuit (IC). CMOS is the name of a technology which needs very low power so the computer's battery is not too much in use.
Your PC's performance can be highly affected by the CMOS settings. The reason for this is that the CMOS setup allows you to specify how fast your computer reads from memory, whether or not your cache is enabled or disabled, whether or not your CPU's cache is enabled or disabled, how fast your PCI bus communicates with its adaptor cards, plus a lot more. For more information on optimizing these performance settings/

Video files and video formats The BIOS itself is software running in memory that consists of all the various drivers that interface the hardware to the operating system. The BIOS is unique compared to normal software in that it doesn't all load from disk; some of it is preloaded into memory chips (read-only memory, or ROM) installed in the system or on adapter cards. The BIOS in a PC comes from three possible sources:
  • Motherboard ROM
  • Adapter card ROM (such as that found on a video card)
  • Loaded into RAM from disk (device drivers)
The motherboard ROM BIOS is most often associated with hardware rather than software. This is because the BIOS on the motherboard is contained in a ROM chip on the board, which contains the initial software drivers needed to get the system running. Years ago, when only DOS was running on basic PCs, this was enough, so no other drivers were neededthe motherboard BIOS had everything that was necessary. The motherboard BIOS usually includes drivers for all the basic system components, including the keyboard, floppy drive, hard drive, serial and parallel ports, and more. As systems became more complex, new hardware was added for which no motherboard BIOS drivers existed. These included devices such as newer video adapters, CD-ROM drives, SCSI hard disks, USB ports, and so on.
