Biotechnology for Livestock Production
Biotechnology offers new benefits to small-scale livestock producers in the region. One of the most important is improved, low-cost vaccines. Another use is the development of new products, including livestock feeds, or food and medicines made from animal products. A recent FFTC regional survey drew up an inventory of useful products and technologies.
Livestock Breeding
Classical livestock breeding has been very successful. However, it is a slow process. Several decades may be needed to breed a livestock population with improved genetic traits. Biotechnology makes it easier to produce animals with superior genetic traits, and to multiply these animals rapidly. An important advance is embryo transfer, in which embryos produced by superior breeding females are removed for gestation by other animals. These superior females may produce more eggs than normal, as the result of hormone injections (superovulation). Not only embryos, but also unfertilized eggs (oocytes) can be removed from superior dams. Artifical insemination is then used to produce multiple embryos which are transplanted into unrelated females for gestation. Other advances in the use of biotechnology in livestock production include the production of clones (genetically identical offspring); improved freezing techniques for semen, oocytes and embryos; and genetic evaluation of the sperm used for artificial insemination. In poultry production, it is now possible to fertilize chick embryos and culture them inside an artifical egg until they are ready to hatch. This allows genetic manipulation at an early stage, before egg formation.

Livestock Biotechnologies in Developing Countries Livestock contribute directly to livelihoods worldwide, providing not only food, but also non-food products, draught power and financial security. Livestock production already accounts for more than one third of the global agricultural GDP in developing countries, and this proportion is expected to increase. The rapidly increasing demand for livestock products, known as the "Livestock Revolution", has created opportunities for improving the welfare of at least some of the nearly one billion poor people who depend on livestock for their livelihoods. However, land degradation, environmental pollution, global warming, the erosion of animal genetic resources, water shortages and emerging diseases are all expected to present challenges to the growing global livestock sector. Conventional technologies and biotechnologies in livestock have contributed immensely to increasing productivity, particularly in developed countries, and can help to alleviate poverty and hunger, reduce the threats of diseases and ensure environmental sustainability in developing countries. A wide range of biotechnologies are available and have already been used in developing countries in each of the three main sectors of animal sciences, which can be categorized as animal reproduction, genetics and breeding; animal nutrition and production; and animal health. In animal reproduction, genetics and breeding

Biotechnology - Livestock and poultry
Foods derived from GM livestock and poultry are far from commercial use. Research efforts are underway at a large number of laboratories across the world to enhance the quality of live stock for human consumption. While it may take some time that the actual commercial application of these efforts really start and has a significant impact on human development, efforts are in the right direction and may lead to path breaking results sooner or later.
As a part of ongoing research several growth-enhancing novel genes have been introduced into pigs. The process has positively affected the quality of the meat, i.e. the meat is more lean and tender. This research was initiated over a decade ago, but owing to some morphological and physiological effects developed by the pigs, these have not been commercialized. It may still be a while when the commercial application of the technology starts for human consumption.
Many modifications to milk have been proposed that either add new proteins to milk or manipulate endogenous proteins. Recently, researchers from New Zealand developed GM cows that produce milk with increased levels of casein protein. Use of such protein-rich milk would increase the efficiency of cheese production. Other work aims to reduce the lactose content of milk, with the intent of making milk available to the population of milk-intolerant individuals. This is one area where research is at a fairly advanced stage and results are expected to be out very soon. In fact in some countries, GM cows milk has been given go ahead for testing, which is the first step for allowing the commercial application of the same.

What is Organic?
and
You Are What You Eat
All this begs the question: Is organic food really better for consumers? In terms of health benefits, the jury is still out. Some scientists say yes, while others disagree. On the other side of the fence, organic farmers use manure as a natural fertilizer to help nourish their crops. Unfortunately, manure can potentially be more harmful than pesticide residue. It can contain E. coli bacteria, which spreads animal-borne diseases to humans when consumed. It's still largely unknown what long-term exposure to pesticide chemicals can cause, but the National Academy of Sciences suggests that the ingestion of pesticide residue can cause cancer, headaches, birth defects, and anything and everything in between. The largest group of concern is children; this is because their bodies are still developing and they eat more food in proportion to their body size than adults do. The evidence on organic food products' increased nutritional value is inconclusive. The USDA does not claim certified organic products are more nutritious or any safer than products created via conventional farming methods. However, The Journal of Applied Nutrition published a study that found organic foods to contain higher amounts of elements like calcium, boron, magnesium, and zinc. Overall, more research must be conducted to determine if eating organic is actually healthier than eating non-organic foods.
