Animal Research
  • Syngenta is obliged to conduct animal research to comply with legal and regulatory requirements Syngenta uses alternative methods of testing to minimize the use of animals. Syngenta only contracts with companies that meet the high standards of animal welfare and data quality which we and registration authorities require.
Syngenta Position
Syngenta considers the responsible use of animals in research and development to be ethically appropriate where alternatives are not available or where such use is mandated by legal or regulatory requirements. Syngenta adopts a humane and compassionate approach to the care and use of animals and aims to operate to the highest professional standards, which requires continual review of procedures. Syngenta has been at the forefront of developing techniques that replace, reduce or refine the use of animals in research. The company invests in developing alternative methods of testing, including cell cultures, in vitro techniques, computer modelling, bioinformatics and high-throughput screening. Syngenta is committed to the development of agricultural, chemical and biotechnology products with the aim of improving the quality of food and health for humans and animals. To ensure the safety of these products for consumers, those working with the products and the environment, Syngenta has to conduct animal research to comply with legal or regulatory requirements.

Agricultural Biotechnology Support Project II
Supporting agricultural development through biotechnology
Welcome
The developing world can benefit from advances in biotechnology, but much needs to be done to make bio-engineered products available in forms that farmers can use. Agricultural Biotechnology Support Project II (ABSPII) believes that farmers and consumers worldwide should have the opportunity to make informed choices about using bio-engineered products. Our consortium will support the development of expertise in our target countries in the areas of research, policy development, licensing, and outreach, to help reduce poverty and hunger through agricultural biotechnology Secure Access 2010© Cornell University.

Good Idea; Bad Solution - Proposals for the Re-Nationalisation of GM Crop Cultivation
July 13, 2010 Commenting on today's announcement from the European Commission to re-nationalise the authorisation of the cultivation of GM crops, Dr Julian Little, Chair of the Agricultural Biotechnology Council (abc) said:"abc believes that today’s decision will create legal uncertainty for farmers and set the clock back in the development of solutions to the challenges facing European agriculture... Over the next 25 years, the world will have to double its production of food to meet the requirements of a growing population. In order to meet this challenge whilst facing up to the demands of climate change, farmers will need access to a range of tools to maximise the output of our existing land whilst ensuring that the natural environment is protected, conserved and enhanced.
Agricultural biotechnology, which fuses together plant science and genetic technologies to produce genetically modified (GM) crops, will be an important way of ensuring that natural resources are used more efficiently. This is why abc believes you need to put science at the heart of agriculture and that farmers in the UK should have the choice to access this technology.
